Even when you read LOTR you don't get the sense of history of Celeborn and Galadriel. He was a prince of Doriath when he met Galadriel in the first age. Because the Dwarves destroyed Doriath, Celeborn still disliked the Dwarves. Next to Galadriel and Cirdan, he was the next oldest Elf in Middle Earth. Galadriel, on the other hand was more forgiving towards the Dwarves. She worked with the Dwarves in the 2nd age to help fight against Sauron during that time he made the One Ring. She was the only Elf left from the blessed realm and 2nd oldest Elf next to Cirdan, the Shipwright. When you read the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, you get a better sense of their history and how poignant their role was in Middle Earth. You also understand why she left Middle Earth. She had a great gift of insight and the ability to look into people's heart. I often wonder after the War when she came to Minas Tirith with Celeborn, Elrond and Arwen, what was her discussion like with Frodo and Sam. She saw Frodo's courage wavering and Sam's loyalty and steadfastness. Her actual gift to Sam was a small box containing earth from her gardens and a nut from a Mallorn Tree. Sam planted it when he got home and it quickly grew to be one of the most beloved trees this side of the Misty Mountains. The dirt from her garden he helped to restore the Shire from the harms of the Ruffians. She later complimented him for his work when she saw him before leaving Middle Earth. Jackson did a great job with the movies but to read all the material about the several milleniums of time is truly breathtaking. I suggest reading the Silmarillian, Hobbit and LOTR in that order. Once done, the end of the story takes on so much more meaning.
