In 2019, I was at Silver Dollar City when this ride was shut down--on 5 different visits to the park. This ride is like Derrick Rose in the NBA, or the ice cream machine at McDonald's. Great when it is there, but is constantly needing fixed.
There are a TON of moving parts and components to this ride, besides the pneumatics. Reliability is getting better. To put it in perspective, it takes 3 hours to inspect and open, IF nothing needs maintenance. She’s a complex beast.
Powder Keg really took me by surprise. I thought that it would be rough, not enjoyable, but I thought this was the most underrated coasters I've ever ridden. It's a very fun and intense coaster!
I have ridden rollercoasters in 9 states. This is one of my favorite rides of all time. Particularly going straight from the launch into the airtime and into a drop.
Me and my friends rode this one together and we felt like the launch was more forceful in the front seat. We all loved it to the extent that we immediately jumped back in line to do it again just because we loved the launch. Heck, one of our teachers who came on our college trip who I think was like 60-65ish, he rode Powder Keg and loved it too despite not being that big into roller coasters.
Being a frequent visitor to SDC, (as it is my home park) I have to chime in and say this is the parks most popular coaster, it almost always has guests lined up out the front of the entrance, even since Time Traveler opened which has similar capacity. The consensus I hear from a lot of GP is that it does by far have a much more forceful launch and a lot more airtime which makes it more thrilling.
I haven't ridden it, but I have to applaud the owners of the park for not simply scrapping the old coaster but hiring S&S to recycle it into something new.
What I love about the layout of this ride is how they used leftover fragments of the old ride to sort of “frighten the newbies” by shoving a broken track in their face. As well as an old broken train smashed on the roof of the launch house.
I rode this thing years ago, I believe in 2012. I absolutely loved this thing just because of the sheer uniqueness. Part of me is scared to go back being that looking back I was GP with less than 30 credits at the time (I've said I prefer Powder Keg to the stratas before, but maybe it was just experience being that my first strata was my third park with the enthusiast standpoint. However, maybe it's that the launch is genuinely fast) and today I'm a hardcore coaster enthusiast and will get my 200th credit in November. Needless to say, I've ridden a lot more coasters than I had when I rode Powder Keg.
@Logan Fadil Some of the coasters he mentioned are actually at Dollywood. Dollywood is the sisterpark to Silver Dollar City. They're both owned by Herschend. None of those have been removed, they just aren't all at the same park.
The whole viewing area and launch building greatly build-up the anticipation for the ride, especially with that first airtime hill in full view. This ride scores huge points for being especially memorable. Its more about the psychological intimidation of that launch. Its the perfect starter/gateway coaster for kids or teens.
It's funny how almost everyone thinks this is more of a family coaster, but one of my friends who loves Outlaw Run and Wildfire is still terrified of this coaster (due to the unexpectedly forceful launch and the airtime as you fly over the mountain).
this is 2nd best at the park for me. Its got the quick and forceful launch, followed by great ejector airtime. Plus the high speed low to the ground with the overbanks are awesome too.
Great job with this video, and I always appreciate your honest reviews. It is definitely a very strange and unique ride, and that is part of its appeal! You can't ride anything else like it in the country. And it has remained popular among guests. On any given day its line rivals that of Wildfire and Outlaw Run, and it's always much longer than Thunderation. I don't see the popularity dying down anytime soon. Looking forward to the next coaster reviews!
You are very right. It is downright weird. I am lucky enough to be from Missouri and as a kid we went to branson every year on vacation because my dad is a codger who refused to leave the state when I was a kid 🤣 But I remember when they opened buzz saw falls. My sister and I would ride it over and over. It was truly a one of a mind ride being half log flume and half roller coaster. So when it closed prematurely and was changed over to powderkeg I wasnt sure how they would make use of the old track. And basically they just salvaged the life hill. But I can still make out areas where buzz saw falls used to be on the later part of the ride. Buzz saw falls had a large saw that came down over your head at the end like you were about to be chopped and the chain life was towards the end of the rode and you ended with a splash down. Tl;dr buzz saw falls was weird so it makes sense that powderkeg is also weird. But I love/loved them both and I'm glad I can go ride powderkeg and bring back memories of my childhood on buzz saw falls.
