what i love the most about The Book of Mormon is that there is no hate toward the religion they are able to make fun of it without completely bashing peoples faith and that what makes it so great ^-^
@epiccollision They "destroy" mormonism in this song, but they finish the show clearly saying how religions can make a positive impact in a society, dispite whatever they believe. It doesnt really matter if those stories are true or not, what matters is that is helping people. So they don't actually destroy It
I think their success is based on destroying the ridiculous IDEAS of faith, while making the PEOPLE themselves sympathetic and identifiable. Also, there is no reason why, in order to help people and do good things for the world, it is necessary to believe in crazy things.
It is critical, but it's not a pretentious, sanctimonious, sneering type of criticism, so it never comes across as mean-spirited. Like the story of him stealing a donut, and thinking he'd be cast down to hell for it. It's obviously an absurd thing to believe, but you sympathise with him being brainwashed into thinking that would actually happen. And if anything your empathy is enhanced due to the absurdity of the belief, rather than the character being otherised for thinking in such a different way. So there's no cruelty, and if anything, you just root for mormons to hopefully get out of their religion (or at the very least the more absurd aspects that are harmful - like the "Turn it off" mantra.) IMO It's the perfect way to criticise mormons (or extreme religion in general.) Basically... yes your beliefs about getting your own planet are bizarre, but no that doesn't mean you're a bad person, it doesn't mean you're unintelligent either. It just means you were told something that isn't true before you were old enough to question it. You're just left free to examine your beliefs after watching the musical, without having to go on the defensive, or double-down, due to having your pride hurt by mean-spirited mockery etc. There's no derision or judgment, just understanding, empathy, an olive branch and a bit of healthy, good-natured ridicule.

Trey Matt and Robert were so awesome and chill, but what on earth was up with those interviewers? The woman interrupted them multiple times just to bash Mormons or try to make one of the guests bash Mormons, and the guys kept trying to patronize them and he wouldn't stop banging on about how he's soooo good at picking which musicals are good or not. "Well lets not all get too carried away because you do point out that they(mormons) aren't very smart. Either their philosophical or-" I'm glad Trey was able to explain the whole point of how silly they make mormons. It's as if the interviewers want to pick apart the musical and find some agenda that matches theirs.
In my mission, my mission president showed the clip created by Tre Parker and Matt Stone about the "Hell director" where everyone has been sent to hell and they ask who made it to heaven in one of our monthly missionary conferences. The reply by the hell director is "the mormons." It was hilarious. I am learning more and more that Tre Parker and Matt Stone really do try to portray the comical aspects of how we mormons come across to the world while still commenting on the hardships of what we may face.

Susan Haskins really needs to up her professionalism. I can't believe that she'd so jarringly interrupt Matt, Trey, and Robert--on MULTIPLE occasions--just to express her hate of Mormons. Possibly one of the worst interviewers I've seen. Let your guests talk, and stop trying to push for things they've already told you don't exist within their work.
What "hatred of Mormons"? Historically (some would say currently) women have not been treated as equals in the culture, to put it mildly. It says in the book that black skin was a curse; the church lagged behind the rest of the society in accepting black people as equals. Aren't people even allowed to state facts? Are you referring to her comment that the beliefs are "not too smart"? That wasn't polite, but it didn't even approach "hatred," and you know, if you are going to go around professing wild tales to the world, which have been disproved, you have to be ready to take some criticism. Have you seen the Mormon South Park episode, the soundtrack of which is Parker going, "dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb"? Is THAT "hatred"?
I feel really bad for Matt and Trey; having to deal with those two pretentious, narcissistic interviewers must have been a struggle. At times it actually seemed like something South Park would parody.
I think these cunts have a stick shoved so deep up their arses that they are annoyed because of the success of The Book of Mormon. Pretentious douchebags (specially the guy).
This female producer is so hateful. Good God. She is just a hate-filled bigot. She makes these guys look like saints. They actually treat Mormons with a lot of respect.
Only musicals I've ever seen are the ones they did and i can say Book of Mormon is still god damn hilarious. Dudes have been making me laugh my ass off for almost 30 years.
The host clearly doesn't know anything about Matt and Trey if he thinks that they are new to musicals. They've been writing musicals since they were in university. Unbelievable.
Wow, Susan Haskins is laughably unprofessional. Doesn't even know the difference between Mormons and cults that haven't had anything to do with the LDS church in decades. It's fine to dislike something, but educate yourself first please. It's ironic that Matt and Trey are the ones who wrote an "offensive" (debatable) musical about Mormonism but Susan is the one person on this stage who appears to be bigoted against Mormons.
