      Johnny Rambles dirt and grass only last so long. This seems to show the dam was already saturated on the inside. I'd understand if it had been spilling over the top, but it looks like that's not the case.

      Hopefully you all know that isn’t a dam, whoever thought that was gonna hold isn’t logical. Dirt will not hold water in any class for a long time, should’ve been some sort of actual blocker in between the water and the dirt.

    • @wtxrailfan
      @wtxrailfan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Michigan's never had good roads because Michiganders have never wanted to pay for them. Same thing with these dams. The dam owner didn't want to pay for upgrades, and the property owners around the lakes didn't want to pay either. Nobody wanted to pay. Nobody wanted to take responsibility. Now all those property owners live on a mud canyon. The value of their properties just plummeted. But, hey, they really showed that they weren't paying for no stinking dam repairs.

    • @grantgarrod2232
      @grantgarrod2232 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, no, it's the last thing you want. Shrubs & trees sink roots deep into the earth & toward water, aka the reservoir side. The water, under tremendous pressure, will find these tiny breaches, & migrate along the roots, the soil will liquefy into mud and lose it's integrity, & the dam will fail. This happens even on small ponds that have an earthen bank dam. Only shallow-rooting ground cover, like grass, is planted to prevent surface erosion from precipitation. Fill any reservoir with an earthen dam well over capacity for an extended period, & this sort of failure is bound to happen sooner or later, especially if excessive rainfall is an additional factor.

    To all the know-it-alls commenting on here, most dams are made of earth. Tree roots weaken dams. The emergency spillway was inadequate, water should have never been allowed to top over the dam. That’s the only thing that caused it to fail. Tops of dams usually are kind of narrow, water is never meant to get that high. At the emergency spillway elevation, the dam is much wider. Dams are built taller than their intended water level to add strength to the structure. Rip-rap (large stones) do not add strength, they simply prevent erosion from wave action.
