You mentioned that the Declaration of Domicile states you are a “full time” resident of Florida. Actually you are declaring your intent to be a permanent Florida resident, even if you spend time in other states. “Full time” implies that you can’t be a snowbird and still intend to be a Florida resident. It’s meant to help prove your intent to the state that you were previously domiciled in.
For any snowbirds thinking they want to become FL residents: Don’t be too quick to declare / make your FL house your primary residence when you keep another house in a different state. Consider you may be exposing yourself to potential tax due on the gain on the sale of your house up north or west… As long as you lived in the property as your primary residence for 24 months within the five years before the home's sale, you can qualify for the capital gains tax exemption. Otherwise you pay capital gains tax when you sell.
I just went through all of this last fall so I didn't listen to the whole video. Here's a tip for property owners in Sumter County. Once your property appears in their online system you can help protect from property fraud by registering with Sumter County free to get a notification if anything changes. Also Florida is working on changing the laws so no permit needed to carry. All other current requirements would remain in place.
Just called my assessors office. Watching your video and knew nothing about homestead exemption. It's for low income individuals. At least that's what think I got from the very monotone man. Washington State.

I almost didn't watch this video because I knew that I had this figured out. Well I'm so glad I did because you saved my butt on the VIN verification. Had I not watched this video, I would have showed up without the VIN verification form, and we would have wasted a lot of money on hotels and plane tickets. So, I owe you a beer.
That's really smart that you became a resident of FL on the first of the year. That avoids having to file a partial year resident tax return. If you're a resident of two states during a year, you have to file a partial tax refund for both states. They screw you out of a lot of refunds on the partial year returns. I learned this when I had to move midyear for a job.

Excellent info. Agree this stuff can get a little complicated. Since we sold our home in R.I. the end of April 2022 and relocated to TV right after that to a rental and purchased a home a few days later, that along with R.I. taxing all income including our SS and my Federal pension which we paid quarterly state taxes, we have decided it will be much easier to have our R.I. CPA do our taxes for 2022. Next year after living permanently in Florida all of 2023 and having to pay no state income tax, doing our taxes will be far less complicated.
@@RustyNelson Yes it is always something with the taxes!! Several years ago on our way out of Foxwoods casino in CT I threw my last $20 into a progressive slot machine and on the 3rd spin hit the jackpot for $50k. I had the casino take out Federal taxes from my winnings, and even though the money was not won in R.I. they considered it income and wanted their share of taxes!! Glad to leave that all behind along with my $8,500/year property taxes. Even with our $32k TV bond + property taxes + amenity fee we are still shy around $2,500 of that $8,500 we used to pay just for property taxes.
We are in the same boat with taxes, except in Calif. Moved here in November, closed escrow on 12/15, so 2022 taxes are almost all in Calif, plus the capital gains tax from selling our home. We’ll be happy when taxes are simpler for 2023. Unfortunately, property taxes are higher for us in TV than Calif. Oh well. 🤷🏼♀️
"Retirement Income" and income in retirement are two different things. If you have income from taxable accounts, like mutual funds not in a 401K, it taxable in PA even if you are retired.
Not on topic, but it doesn't appear to me that there are any USPS post offices within The Villages. Yes, there are mailboxes and drop boxes and one can buy stamps online, but there are times when one needs to physically go to the Post Office. Am I missing something?

You recommend bringing 6 documents total. For the Legal Name Change document, what if you were married and had you name changed 40 years ago? You need that form? Not sure if it is still around.

Hi Rusty - Love your shows. I enjoy watching them. Just an FYI > The Real ID program has been pushed back to May 7, 2025. It was set for May of 2023 but it changed just before the New Year. Anyone can see this in their own State's - Rule of the Road booklets. In IL, it's on page 3 of that booklet. I teach Driver's Ed to teens & always show - the detailed information in the booklet - for every new class (monthly). I saw that it had changed at the start of January 2023. This should give everyone plenty of time to get their Real ID Driver's License or State ID (but not both), by then.
Hey Rusty, I have an active and real ID in my state. Does Florida just swap it out or do I need to bring all of the documents with me? Drivers test written and or driving as well?
Moved here a year and a half ago. Florida does not swap out your drivers license. You don’t have to take a test but you do have to provide all the documents they require.
