The music and the voice both come together brilliantly on this track. So sad both are gone now . RIP Alan and Billy.
First song I thought to come to when I heard the news today.

For me, this and Breakfast were Alan and Billy's finest moments. Nobody did melancholy quite like The Associates.

The vocal genius, & the musical genius. Alan, & Billy were the perfect combination.

      … no shame in that.

It's one of the best, along with Tin Drum by Japan.

I'd have it as my all time favourite and 1982 the best year for music.

Billy Makenzie had the vocal range of an Angel. God rest in peace.

This is one of the best vocal tracks ever. Came out while the 1982 World Cup was being determined. Bjork claims this as her favorite desert island song. I agree.

For me this was the band's musical peak. Everything comes together superbly. Music that's dark, ominous, disturbing, that's what The Associates were best at.

I was 21, and accidentally heard Sulk at a friends house. Pretty much one of their best albums. Now nearly 40 years later i realize this song was one of the best ever….

My brother and I used to get stoned to this, it always worked for us. An epic track from a classic album, no less. Love you Billy, even to this day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bjork wanted to do a posthumous duet with Billy on this track. She made contact with the MacKenzie family and I believe was sent the master tapes but ultimately I think she realised that there is no improving on perfection, and that's exactly what this track is. Sulk is such a special record. Funnily enough, there are quite a few Bjork songs I could imagine Billy singing on.

Stunning is a word that tends to get overused a lot these days often with regard to the most banal things imaginable. This song and pretty much the entire "Sulk" album, is for me, the very definition of the word.

A song like the old Westberlin. When Berlin was Berlin.

Not sure if I liked this at first, but I now realise how clever and atmospheric it is.

The whole album is about manic depression, (known today as bipolar).

Perhaps Billy was born at the wrong time and his talent wouldn't have gone unacknowledged if The Associates were around in say the 70s or late 90s, But the record would never have sounded the same without the the early 80s New Wave/ Post Punk/ Goth influences. So I'm glad it came out when it did.

I read in an interveiw with alan rankin, He asked billy to explain one of his lyrics, and Alan said, two hours later, I will never ask that again!

    • @ajs41

The meaning is mostly to do with manic depression, or bipolar as it's known today.