I don't think she qualifies as "bigoted" for criticizing aspects of Mormon culture that have been, or still are, bigoted. Also, I think anyone who is completely honest about the history will admit that the cults you reference are closer to the original conception of the founder, than the mainstream, modern church is. I think criticizing a culture, or the ideas people actually hold, is very different than presupposing things about them based on inherent characteristics like race, gender, etc. People are not born with their ideas. If someone professes belief in wild things that have been disproved, criticizing those beliefs does not equate to being bigoted toward that person.
I lost it at 24:40: Interviewer: "They warned you about other things [in the broadway community]?" Matt: "Yeah, people can be like, snobby, or like, you know, I don't know, elitist, and like, they're not gonna accept you in the theatre community... People warned us of this *circular hand motion*. I don't know - I haven't had that -" Honestly like how HIGH did the interviewers hold their noses, it's almost not watchable.
@@joshuabunting882 There are many. Fawn Brodie's book is the still the classic--Mormon readers hate it, but it is legitimate scholarship, and more sympathetic to Smith than most other authors would have been. Control--particularly of women--was at the very heart of it. Past a certain point, it really became all about "living the principle." The church abandoned the principle only because the religion could not have survived the pressure being put on it by the "gentile" world.
I could sit here and listen to Trey and Matt talk for hours and hours on end. They're such smart, switched on guys, way ahead of their time and always consummate professionals and true gents. Is there anywhere with interviews like this minus the fucking bell-end interviewers?
lol you can tell the interviewers are really uncomfortable because Matt and Trey are completely different types of people, especially in there sense of humor and now there part of something these guys care about and are really successful in it in there minds there thinking "why the hell are these guys apart of musical theater? this isn't right"
I saw this at the Kennedy Center when I visited my brother recently. I have to say it was entertaining, but that is one jacked-up show. But knowing who created it, one cannot be surprised.
No actually I've met in person Matthew and Trey and they were pretty pedantic in making clear they despise religion and have intent to mock it despite how interested they are in the Mormon faith. It is an untouched gold mine of humor in Treys own words.
There are endless possibilities to poke fun at Mormonism. I can say that as an ex Mormon after spending 36 years in the church before getting kicked out for Tourette’s. I wish Matt and Trey would do more Mormon content because they have only scratched the surface of what they could do.
Its sad because Trey and Matt didn't create The Book Of Mormon as hate for the Mormon religion. They put it out as almost like a fascination love letter to Mormons for how kind the can generally be despite the crazy stories they believe. Trey and Matt make jokes about people and ideas... they're not bad people like this clown of a woman is. Just because you make a joke about something doesn't mean you hate it. I guess that's what this woman thinks though. She should go watch the All About Mormons episode. Just because you think a religion is dumb doesn't mean you have to be an actual dick to people when they're not even doing anything to anyone. The whole point of the episode and the musical is how the Mormonism can definietly be seen as silly and dumb, but also fascinating to learn about and can be an engaging experience to talk to actual Mormons. The musical was never about "haha look how stupid Mormons are"... it was "yea..the stories are silly and what not, but the Mormon religion and Mormons in general are fascinating nice people who want to help, so who gives a shit". That's pretty much the message.
To add to my last comment, if anybody finds the Book of Mormon Broadway fascinating, there is another movie I would recommend. It is pretty comical. It was made by a Mormon about missionaries that went to I want to say Holland. It is called "the Best Two Years." It gives a pretty accurate depiction of what missionaries go through at least in Europe. It is actually quite funny and has shows the interesting dynamics that can surface between companionships in a mission.
First ten minutes: Questions found on damn near every Trey and Matt interview Second ten minutes: Mormon Bashing from the hosts (Susan mostly) Last 6 minutes: Theater Talk
I think I am in agreement with a lot of people in the comments, that the interviewers don't do themselves any good. Am a British Atheist, but the woman interviewer is trying to get the panel to say that they hate Mormons. Am sure like Trey Parker said, there are Mormons who deserve to be hated on, but the vast majority of them and am friends with some Mormons, yes some of their beliefs are "out there" but their kindness is so huge, Mormons are really nice and fascinating people. So the ladies Mormon hate is actually a bit offensive even to me!!
It's OBVIOUS these two supposed critics have never watched South Park. Their questions are those of someone who has heard of the show and the mainstream opinion about how supposedly offensive it is but have never watched it to find out how moral it actually is.
