I had one of these new in 1972 in the UK - cost £700. Served us well as a family car for 3 years until I changed it for something bigger (Austin 1800). Performance was more than adequate for the time. A colleague of mine had an Austin 1300GT which he used to boast about for speed and acceleration and mock my Moskvich. We put them to the test after finishing a night shift. Roads deserted at 6am. From a standing start on a dual carriageway he was away quicker but once the Moscow got into its stride I easily overtook him and left him well behind. He could hardly believe it. He'd never seen under the bonnet so I showed him. They had a 1500cc DOHC aluminium engine with a Weber style twin choke carb. Believe me, there was a lot of poke. If anything it was over-powered for the rest of the car. Massive understeer and you had to be careful on winding roads, roundabouts and bends. Brakes were difficult to keep properly balanced and servo assistance was too great needing a light touch or it would just about stand on its nose under braking. The original Russian tyres were awful with lots of squeal and poor wet grip. They fortunately wore out quickly and the set of Michelins I replaced them with were vastly better. I still look back fondly on that car. It never let us down, took us all over the place and was always a good talking point.
This classic car design from the inside out looks very similar to my late memorable ‘67 NISSAN DATSUN BLUEBIRD 411 . I’m Filipino and It really broke my heart after my family had to convince me to sell my car due to severe financial problems we encountered. That car was like my best friend. Had a long serious argument with my mom before giving in to the selling of the car to contribute to our family expenses. I actually cried then right after the sale.
always thought it would be cool to have a soviet car (as a collectable) just to see peoples heads turn when you drive by. the cost of importing one to Canada (if you even can anymore with the trade restrictions) would be probably higher then a new car
+gencreeper, well, some people have their preferences. Not everyone likes Soviet cars & there are lots of people that do. It's all a matter of personal preferences.
The problem with importing these to North America (US or Canada) is shipping from Eastern Europe will be more than the car cost to buy. In both the US and Canada, most Soviet cars are past the import restrictions (25 years in US, 15 years in Canada). So they can be shipped exactly as-is without having to change anything. If you don’t use it as a daily driver, you can slap historic license plates on it and not deal with safety inspection or full road tax/insurance as well. I’d imagine for $3-4000 US, you could have one of these shipped to you and fully registered, insured, etc.
Great review. The engine bay and interior look in great condition, the bodywork has aged just nicely. Interesting too as it appears to be an IZH, evidenced by the lower door handles, unique frontal treatment and the IZH badge on the steering wheel. However I noticed the Moskvitch badge on the boot lid. I love both cars, I have a Diecast estate model imported from what was the old USSR.
+Iain Lindsay, you can still see pockets of them in rural parts of Russia & the former Soviet Union. Depending on what cities & what parts of these cities you go to, they're either nearly non existent or they're relatively common. I think that the IZh 412 is a very cool car. However, IZh's & Moskvich's aren't as common in Russia nor as popular as the Lada. They're a lot harder to find on the roads than Ladas from the same period.
MegaRetr Thx. And btw do u have facebook? I might even suggest u some other cars u can try review i mean by introduce some car brands and model that were not available in Russia.
5:09 you forgot to mention hole for crank-starting engine by hand. Also love the radio and at 8:43 with that song playing with the bad reception sounds like really in the eastern bloc in 1984.
I happen to think that this is a very cool car. The Moskvich 412, especially the IZh model is very cool looking. Although, they're not as numerous as the Lada in Russia & the rest of the former Soviet Union, you can still see plenty of pockets of these things in Russia & the rest of the former Soviet Union, especially in rural areas & even some spots in some of their suburban & urban areas, so they're not really dead & they're still relatively common, but they're just not that easy to spot like Lada cars are everywhere.
It's my favorite car, I'm gonna get one from Cuba when I'm gonna turn 19. Best car you can ask for. Multi-functional, great for offroad and camping, and it looks good. I can even be used as a submarine blin! And if some biker comes and tries to annoy you with his loud engine, its impossible to impress the Moskvich with a louder engine, so show how loud your engine is compared to anyone elses.
Ahh these lovely old Russian cars...they are shit, but reliable and they have a certain charm to them. my dad had a red Lada 2107 and it was awesome :D
I like your reviews, dear neighbour :D in the 80's you would get 3 Moschwich for the price of a Ford Escort, in Finland that is ... so it was a cheap car, can't demand too much of it then can you. the early 70's model was/is way better looking with the chrome grill a.s.o. It still was imported into the mid 80's here, but the sales were poor, Lada on the other hand did quite well a bit into the 90's. I would love to see a review of a Wartburg if there's any left in Russia .. the 2 stroke avenger from East Germany :)??
+FF Fivehundread, true. Moskvich wasn't as lucrative as Lada, anywhere @ the time, even @ home, so they shut down Moskvich in 2002, I believe. It's kinda a shame because I happen to like the Moskvich IZh 412 better than the Lada. However, you can still see pockets of Moskvich cars, IZh cars, Zapos (Zaporozhets cars) & even RAF 2203 Latvijas in rural areas & depending on the cities & the ares of cities you go to in the former Soviet Union. It's the same thing
18 seconds to get up to 60 blistering miles an hour. The time it takes waiting for an average American stoplight just to reach a dangerously slow highway speed. The ''84 U.S. model anything looks like a space ship next to this reliable toaster on stroller wheels.
That is one of the special features of this car. Not sure if it was mentioned in the video. You can basically take the radio out and use it outside that's why antenna is for. I can't remember now how it was powered - a cable or a battery. But was quite useful when camping or doing anything else outdoors
will never understand why they had even three cars too short spaceless in the back in the same time!.........this plus vaz plus samara.............tzplrrrrrrrrrr..........ohh.....and gaz-24 is not like fiat 130!.........
This car would never work here. My current car reaches 62mph in roughly 5 seconds, this takes 18! Even an average car takes say, 8-9 seconds to reach 62. Major roads here, aside from the highways, have limits of 40-60mph and traffic lights galore. You would be honked at,yelled at, cut off, etc. because it would take you so long to reach speed. You'd pretty much hit every red light along the way..

