Terry Pratchett’s. The Sea And Little Fishes. (Full Audiobook) (Short Story)

  • A coalition of witches, led by self-appointed organiser Lettice Earwig, asks Granny Weatherwax not to participate in the annual Lancre Witch Trials, on account of her always winning. She agrees, becoming disconcertingly nice.
It is revealed in later stories, most specifically the Tiffany Aching series, that this is because Granny has made it clear that she does not approve of Lettice Earwig's methods, and admitting that a rival is correct "at the time of her own choosing" is the greatest and most calculated insult Granny can possibly deliver to another witch, essentially having agreed with Lettice Earwig's own unwitting 'admission' that she cannot beat Granny.
The title has confused people; Pratchett has since explained that Granny is the sea, and the other witches are the fishes (at one point Nanny says that calling Granny 'full of pride' is like calling the sea 'full of water'; water is what the sea is).
It is based on the "ancient phrase" The big sea does not care which way the little fishes swim, which Pratchett made up at some point before the story, and finally used in Night Watch.

I like how this story examines the difference between “nice” and good, and wants and needs. People want “nice” but Granny knows people need good.

Yeah. That seems to be the general topic of the "witches" books in the discworld series. It's always the choice between want and need, nice or good, bad or evil. Especially centered around Granny Weatherwax.

😊look up the news article ...
Some of Pratchett's early works were released under a nom de plume.
      (mother's maiden name)
Similar to the circumstances of the childrens book THE CARPET PEOPLE....
(Which I found was great for reading to my six year old.as part of the bedtime ritual.)
The book was cowritten by T.P(16)and Sir T.P(50ish)

I believe Terry Pratchett used to be in the Nuclear Industry before he unleashed his quiet genius on us all!
That would make the little bit about Fusion an Easter Egg (Pictures TP smiling at the notion).
I am interested in the hanging of accents on characters ..... I had not imagined them as being Irish, but Norfolk. But it does work well! Once it gets in your head, that is! ;o)

I thought it was an American accent? Disappointing as I was expecting an English accented narrator.

Thankyou. I hadn't heard of this one, i bought the colour of magic and the light fantastic the day they were issued from Dark They Were And Golden Eyed. The rest was history as the saying goes, but had to drastically thin down my library when i got married, there wasn't enough room for all my clobber. I think Terry Pratchet did for Sword & Sorcery, what Douglas Adams did for sci-fi. The world would be a far duller place without such writing talents.

Check with your local library, Sir Terry's short stories featured in some fantasy fiction collections. There's also a short story collection that was issued on the sad occasion of Sir Terry's death, I think it's called The Time Travelling Caveman.

I'm not quite sure Granny Weatherwax's voice should sound much nicer when she's being nice. As I was reading this short story, I imagined it to sound so dramatically different from her usual tone of voice-enough to confuse, dismay, shock or raise suspicions in people.

@@stevenwright7424 I must have forgotten that when Harper Collins published "Legend" a collection of short stories allegedly by Pratchett and others (hardback ISBN: 9780002256667, softback ISBN: 0002256665 and subsequent audiobook) most definitely and categorically did not contain a short story entitled "The Sea and Little Fishes" written by Terry Pratchett, despite all evidence to the contrary.