I would definitely recommend Powder Keg to families that want to get kids into roller coasters. It was the first ever non-kiddy coaster I have ridden. I rode this coaster back when I was about 8 and since then I have been obsessed with roller coasters.
I love Powder Keg. Not Time Traveller or Outlaw Run kind of love, but this is a pretty decent back-up coaster. Glass smooth, a good launch and some airtime on the bigger hills.
Totally agree! Powder Keg surprised me a little bit, didn´t expect the airtime moments. It´s really, really strange, there´s no flow, the lifthill and the section afterwards seem pretty pointless. ^^
I feel like I probably like this ride more than most enthusiasts simply due to the fact it was my first launch coaster. It definitely blew me away first time I rode it! With all the coasters I’ve ridden, I feel like if I rode this for the first time more recently, I would’ve enjoyed it but I wouldn’t have loved it lol
When you mentioned people being intimidated by the first drop on Time Traveler? My friend literally backed out when she saw it at the window and left me to ride alone! It may look intimidating, but it's actually quite fun. Powder Keg on the other hand, I have yet to ride because the line is always so long, but it looks pretty awesome even if it isn't "top thrill" material.
Silver Dollar City 's powder keg is probably one of the weirdest roller coasters I have ever ridden don't give me wrong it is a fun ride but even just the history of this thing so mighty Express this rent started off as a premier rides water coaster called Buzzsaw Falls And in 2003 they remove the water coaster part and used and part of the track and then onto it using S&S track connect the two creating an S&S launch coaster like what the heck that's just so strange I mean great use of you know what is already there but the whole concept behind the thing is just really strange and you can even see that in the right layout so let me dive into this ride bit more so those of You haven't ran this can get a better idea of what this ride experience Is like you're gonna frist start by Boarding your S&S Trains and these are very similar to if you've written S&S scream and swing these are essentially the same restraints but it's on a roller coaster so already you know kind of weird but you side out of the station and go up transfer up to the lauch track it literally sides you up and over using this counterweight it's crazy It reminds me of how like the Mr freeze roller coasters side you out onto the launch track. this kind same thing of does the same thing so you pull frowrad a bit come to a stop you're roll back a tiny bit and then there's this stop light that goes from red yellow to green and you lauch out this 053 miles per hour in just over two seconds so it's a epic forceful Launch remember S&S is. the same company that did dodonpa which is the world's fastest accelerating on the roller coaster. I 'd say it a forceful Launch so really I enjoy that and you actually go up an over Airtime Hill first thing so again remember how I said this layout is kind of weird we first started things off with an air time Hill and then following it we have this section that is epic much all low to the so ground so you really can't get too much footage of it from inside the park but it's essentially just twisting around just load the ground and then actually switch over the to the buzzsaw falls section you can literally see where the tracks which is over is a completely different track. style and I wouldn't say that one style of track is smoother than the other like you won't feel the transition or anything the transition is done very smoothly and that section is what leads into the lift hill yes this coaster has a transfer track a launch and a lift hill the highest point is in the second half of the ride I said this ride is just weird just over a 100 Fleet tall you go into turnaround and your drop let's it's say decnet drop it's not very steep anything and I also wouldn't say that this is one where you really come like Soraiong Out of your seat any crazy ejctor moment or anything probably the most air time you're gonna get on this ride is on that air time Hill after that l that but after that drop you actually go into this like. banked turnaround and the into the break run so that section after lift Hill is rather my opinion. most of the ride spent from From Launch leading to the lift Hill so if I had one I complaint would say it would be kind of nice to see it like balanced out a bit more where you see the second half of Power Keg like as long as the first half