Timeless classic from the USSR, no nonsense robust affordable and reliable transportation, like all Soviet era vehicles, I love the Moskvich !! x
A tip: watch movies at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Kyree Zayd definitely, I've been watching on flixzone} for months myself :D
@Kyree Zayd yup, have been using flixzone} for since december myself :D

gencreeper you can buy Soviet cars here in Canada. They used to sell them here from the early 70s to the mid 90s (Ladas specifically)
Hamilton Dashcammer Never buy a Lada. Just... don't.

Probably not a good idea these days
this car is by no means brilliant, but considering the prive, it's an absolutely lovely car to have! i definitely want one for myself!
2:25. Wow... the light is the same as the Lada 2107
Im here from life of boris
That's a lil bit other model, but people say that this model (but from 70s) is the strongest moskvitch ever created. Legends from the eastern Europe'
I love Eastern Bloc vehicles. Have a Trabant in the US. They are so simple, agricultural and yet, charming.
will you do a tour of the Opel Vectra A pleaase?
a classic 80's

umm iz is a moskvich. iz just shows the factory that the car was made. there were two factorys that made moskvich. one is iz and another is azlk.
For early '70s when it came out it was actually a very popular car in all over Europe!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Can u make a review on the Moskvich 2140? I m doing some research on Soviet era vehicles. Thx
Ivan Ling Hey I`ll try
MegaRetr Thx. And btw do u have facebook? I might even suggest u some other cars u can try review i mean by introduce some car brands and model that were not available in Russia.

Very nice to see old Russian cars in this kind of high quality video! :)
thanks for reviewing the old soviet cars I live in Greece and many soviet cars were sold here.
Actually, the Moskvitch 412 first came into production in 1967, so it is rather a classic 60s car.
It look good for it's age.
Cool video!
Nice car

My father haved such car i love it. Later he buyed BMW e30
Very interesting, thanks for cool video again!
If i may suggest: U should make a video tour of your city, it could be very interesting also.
I LOVE MOSKVICH
It's probably the best russian car, with smooth ride, strong chassis and sweet-sounding engine
Москвичеводы здесь есть?

Cool IZH Moskwich, are those rare or easy to get?
Can you do a test drive with this car?
I'd love to see a source for "the average car takes 8-9 seconds to reach 62". Do you have one?
This and Lada of similar design were used as taxis in Jos, Nigeria in the 80s.
This is a version of Izhevsk(republic of Udmurtia), the other one is AZLK(Moscow)
Ahh these lovely old Russian cars...they are shit, but reliable and they have a certain charm to them. my dad had a red Lada 2107 and it was awesome :D
