Highlights of this sparkling occasion include lighthearted music by Nicolai, Mozart, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Johann Strauss II, Kollo, and Lincke, performed by singers including Dorothea Roschmann and Simone Nold, dancers from the Staatsoper Ballet, fifteen-year-old violin virtuoso Raphael Christ, and the inimitable H.K. Gruber singing Kurt Weill's "Berlin im Licht."

Lived in Berlin as a child. Remember this song very well.
Es ist eines der schönsten Gassenhauer. f rüher wurde es im Berliner Zoo zu Pfingsten gespielt.
Die Deutschen, auch wenn ich sie schon ein Leben lang kenne und besuche, schaffen es immer wieder, mich zu überraschen. Wie einzigartig sie sind, Musik in Gefühl zu verwandeln, niemand ist besser als sie!

Ich bin Berliner (JG 1965), mit dieser Musik wuchs ich im Elternhaus und bei den Großeltern auf. Es ist zutieftst bedauerlich, das diese Tradition nicht mehr aufrecht gehalten wird, dazu gehört auch die Musik von Paul Lincke.
Die Berliner Philharmoniker spielen dieses Stück jedes Jahr zum Abschluss ihrer Saison in der Waldbühne ;)
Der Sportpalastwalzer gehört auch dazu.

This piece is one of my favourites and I'm an Aussie. I love Paul Linke's music! This music lives in my bones and is so exciting.

@@SDufau-bb5yb - Thank you for your comment, right now I have this playing on endless repeat. This music lifts the soul way above anything else and the politics we hear so much of. I have played church and concert organ for most of my life and I'm going to introduce this music before the service. Joy like this needs to be shared.

With its beautiful smell/aroma (smell smell)
Where just seldomly something goes wrong (wrong wrong)*

. . . and so on
It really also sounds funny because of this rhyming syllable "-uft" which is super seldom and I've never heard it as a syllable for a rhyme anywhere else. Which makes it even more fitting for Berlin, I love that.
(*=not quite, hard to translate, the word is used more because of rhyming actually)

Philip Kerr wrote a series of novels about detective Bernie Gunther. The first three novels are collected in "Berlin Noir," which I recommend. I'm guessing that this musical piece was referred to in one of his novels, so I came here to hear the music.