I grew up near Utah hearing that either Tre Parker or Matt Stone used to be returned mormon missionaries that fell away from the church. This clip clears up that they just grew up around mormons. Also another common bit of information that Mormons would often say is that Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails was a returned mormon missionary that left the church because his girlfriend married another individual. This is most likely a myth.
these hosts are excruciating to listen to. imagine if every dude went around telling us how good at his job he was and this woman is so miserable, even in her compliments, which may have been the first one to give of her life.
I think Robert Lopez knew to say that somehow like "Oh my next musical is gonna be about Mormons and Joseph Smith..." and then of course they're gonna bite for that. He just wanted to work with them. Didn't strike me that way. I don't think she even approached "bashing" Mormons. There are aspects of Mormon culture that deserve criticism as much as any other culture. It is an oversimplification to say any whole GROUP of people is nice, because the members are generally polite and don't swear.
"Bible fan fiction" is the best way I've ever heard to describe Mormonism. Amazing.
Yes it really is the best way to describe it.
Ugh.
lol randy marsh had a bro off with Stephen Sondheim haha
Bro DOWN :)
"Well lets not all get too carried away because you do point out that they(mormons) aren't very smart. Either their philosophical or-"
I'm glad Trey was able to explain the whole point of how silly they make mormons.
This host is upset that "Amateurs" came in and getting props for an amazing Broadway experience. They keep jumping into different mediums and doing very well with each. Condescension is just jealousy / concern from an insecure person
That comment also annoyed me. Theatre has this kind of elitist mentality behind it.
I honestly thought he was just being facetious, knowing they like to kid around. I thought he seemed thrilled to be interviewing them. But if he was being elitist, I didn't catch it. Then again, I'm not that bright 😂.
@@kikib8434 that's what i thought too. its hard to tell, but its good to note that he doesn't just bring that up one time... maybe he does feel that way.
@@aPumpkn that's a totally fair point. I may have to watch him interview other people to compare. This is the only interview with him that I've seen (I watched it purely for Trey and Matt 😁).
+vvnn yeh I thought i was the only one noticing this .. what a bitch!
vvnn
Amen! No pun intended,,
Trey and Matt like Mormons.
It's such grating foolishness.
Dom Espo
yeah, lol, they've made four musical MOVIES. that's WAAAY harder than stage shows
I think these cunts have a stick shoved so deep up their arses that they are annoyed because of the success of The Book of Mormon. Pretentious douchebags (specially the guy).
***** That's bullshit. Making a broadway show and making a flim is so different that you can't even say one is harder to make than another
If this was 20 years ago they probably would have farted on the interviewer.
It was a joke, are you people really that sensitive?
She seem to hate mormons! Matt and Trey = legends ❤️
This female producer is so hateful. Good God. She is just a hate-filled bigot. She makes these guys look like saints. They actually treat Mormons with a lot of respect.
She really wanted them to just hate on Mormons!
Only musicals I've ever seen are the ones they did and i can say Book of Mormon is still god damn hilarious. Dudes have been making me laugh my ass off for almost 30 years.
Trey and Matt could have shredded these horrible interviewers. I applaud their restraint!
I kept thinking how much they would roast them if they had the chance but they showed great restraint 😊
Remember the South Park episode where Jarrod from subway wins biggest Douche in the universe? Well, the host of this show now holds that award
Sean O'reilly John Edwards?
Yeah that was joh Edwards
@@Gino3618 damn it you're right. I mis remembered
I feel that the interviewers were dismissing Robert Lopez, an EGOT winner. Who are these people again?
I love how this man simply ignores that they wrote an entire movie musical, over and over again.
She wasn't nagging. She was just asking the questions that she had to ask. She proved she liked it throughout the rest of the interview
I’m late but this is exactly what I was thinking
This show feels like the sort of thing you would see being mocked in South Park.
My brother in law was a mormon missionary. He is a wonderful husband and father. My sister picked a wonderful man.
To clarify, there are good mormons that follow the "rules" that are not fanatics.
+Brett Powers to clarify, no one cares.
watched the whole video, matt and trey are legends!
❤❤❤ I love how I can hear the explanation of this now.
Best show ever🤘
I lost it at 24:40:
Interviewer: "They warned you about other things [in the broadway community]?"
Matt: "Yeah, people can be like, snobby, or like, you know, I don't know, elitist, and like, they're not gonna accept you in the theatre community... People warned us of this *circular hand motion*. I don't know - I haven't had that -"
Honestly like how HIGH did the interviewers hold their noses, it's almost not watchable.
This lady has no idea that FLDS and LDS are different religions...
Seriously! Flds and lds are completely different.
@Dan Palmer
They’re a little different
Stop trying to separate yourself from the past
They share a recent common ancestor, and the FLDS lives more according to the founder's original conception of what the religion should be.