but also I'm glad that the lift Hill and drop is there in the. frist place because if the ride just ended and didn't have that section with the lift or the drop the ride would be like really short so I am glad it's there definitely I think is a ride that when you go to Silver Dollar City deinfey make sure to ride it just because it's such a strange experience you know it like I mentioned in the beginning in the video it's a coaster it's a epic coaster it ins't gonna like blow you away or anything I think epic Ride what not also that I would say would be at the top of many trains bucket list of like rides that they must do or anything you know for rides at Silver Dollar City our there like that you go for outlaw run or now time traveler powder keg gets because now silver dollar city has epic top two but this ride isn't bad or anything I think is where To be a good coaster to start some trains off to like introduce them to launches it's not super tall I mean it doesn't go upside or down anything it's definitely thrill coaster but also I think that this coaster would be better to start Trains on
I rode this year and its legit mine and my whole group's favorite coaster @ the park since outlaw is too rough & aggressive unless you're in the front.. and since time traveler barely spins on most rides
I've rode this coaster back in 2009 it was the first Silver Dollar City ride I have ever ridden on and even back then it was weird, to me it was like Disneyland's Space Mountain meets Six Flags Magic Mountain's Revolution, overall I don't know if I wanna go back on again but it was a good experience.
Well said Taylor. This was my fisrt launch coaster and it gave me a fun and enjoyable ride experience. Although I'm not a huge fan of the liftt hill during the middle of the ride, because I expect it to manuver through the track after the launch, it's doesn't deminish the ride experience. Still,it's nice to know that I'm still learning about how this ride was a combination of a water coaster and S&S track. Now I know whh the tracks structure changes during the ride layout. Also, I wonder how you missed the themeing of Power Keg as the roller coaster moved into the launch section of the ride. Once the track is in place you hear a few guys talking to each other uttering a line like "You're too close to that nitro" when one of them says "Do you smell smoke?"and another person says after that "it's gonna blow!" The rest of the themeing is seen off of the ride as the building shakes and spits a flame out of a chimney as the coaster launches down fhe track. I'm not saying this to spite you, but personally, I enjoy that thenatic element of the ride because the "explosion" from the building is what launches the coaster down the track.
I watched this video before my recent trip so I thought I had a good idea about what it was going to be like. That being said.. I got placed back row and sat in the right side of the train. I absolutely got EJECTED over every hill and drop. I was not prepared for the intensity to be honest lol It ended up surpassing my expectations honestly. Such a fun little ride.
Side note. Had a similar experience with Wildfire. First ride on Wildfire was front row and wasnt that great. I got off of it wanting more. However, my second ride was back row and I think it was one of the better B&M experiences I've had. The scenery mixed with the back row intensity made it for me. Complete night and day difference between front a back for Wildfire.
Rode it three times it was very fun. Rode it once in back, once in front and once in third row. I got at least 5 seconds of airtime on the whole ride. Third best roller coaster at SDC.
Personally, I actually really like powder keg! I find it and wildfire to be about equal on my coaster enjoyment scale. Outlaw run is CLEARLY the best, but I think that this is still a good ride! You gave a good review for it Taylor, I think you couldn't have talked about it better, although for me (being a stick) I got lots of airtime at many places, especially the second time I rode it when they didn't push my lap bar down very far. Again, great review!
I wanna say Intamin came up with the hydraulic launch because of noise ordinances getting in the way of Knott's Berry Farm getting an air-launch coaster. So Intamin used a hydraulic launch when building Xcelerator, and the rest (as they say) is history.
The launch on this thing is unlike any other I've been on. For some reason it gets my stomach like a steep drop would and it's very fun. SDC is my home park so I'm there all the time but Powder Keg is for sure a weird coaster.
