I was sleep on this cat till Outlook Festival last month. I was walking past the clearing heading to the Harbor, dude was slaying the set so I chilled for a bit. I love that smooth sexy DnB.
I see these days a lot of drum and bass djs don't really seem to be beat matching that much or touching the tempo (not criticising). I can understand this when using a laptop as you have visual aids such as a phase meter on traktor. can someone tell me how they do this with usbs on cdjs? I presume they are not using sync as they still touch the jog wheels occasionally, are they using a master bpm? and is there a visual beat counter on the cdjs to keep them in time? if someone could update me on current dj methods on cdjs then that would be cool!
Steven Andrews it's so fast to catch right tempo this way, it seems you are not adjusting tempo fader at all. and also this way you can catch tunes with same bpm right away. -captain bpm out
Ondrej Posolda oh right cool! any way you could explain how to use this trick? i DJ too, but i use traktor and i dont have much experience using only CDJS so would be cool to learn.
Steven Andrews this is not really time and place to explain properly, but the theory behind is this. See every dnb track is made on exact bpm. For example 174, 175 or 172. Almost never ever something like 173.455565645 or whatever. That means you can calculate how is exactly 1BPM difference translated to tempo in percentage. See every CDJ pretty nicely displays tempo % but the bpm counters are usually unreliable (unless you got traktor with correct grid marker on every single track... nice little hack isn't it?). And from experience i KNOW that 1BPM is translated exactly to 0.6%. So i go up to CDJ decks and see one track is playing at 3.00% tempo. i set the other track to the same tempo 3.00%, and if the other track needs to be sped up, i just add 0.6% up to 3.6% total (or lower the speed to 2.4% if the track needs to slowed). And i basically repeat (adding or substracting 0.6% on tempo fader) this step until the both tunes are synced by ear. No more guessing how much to add on the tempo fader (like, will it be the same speed if i add something like ____ this on the tempo? and shit). You will always go by 0.6% steps and you will hit the sync spot every single time by ear. i repeat, every single time! Eventually with some experience you will see right away, that 0.6% is not enough and the tune needs to be lowered or sped up by more and you just jump by 1.2% or even 1.8% and hit it on first try (practice makes perfect). And thats what all these pro assholes are doing. They just touch the motherfuckin tempo fader only once, and they are set, goodbye i'm off to paris. Just remember this scale like fucking 10 commandments: 0.0%, 0.6%, 1.2%, 1.8%, 2.4%, 3.0% ... and you get the idea. For the record, i also use traktor, but almost exclusively with dvs with CDJs and this way i learned to watch mixer, the decks and crowd and use my computer only for track selection, so in reality i reduced the time to watch computer and look like an asshole who reads emails all the time instead of DJing. 10/10 would recommend. Also i was not able to play on 3 or 4 decks before i learned and mastered this technique. If you wanna learn it on traktor and controller, you just hide your bpm counter and make only tempo visible (traktor displays it in X.x% nicely) and then practice and try out. For starters you can also make phase meter visible to visualy help you, but when you switch it off, you will be reliable on 100% on your ears and that sweet tempo % value. .... damn... turns out i went pretty deep and explained the whole thing. so.. have fun and stop by my Bassdrive.com show on monday, the prague connection (6-8pm UK time) and say hi ;) . - Blofeld
+Steven Andrews Yeah, I use the 0.6% trick as well, however on that level I think they can match by just listening, and ofcourse I think they 'know' the tracks. Shogun label has been known for their excellent dj skill and masterful productions.
+Ondrej Posolda The second track of the three is Rockwell - INeedU, and I guess the other two tunes are brand new Rockwell album tunes to release soon!

Steven Andrews he uses this +0.6% -0.6% tempo trick. every headliner who uses cdjs and or usb sticks uses it. I do as well.

Kiss a RUDEBOi dose-noise right down the hall

We don't fall
Even if we drop
We work hard
Ripping bars literally
Till we rise to the top
Prop up a junglist
