is it just me or are all of these guys insanely good musicians ... in a tight as hell band .... ? its very hard to be this good and they make it all look so easy
Hard to say what sticks most in this tune. Noam’s pretty much on a shredding banjo solo the entire tune (reminds me of Carter’s drums on some DMB tunes). Chris playing drum fills on the mando at about 2:15. There is so much friggin rhythm in that right hand of his!! Fiddle solo is crazy! Gifted dudes, every one of them! Well done guys!
the punch brothers show that you dont need all that post production studio crap to sound good. this video is just as tight and just a clear as the album. true examples of how a band should sound and that you should listen to the other members and blend with them instead of recording everything separate and smashing it together. true musicians
Indeed.. though I have to say from standing in that room - these guys are so good, the mics might as well be 57s. They know how work together, use a space and blend! A rare skill these days, to be sure
Man you don't realize how fast this song is til you try to play (guitar) along with these guys, they are beasts! noticed Critter always makes it look so easy but you gotta have a loose wrist or something to keep up!
Crazy..it sounds just like the album. There are probably a handful of artists out there who can replicate their sound so perfectly and effortlessly. Raw talent right here
No, andersingram, it's not just you! Chris has surrounded himself with four absolute virtuosos! Just saw them last night at the El Rey in Hollywood....Great show!
Agreed! There is something to be said for the engineer here too, getting it to sound so great with just a few mics (granted they're 3K each!) but yes, this is way too rare today!
Joan, I think Clara is about a grown woman who as a child witnessed her father assault her mother, and her father is still living in her head. Is that how you interpret it? The tune is so beautiful, and the lyrics so fraught.
They recorded the album Punch like that. It was literally just them in front of the mic and when one was meant to be heard more than others, he would step forward. They are tight as butholes!
I keep seeing all these amazing things from WFUV but it was all before I came to this school! Very sad haha but it's cool to know at least that they were once on campus :)
Chris plays the mandolin like a guitar. His rhythm playing is just fantastic and it has such a wonderful effect on the music. If you watch him, he, with the guitar are the rhythm section. That is by far his greatest strength. He builds melody through harmony. I really enjoy his playing.
now that is a top comment and needed saying. It makes you wonder if people realise half the time whats going on with production and trickery etc.. Thankfully I do actually believe more and more people are developing a taste for 'real' live, feel, music with no frills except talent, and boy oh boy thats what you get here
Greatest band ever! nuf said. Your a sharp dresser too Chris. I toned it down from what my mom said. I didn't notice til she said something. actual lol.
post production audio (mixing and mastering) is meant to clean up a recording session that was not at it's fullest potential. I've always treated it as such. a great live engineer these guys have. kudos
it all depends on the engineer and the style of music being played. Certain styles of music are compressed and many fx are used but just because of this does not mean all work done in studios is crap. Most engineers don't like using fx when they don't need to, and it is shown in their recordings.
Exactly. Too many bands these days are only good because of things like auto tune. This is just plain, raw skill and talent that just can't be matched by the best auto tuning and post production frills!
Love the PB, and a tip of the cap to the sound engineers for this fine recording. Doncha just love those Neumann mics? Great artists behind the gear as well as in front. Thanks!
intro G-, verse II: G-, C-, Ebmaj7, G- :II C-, Ebmaj7, F, G-, II: G-, C-, Ebmaj7, G- :II C-, Ebmaj7, F, chorus II: Bb, D-7, C7, Ebmaj7 :II (this will get you to the middle instrumental which has more chords and subtleties than I can express in quickie chords)
Good mics, bad placement.. this could sound quite a bit better than it does. There's all sorts of phase cancellation happening here, especially on vox.
This song is the most technical display of *yearning* ever. Absolutely magical.
Well said. It's breathtaking.
is it just me or are all of these guys insanely good musicians ...
in a tight as hell band .... ?
its very hard to be this good and they make it all look so easy
Wow! Excellent dynamics on the condenser mics, and everybody sings!
It's real magic when you 'grow a band' like this......

Noam's percolatin'!
Fantastic version. The work of Paul Kowert in this band is overlooked. He is the glue and the soul of the Punch Brothers.
+Colorado Paul Not overlooked by me! Anyone with Edgar Meyer as a mentor is someone to keep an eye on. Totally agree.
I love this. I can't believe they manage to repeat it.
over and over
Love, love, love this song.

