ufff thanks for this man. i bought an agfa AC9000 action cam and it has the sony imx458 sensor. i was worried because indoor it had horrible video grain even with the lamp on. i guess it only makes quality videos outside during the day
The other restraint is the apertures of the lenses. For better low light performance with, e.g., a micro four third camera a fast lens would be used - that is a lens with an aperture of f/2 or less. however the lower the aperture the smaller the depth of field and means that less of the image will be in focus. Action cameras need a large depth of field as the action can occur at a range of distances within the scene, plus the fact that the lens can’t be focused. Smaller sensors have a larger depth of field than larger sensors so the action cameras manufacturers generally compromise with a fixed aperture of f/2.8 to get a large depth of field and enough light for normal use. I think that another problem is comparing footage they’ve taken against footage someone else has posted online. I don’t know about others but I generally don’t post the raw footage straight from the camera but will do a bit of colour correction, noise reduction, sharpening, lens distortion correction, stabilisation, etc in post as I feel a clip needs so the look of a low light shot might look better once colour corrected and denoised than in its raw format. The fastest lens on an action camera I have is f/2 on the SJCam SJ7 Star. 2.8 to 2 might not sound like a lot of difference but the f/2 aperture lets in twice the light of the f/2.8 aperture. Of course if I needed to take video in low light I’d still be better off using a Panasonic MFT with a manual M42 f/1.8 lens and a m42 to mft speed booster giving me a super fast lens. Or bite the bullet and buy a full frame camera with a fast lens.
If you need an action camera that is better in low light than others then Sony RX0 could be a good (and expensive) choice. It has a 1" sensor, which is a step up from others action cameras, but still not as big as MFT, APS-C or FF sensor in mirrorless / DSLR cameras.
Grate video man, I have just purchased akaso v50x and its good for outside, but in door is super bad when using 6 led 60w lights in my room and trying to record 4k it looks soo bad, just making your point. Take care
A lot of these action cameras can have the lens unscrewed, then take out the IR cut filter off the back of the lens and that will make it see in low light or if you add an IR light make it night vision.
Hi Andre. Nice explanation. You’re absolutely right ... use the right tools for the job. Just back from Menorca and after around 650 clips, my GoPro did a fandango and has died. Luckily, Lucy brought the Yi Lite so I could film the end of the holiday, so with the falling prices of some of these Action Cams, it might actually be good insurance to have a second (good) cheapo. With the tiny electronics inside, maybe they’re not as robust electronically.... maybe a big change in temperature finally drove my GoPro nutty!! I’m now waiting for the 8 for real! Or the Osmo if they actually sort the audio.
@@WORTHITORNOT I have a Osmo Action as my main,Osmo Pocket as my backup and CERASTES 4K as last resort....well,last resort is my cell phone lol But as you say....always good to have a backup
GoPro video looks just as bad in low light/dark shots. Only difference is you can adjust the ISO on the GoPro to compensate BUT you will still get some grainy footage.
ffriedl It may also depend on the way that the image gain staging works in the camera but in general, almost all small sensors don’t live up to a bigger one. My GoPro works better than my Yi Lite in low light and both have small sensors.
ffriedl : You have to realize that cell phones have been a leader in small camera imaging for a while now, like the iPhone 7 Plus ( released in 2016) could record true 4K video when 90% of Action cameras could not.
Just subscribed your videos seem very helpful. Any recommendations for a entry budget minded action camera to film sports and family vacations ect... ?
Trying to cram too many pixels in the space also is detrimental. Go Pros are only 12MP (13MP). Hey Andre, ever see Hardcore Henry? A feature shot entirely on Go Pro. It's pretty good, stars Sharlto Copley: th-cam.com/video/96EChBYVFhU/w-d-xo.html
@@WORTHITORNOT I hope you like action flix Andre. If you do you won't be disappointed. Strap in, it's a wild ride. Watch it.... then invite some mates over and watch it again 😉
Excellent explanation, as always.
Cheers!
love the 'do not disturb' sign on the door haha
Haha, that way my family knows if the door is closed, I'm editing and not to disturb me :)

Thank you… EXACTLY what I was looking for!
Thanks for watching
very informative, nice video. thumbs up!
Very informative video, and totally agree with you.

You can take the brand off, but I would recognize an sj5000x elite's inside anytime :)
Haha, this was not an SJCAM :)

The runcam night eagle pro 2 was a great B&W night vision camera until it was discontinued

Yes, m looking at the Foxeeer CAT 3 as a replacement
On that small action camera, is the ir filter on the sensor or infused in the lens?
The IR cut filter is on the back of the lens
bottom line is know your subject.... good video

Hey Ian, sorry to hear about the GoPro but yes always good to have a backup. Hope your trip was fantastic

what is go pro doing different than the others??? they have such good night time

Use Sony latest sensors to get good low light shooting, sensors that use in Xperia 1, apple, Huawei and others..,
But the sensor of the Huawei p30 pro is almost the same size and can handle lowlight surpriseling well! (?)

Depends on the budget, what resolution do you want to shoot in etc
smaller sensor is not great low light video
Exactly
