  • Excavating a Natural Swimming Pond with a Yanmar Vio 25 Mini Excavator
    I show how we fill up our water tank for the off grid cabin. Then quickly show my solar power charge controllers doing an equalization charge. We grease the Yanmar Vio 25-6a Mini Excavator then start building a small retaining wall. After that we do most of the excavation for our natural swimming pond. This pond will be filtered to keep the nutrient density low to prevent string algae and other unwanted water clarity issues.

    I was telling my wife about your excavator and how the company you bought it from had been really good to deal with and that you had left their information on the machine so at least they were getting some advertising for it. Well I guess the term "service after the sale" really does mean something to them. I live in Missouri and my wife told me my less than 1/2 acre city lot did not need an excavator, no matter how small. If I lived anywhere near you I am sure if I needed to rent or buy one they would be my first stop. My wife did relent and told me I could have a mini excavator but the only brand I could have was Tonka.

    • @TF856
      @TF856 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterLawton They do make fully functional model construction and farming equipment.
      They're made in Germany and you can buy them as a kit or pre-assembled but these are expensive models since they're fully functional. They cost thousands of dollars. They really do dig and do everything else that real construction and farm equipment does.
      They even have large get-togethers where they put a big pile of dirt in the middle of a convention hall and bring people with their remote control miniature tractors and trucks and farm implements and they put them to work doing their everyday chores and people come by in the hundreds and watch them operate. Some of those remote control models are big enough to lift an adult person. I saw one video a few years ago where several people got together with the remote control construction equipment and dug out a guy's basement for him. But it was funny to see the little tiny trucks and tractors about 1 to 2 ft long doing all this construction work for real and going up these ramps that were made out of boards to take the dirt outside. Look up RC excavator or RC construction equipment on TH-cam.

    The cabin is looking awesome! I started my cabin back when I was 18, it’s still a work in progress 😂 just a little trim and siding to finish. I have never showed it on my TH-cam channel mainly because people can be so critical and I do like to keep some aspects of my life off camera. Thanks for posting 👍 you have a awesome excavator there! I’m in the process of trying to buy one, but I’m not sure if I’m going gray market or newer used or new? Like you I never make crazy big purchases like this. Ps you mentioned possibly doing a collaboration, I’m up for it, we just need to figure out a good video idea. Take care

      @50Acres  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thank you Mike! I know how you feel about not showing it. Even when 99 out of 100 people are super positive, that 1 negative always sticks in your head! It looks like you have plenty of mechanical skills and the shop tools to keep an older machine going so I’d say go for it. I don’t have any place to work, and whenever I do, when I’m done, I’m usually out what I spent on parts plus whatever I tried to fix is still broken. Yea I’m not sure on the collab. I’ll try to think of something creative. I like stuff that fits the flow of the video and doesn’t seem forced.

    You made a very valid point about "mental health". Sometimes with all the work we need to get done, we just need to step back a second and go do something else. Only question - should the downhill wall be compacted (maybe run over) more and/or thicker. Firm believer in collecting as many different tools as possible. Having options is a great thing to have so if you haven't gotten the thumb yet I'd say definitely add it to the arsenal!

    I would definitely go for a thumb for the excavator they are so handy for grabbing things rocks trees etc. I also love the sounds machines make. I also really like how you explain the ideas you have and work with a purpose. I am also learning not to burn myself out on projects it can be hard.

    A bucket thumb is a force multiplier and you will wonder how you ever lived without one. A strong one made for rock and it will do fine for brush. Another consideration is that it stow flat against the arm so it won't be in the way when you don't need it.
    My Mom used to tell me "if you want three children, plan for two" and it applies to your pond. Ponds rarely are always full so dig at least a foot deeper than you want the depth of water. You also want to plan for sand under the liner and perhaps pea gravel to cover over the liner. Unless you have a stream fed pond with a constant outflow, dig it deeper.
    Thanks for another great video. Your progress is showing!

    • @50Acres
      @50Acres  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm definitely getting a thumb and another bucket, cant wait. Thanks for the advice on the pond, I think I will make sure Ive got some extra depth. I do have a small spring that I plan to feed it from. It's maybe 3/4 gallon per minute, it stops running late June through about now though.

    WOW, very impressive when you walked into the cabin and spanned the room...it's looking so fantastic...each thing you accomplish is getting you closer to being done. I remember when building our cabin, we thought it'd take forever but we kept plugging along and we impressed ourselves. You're doing a great job with it all....the pond is going to be a nice addition. Stay safe, be careful, take it easy and keep dry. NC here...