There’s more reverb on the album and that’s…basically the only difference. Unbelievable musicians.
Great song, makes me smile, goes with my sunny sunny day

That’s the irony-to be this precise you have to be relaxed! Always a challenge for me 😂😅🤦♂️
@@Ravelle17 True, that must be the secret! Man this song is so good.
god bless y'all...beautiful..I can't help of think of the towers...what a tribute..
Very cool Mic arrangement here. And of course an amazing performance by the Punch Brothers.
Literal perfection.
Crazy..it sounds just like the album. There are probably a handful of artists out there who can replicate their sound so perfectly and effortlessly. Raw talent right here
hearing this for the first time in years and so many emotions are flowing through me. so much love
These guys are geniouses!
No, andersingram, it's not just you! Chris has surrounded himself with four absolute virtuosos!
Just saw them last night at the El Rey in Hollywood....Great show!
Yes i agree, i saw Him when he was still with nickel creek, very talented bluegrass musicians, then again most are
aahh one of the greatest bands ever!
Amazing - just love these guys.
Love it!
Agreed! There is something to be said for the engineer here too, getting it to sound so great with just a few mics (granted they're 3K each!) but yes, this is way too rare today!
wow!...these guys are amazing...not long discovered them...loved Clara so much thought I'd hear more...This track is awesome too!
Clara is such a heartbreaker! “Your eyes are not a window, they’re a one-way mirror to my soul” 😭
Joan, I think Clara is about a grown woman who as a child witnessed her father assault her mother, and her father is still living in her head. Is that how you interpret it? The tune is so beautiful, and the lyrics so fraught.
@@Ravelle17 Nick, same question as I asked Joan above. What story do you hear in Clara?
Cuudoo ,ta kapela ,to jebaneee cudooo !!! Awesome 🙈

Very impressive.
Totally diggin' on this band right now.
Amazing!
so good.
Absolutely Braw!
Crank up the banjo!

oh my god Noam
Isn't it cool? They really know how to work their arrangements into any acoustic environment
Sweet!
Wow, musicians with actual talent and skill. That's unusal to find these days.
this is so Dope!!
I think the thing I love most about Noam Pikelny is that at the end of every song he looks totally, completely and absolutely bored.
Bored resting face haha
2:08 awesome! Love that part
good stuff...

badass
2:06…”my band kicks ass”
And 3:07 to the end, maybe best outro EVER!
Reminds me of the Genesis album - trick of the tail. I love this!...and I confess that country, especially bluegrass, really bothers me.
2:09 is one of the sexiest moments in music history
This is how it is done
the one the only

DELICIOUS!!! Yum yum yummy yum.
I still love Nickelcreek

the Music fan in me is shocked how amazing they are, but the woman in me is watching the speed of their fingers:s
New Yawk, New Yawk......snow on the Hudson indeed.
Fuuuuuck that Banjo riffing at 1:45. Holy shit.
Love the PB, and a tip of the cap to the sound engineers for this fine recording. Doncha just love those Neumann mics? Great artists behind the gear as well as in front. Thanks!
Haha yeah I think the same thing!
JESUS CHRIST said: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Seek JESUS CHRIST, seek Salvation, turn to Him !
Who let him in here?
“If I knew would you”…what’s the final lyric in that line at :47?
sounds like York. You York makes no sense anywhere except in this context, so I'm good with that.
Does anyone know where I could find the chords for this?! I need them so badly!
intro G-, verse II: G-, C-, Ebmaj7, G- :II C-, Ebmaj7, F, G-, II: G-, C-, Ebmaj7, G- :II C-, Ebmaj7, F, chorus II: Bb, D-7, C7, Ebmaj7 :II (this will get you to the middle instrumental which has more chords and subtleties than I can express in quickie chords)
Any luck? Lol
Is the Singer/mandolinist Chris Thile?
yes
Yes twitchie, it be Chris.
Ugh, Chris Thile! ;D 3
Where can I find a tab for the guitar part?
I wrote out some chords about 15 posts above
@@norfitz lol thanks man
looks like his right hand is hardly moving!
riptrippers?
I admire them so much
This was dated Mar 6, 2012. If this was dated Sept 28, 2021, the song title would be "New York City Sucks".....just sayin'............
you realize those microphones are worth more than a used car lol
But they only needed one!
Can I just like marry Christ Thile? PLEASE?
Critter kinda looks like a younger, thinner Stephen Fry...
Fat? Lolwut
Good mics, bad placement.. this could sound quite a bit better than it does. There's all sorts of phase cancellation happening here, especially on vox.
just can't get into their music--tried--but it just ain't there