Silver Dollar City 's Powder Keg probably is one weridest roller coasters don't give me wrong premiere Ride water coaster called Buzzsaw Falls in 2003 they remove the water coaster part of the track concert the two creating an S&S launcher Roller Coaster what the heck so let dive into the so you haven't been ran into First Broad your S&S trains if written S&S scream swing. these are restraints but on the Roller Coaster S&S so you're Side out of the station go up transfer 053 Miles pre hour 2.8 sceonds over the counter weight it crazy it reminds me of how Mr freeze too much footage roller coasters side you out of the lunch track this kind of the same thing you pulled frowrad stop roll back to tiny bit there's a stop light red yellow green 053 miles per hour over just 2 sceonds and Air time Hill drop low the ground Switch over there Buzzsaw Falls style of track style of the track and Air time Hill lift Hill transfer track lunch Lift banked denct Drop banked turnaround like you Many trains top of the bucket list for anything or do like the video epic ride ins't gonna. , Fun ride ins't blow you away when you go to silver dollar city for must ride anything to good influence time traveler or outlaw run powder keg is forgetting good kind coaster start some trains off must include for launhes better start some trains on
You didn't mention the theme. This is one of my favorite themed coasters. It even simulates an explosion to launch you. And it has an old buzzsaw falls car smashed up into the roof.
Ik that this is a weird idea, but you should review montezoomas revenge at knotts berry farm. It was my first looping coaster, and I actually think that it's better than silver bullet.
I’m going to Carowinds on Sunday, and I wanted to make a music video there for an Media art class. Can I try to ask if I can film on ride videos? Will they allow it?
I’m going to silver dollar city in like a week the only “big coaster” I’ve ever ridden is powder keg I’ve never been on a coaster with loops so what do you think would be easiest outlaw run wildfire or time travel
technically no. it is the lift hill because the ground below it is on a hill and the hill is on a higher portion of the hill so it is closer to the ground
You should do a commentary on your April fools video. Not the recent one, but the one with six flags buying Disney and flight of fear catching on fire. I think it'd be funny!
This ride is fun, but it's just weird. First of all, was is it really necessary to transfer to a totally different set of track? Why not just keep it all connected? Then, the siren noise when you take off is a little child-ish. A blast of smoke would have been better. Also, why is there a big hill that you have to climb, just for another 3 seconds of thrill? The end is not very satisfying. Most of all--I have been to SDC 3 times in this summer. All 3 days they had to work on this ride at some point. Let's get things figured out! Not worth waiting over 15 minutes.
I wish pneumatic launches were more common. They’re extremely forceful. The launch on hypersonic XCL (also S&S) at kings dominion was ungodly. Even more powerful than Top Thrill’s.
Elora Maxwell I agree in the summer it gets worse. I have a theory I think it has to do with temperature. When it’s colder like during Christmas not once did I hear of it going down when I was there but during the summer it would go down at least once a day. Maybe the air compressor overheats or something like that.
Outlaw Run has the most downtime in my experience. I go to SDC several times a year and OR has gone down more than once per day almost single time I've went. Idk if I just have really bad luck or if it actually has insane downtime.
Spooky Psyche I think you have bad luck, it's only been down once in all the days that I've been there and even if that's the case its only down an hour or so... maybe I just have bad luck with Powderkeg but who knows. Seems like Time Traveler is down more than it's open too as of now 😂
Spooky Psyche I’ve only witnessed outlaw run go down a handful of times but have heard it does go down more often then it should. Most of the time I witnessed it was a quick reset and it was back up and running.
Most launch coasters are down often. I would say that this one in particular is actually on the lesser end. But, in comparison to the other rides at the park, yes, it is down quite a bit.
I like how they recycled the old coaster instead of just scrapping it. Other parks take note!
Kennywood did it too lol
Were looking at you RMC!!! If you don't know RMC turns horrible rides **cough cough** *Mean Streak* and turns them into some of the best coasters like Steel Vengeance.
