- This match is actually lowkey really fun? Serena is clearly not at her very best, she definitely struggled with the slow surface and mid-paced topspin and low slices of Pratt, but there are many fun rallies and Serena in particular comes to net a lot and hits some amazing passing shots. Really like this match, which surprised me!

Can we appreciate how gorgeous Serena's serve was even 22 years ago? The tossing arm and wrist are so loose and the body moves so seamlessly into the serve. Gives me joy.

Still excellent serving, but for me this motion is far worse than her motion from 2008 onward
@@bryanmartin5901 I disagree. I think her serve was more potent from 2008 like you say, but I can't say that the motion is much inferior here. She had definitely tinkered with it after the 1999 USO but it was still great. By Wimbledon 2000, the serve looked wonderful.
Although I will concede that I think Serena's best ever serving came much later in her career but her serve was always something to marvel at. With perhaps the exception of 2005-06 when her serving was definitely below par.

Big difference between early 2000 Serena and now is angles on ground strokes. She isn’t as creative in hitting angles anymore. I’m not sure if it is mostly due to the lower surface area on racquet because she switched to smaller head size? Hitting angles is definitely easier with a bigger head size compared to the smaller size she is using now.
Serena’s angles are still as creative and even smarter now. The smaller head size hasn’t really much of a difference because Serena has the technique and timing to hit any angle she wants at any moment, regardless of the head size.

@@chrisak49 And this was a transition year. Between the first 2 rounds we've seen, she did tons of serve and volleying. She's playing like Hingis, but with a better serve.
@@piper998877 I'm glad you noticed. She s/v a few times in R3 too. I found it interesting personally how often she did it too
@@JCole-fg3rr completely agree. let's not confuse creativity with inexperience LOL. LOL @ the person saying she plays like Hingis but with a better serve. serena played with tons more angles after 2001 and even more when she started working with patrick in 2012. like are we watching the same sport?