@@billscannell93 Do you have a source for the Flds being more accurate to Joseph smith’s teachings?
@@joshuabunting882 There are many. Fawn Brodie's book is the still the classic--Mormon readers hate it, but it is legitimate scholarship, and more sympathetic to Smith than most other authors would have been. Control--particularly of women--was at the very heart of it. Past a certain point, it really became all about "living the principle." The church abandoned the principle only because the religion could not have survived the pressure being put on it by the "gentile" world.
That lady really has it out for the Mormons.
I could sit here and listen to Trey and Matt talk for hours and hours on end. They're such smart, switched on guys, way ahead of their time and always consummate professionals and true gents. Is there anywhere with interviews like this minus the fucking bell-end interviewers?
These two supposed critics, have obviously never seen an episode of South Park.
lol you can tell the interviewers are really uncomfortable because Matt and Trey are completely different types of people, especially in there sense of humor and now there part of something these guys care about and are really successful in it
in there minds there thinking "why the hell are these guys apart of musical theater? this isn't right"
I saw this at the Kennedy Center when I visited my brother recently. I have to say it was entertaining, but that is one jacked-up show. But knowing who created it, one cannot be surprised.
23:57 what did Trey say? I couldn’t understand it
Trey and Matt are so cool!
I wonder what “TAC” is
Matt and Trey are too classy
Thank you!
oh man love Baseketball as a kid!
Thank you ☺️ for the laughs !
Bravo Bravo 🌹
You get a new companion on average every 3 to 4 months.
Hey, Matt and Trey, when are you doing a musical about the koran?
Asking for a friend .
i wish more ppl would take this view. Yous sir are a very smart man
Just to clarify, you are not with the same companion for two straight years--thank goodness!
Oh yeah only having one companion would be awful😂 . I had about 11-12 companions I think.
When that guy asked what it was like to work with amateurs, I thought he was referring to his interviewing
super high quality!!!!!!!
I love these guys!
Trey and Matt are the greatest all time
All I need is my girl and my truck,. and some Rogers and HAMMERSTEEEIINNNN!!
Good Lord the lady host keeps trying to demonize the mormons
"You don't like pretentiousness"
lol the irony of the hosts saying that is amazing
To add to my last comment, if anybody finds the Book of Mormon Broadway fascinating, there is another movie I would recommend. It is pretty comical. It was made by a Mormon about missionaries that went to I want to say Holland. It is called "the Best Two Years." It gives a pretty accurate depiction of what missionaries go through at least in Europe. It is actually quite funny and has shows the interesting dynamics that can surface between companionships in a mission.
Saw it, it was pretty good
Brett Powers
Another good movie made by a Mormon about Mormons is Brigham City.
A murder mystery.
Another is The RM
Best two years is hilarious. Both as a an active Mormon and as an exmormon. I’ll always enjoy that movie😂
Matt looked fine there
That intro music is completely insane
I like the way Matt Stone says "Fidd-e-ler" on the Roof.
Matt and Trey- "please don't put me in the opening"
Jim Bruer's always great.
First ten minutes: Questions found on damn near every Trey and Matt interview
Second ten minutes: Mormon Bashing from the hosts (Susan mostly)
Last 6 minutes: Theater Talk
I think I am in agreement with a lot of people in the comments, that the interviewers don't do themselves any good. Am a British Atheist, but the woman interviewer is trying to get the panel to say that they hate Mormons. Am sure like Trey Parker said, there are Mormons who deserve to be hated on, but the vast majority of them and am friends with some Mormons, yes some of their beliefs are "out there" but their kindness is so huge, Mormons are really nice and fascinating people. So the ladies Mormon hate is actually a bit offensive even to me!!
Lady's
I can’t wait for Scientology the Musical!
I hope the book of mormon will do some sort of tour or something lol
or atleast release a movie of it- Or i'll never get to see it cuz I live in Cali
Yes, there are definitely jokes in this portrayal that only mormons will get.
I think Robert Lopez knew to say that somehow like "Oh my next musical is gonna be about Mormons and Joseph Smith..." and then of course they're gonna bite for that. He just wanted to work with them. UNDERSTANDABLE. And thank God man they created a masterpiece together. I hope the next one is about Scientology. But I am afraid it won't be because they're famously litigious meaning they will SUE just about anyone that even dares speak out against them. They're that controlling of everything.
Cool interview
yes you can. its on the southpark website streamed for free
"Buckle up buccaroos!!!!!'
The Book Of Mormon is one of the best acts Broadway has seen in a long long time