GP sees promo, doesn’t ride because they think there’s a giant buzz saw in the middle of the track
Part of it is if there is any precipitation it closes and has to wait until it's totally dry.
Him “it isn’t really gonna blow you away or anything”
Me “it literally blows you away”
Powder Keg really took me by surprise. I thought that it would be rough, not enjoyable, but I thought this was the most underrated coasters I've ever ridden. It's a very fun and intense coaster!
Some GP told me it was good. (The same people who said wildfire is intense) I decided to ignore them, and I really liked it.
I agree the first time I rode it, the launch almost made me passed out.
@@Stephenp503
wildfire is actually quite tame.
I'm terrified of coasters and Wildfire is cake
When Powderkeg opened it is what brought Silver Dollar City to my attention. Its a bucket list coaster for me. I still want to get there.
This was my first ever coaster so it has a special place in my heart.

You need to do a list video on your favorite Top Hats! Best airtime/drop/ effectiveness in the layout etc.
0:36 Taylor saying ‘what the heck!’ with the launching train cracks me up for some reason.
Being a frequent visitor to SDC, (as it is my home park) I have to chime in and say this is the parks most popular coaster, it almost always has guests lined up out the front of the entrance, even since Time Traveler opened which has similar capacity. 2 years late, but I agree. I see Powder Keg have a longer wait than any other ride at the park based on my many visits

So underrated! I honestly believe that this coaster is almost as good Outlaw Run. The launch and airtime is astounding.
Gonna be my first coaster other than the kiddy coaster there
We want to silver dollar city last week! Excellent time! Power Keg was the favorite for my family!
Wow! This rides history is extremely bizzare.
The two dislikes are Outlaw Run and Time Traveler
No. All the roller coasters at SDC are probably in a friend group of 7.

@Logan Fadil not anymore they removed a lil bit of them

My favorite mine train is Road Runner Express at Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Nerdy Elephant I also give it third best.
Again, great review!
i was waiting for this one. You definitely delivered
This is a bucket list ride
I love this coaster was my 7 year olds 2nd major coaster
I might be more excited to ride this than Outlaw Run.
I think that S&S compressed air launches are just as forceful as Intamin hydraulic launches.
Intamin hydraulics aren't as fun though. Air launches are more smooth and seem to make your stomach jump in a way hydraulics can't match.
I have never been on a hydraulic launch. I have done compressed air, LIM, and LSM.
I wanna say Intamin came up with the hydraulic launch because of noise ordinances getting in the way of Knott's Berry Farm getting an air-launch coaster. So Intamin used a hydraulic launch when building Xcelerator, and the rest (as they say) is history.
This was my first coaster. I rode it when I was like 6
They should have every major manufacturer add a piece to the coaster so it’s like the best of all manufacturers
I love that imprint of a rat on the sign
Power keg was among the first coasters I rode.
The launch on this thing is unlike any other I've been on. For some reason it gets my stomach like a steep drop would and it's very fun. SDC is my home park so I'm there all the time but Powder Keg is for sure a weird coaster.
Colton Wiggs I'm definitely the same way. It's to the point I avoid it lol
Gosh darn youtube notifications! Why won't you work!? Why do i need to refresh my page at 2:00 EST in order to get my daily dose of coaster studios!
This was my first launch coaster.
I really like this ride,it is fun and different.
Not to mention the 'splashless' former splashdown.
I saw the lap bar and was like the lord is
With us!!!!
