It's to drill a successful exploratory well and prove that you know what you're doing. You can work out terms with the land owners, rent used equipment and pipe and get roughness to work cheap. These are all things that tommy can help out with since he's made mistakes in the past and can steer cooper to making good decisions. Once you drill a successful well you can go to a bank with a winning record and ask for financing to start field production.

I laugh out loud at his daughter telling him her "deal" with her boyfriend. No girl is going to do that. None. a 3rd grader could write more realistic dialogue.
