when they say "hammered" coin are they referring to the way it's made? hammered versus pressed?

Yes, they were hammered out somehow - pre-milled coinage for the most part. Not sure of the exact methods though.

Yes ,they would soften up the metal and use a counter die and hammer it into a small plank