Ive rode a s&s screamin swing and you wont believe where that ride was SILVER DOLLAR CITY
I’ve rode all the coasters but wild fire was my and my sisters favorite and first ride( just my opinion)
Silver Dollar City 's Powder Keg probably is one weridest roller coasters don't give me wrong premiere Ride water coaster called Buzzsaw Falls in 2003 they remove the water coaster part of the track concert the two creating an S&S launcher Roller Coaster what the heck so let dive into the so you haven't been ran into First Broad your S&S trains if written S&S scream swing. these are restraints but on the Roller Coaster S&S so you're Side out of the station go up transfer
053 Miles pre hour 2.8 sceonds over the counter weight it crazy it reminds me of how Mr freeze too much footage roller coasters side you out of the lunch track this kind of the same thing you pulled frowrad stop roll back to tiny bit there's a stop light red yellow green 053 miles per hour over just 2 sceonds and
Air time Hill drop low the ground Switch over there Buzzsaw Falls style of track style of the track and Air time Hill lift Hill transfer track lunch Lift banked denct Drop banked turnaround like you Many trains top of the bucket list for anything or do like the video epic ride ins't gonna. , Fun ride ins't blow you away when you go to silver dollar city for must ride anything to good influence time traveler or outlaw run powder keg is forgetting good kind coaster start some trains off must include for launhes better start some trains on
Every time I go Powder Keg always has the longest line. I think because of the kid factor its only an 42" Rider height.
You didn't mention the theme. This is one of my favorite themed coasters. It even simulates an explosion to launch you. And it has an old buzzsaw falls car smashed up into the roof.
What launch would you compare this launch to? This is a great review!
Hahaha watched the POV before this and was like “wait… did that track style just… change?!?!”
That ending portion is just so short. You'd think S&S would have added a second launch with some more hills before coming back to the station.
Ik that this is a weird idea, but you should review montezoomas revenge at knotts berry farm. It was my first looping coaster, and I actually think that it's better than silver bullet.
I like powder keg more than wildfire.
Great vid they are the highlight of my day!!!
i really want to go here
dang Silver Dollar City have some strange coasters
If you think this ride is weird, wait until your ride one of those S&S Flying Squirrels lol.
I’m going to Carowinds on Sunday, and I wanted to make a music video there for an Media art class. Can I try to ask if I can film on ride videos? Will they allow it?
RealThrillz they more than likely will say no, so I wouldn't even bother. Just film from off the ride
I’m going to silver dollar city in like a week the only “big coaster” I’ve ever ridden is powder keg I’ve never been on a coaster with loops so what do you think would be easiest outlaw run wildfire or time travel
Silver Dollar City 's powder keg what the coaster house that's on First Broad S&S Launch coaster if wreent S&S scream swing
The first airtime Hill is the tallest part of the ride but great video
technically no. it is the lift hill because the ground below it is on a hill and the hill is on a higher portion of the hill so it is closer to the ground
You might have already, but please review Blazing Fury!
So... is this an S&S coaster, Premier Rides coaster, or both??
You should do a commentary on your April fools video. Not the recent one, but the one with six flags buying Disney and flight of fear catching on fire. I think it'd be funny!
Eliza Pii YAASS
Silver Dollar City 's powder keg probably
Looks fun
Love the reviews!!!
You should do a video on a theme park in the Netherlands, it is the Efteling.
I'll be going this summer, so there will be plenty of videos from there coming soon!
Powderkeg slaps yo except for that chain lif
This ride is fun, but it's just weird. First of all, was is it really necessary to transfer to a totally different set of track? Why not just keep it all connected?
Then, the siren noise when you take off is a little child-ish. A blast of smoke would have been better.
Also, why is there a big hill that you have to climb, just for another 3 seconds of thrill? The end is not very satisfying.
Most of all--I have been to SDC 3 times in this summer. All 3 days they had to work on this ride at some point. Let's get things figured out!
Not worth waiting over 15 minutes.
Yay, an another review
Is this opened during Christmas season. Or is it too cold.
it is as long as the weather permits
Okay so what’s the temperature limit.
@@zz6-z i think its pretty high like 44 degrees or so
I wish pneumatic launches were more common. They’re extremely forceful. The launch on hypersonic XCL (also S&S) at kings dominion was ungodly. Even more powerful than Top Thrill’s.
This ride has so much downtime! Seriously it's down at least once a day in the summer!
