If I were to pick a single one over all the others, I'd say 1204, this one would probably be tied for my second pick with 1453.

I think that 1204 was intense because it was the first time it fell in 1000 years, while 1453 was intense because there would be no more Constantinople.

Great video. Everybody in Europe knows Charles Martel but very few know Leo the third. I believe as time passes and prejudices dissapear Europeans will see the eastern Roman Empire for what it was actually. Culturally It was the continuation of the Hellenistic world and politically of that of the Roman political tradition. A Christian Greco Roman state or the eastern part of the Western civilization.

Glad you liked it, it was a fasinating topic to research. I would say it is less a question of prejudice and more a one of knowledge. The ERe being a dead empire and so far removed from other coutnries like France or England it does not really feature much in public knowledge or even a slightly deeper knowledge.

That's a banger of a video! I know, from other Roman sources, that actually The Romans did not negotiate with the Bulgarians and when our armies came they first thought that we would join the Arabs, because Bulgaria was not a Christian state yet, but when they saw that we attacked the Caliphate cheers of joy came from the walls and people started chanting: "Christ has won, Christ has won!" Because they knew that the Caliphate was focked :)) Khan Tervel was later pronounced Saint Trivelius - the savior of Europe by both The Catholic and The Orthodox Church. I know the Bulgarians killed like between 40 and 60 thousand men in battle... No wonder then didn't come back for 7 centuries. And no wonder why they slaughtered us like animals when the Ottomans crushed us... They wanted us to have the same fear from them for 7 centuries, as they did towards us. Some sources say that from hunger the Caliphate army ate even stones... doubt that's true, but imagine what a horrible picture it was, if someone wrote that... 11:19, nice map, someone bothered to put the Frank Kingdom there, while Bulgaria - one of main players at the time and the oldest country in Europe is not even there. Solid work :)))

I'm french and in our country ,we have an other view about the islamic invasion of Europe because Charles Martel is considered like the savior of Europe whereas the battle wasn't really important .There was only razzia in South France .Glad to see videos where we can study others histories about the same evenement but with a different location and how important was this battle and how Islam is seen in european countries .In this case, I guess there is a major difference between France and Bulgaria for example.

Indeed. I am glad I could give a good look at what was happening in Eastern Europe at this time. The idea with the end part was to illustrate how this siege fitted into the wider context, history does not happen in a vacuum as they say. Nice comment.

Dear French guy. The campaign in south France was almost 20 years later then the siege of Constantinople and the Arabic army was 10 times less. The main Battle of Europe was this one. After the perfect military operation led by saint Terbelis Arabs never return back.
Try to find out more about saint Terbelis. Until 18 century he was famous as a saver of Europe.

@@chipil0 Yeah... you know.. those fair, honest, tolerant Western Europeans, who love everyone, except the actual guys who literally saved their asses. After all, they are all about fairness and democracy, except, when faking history :) ;) There is a saying that goes: "History is written by the winners." Guess the gratitude was leaving us and the Eastern Empire alone against the Ottomans and after we got crushed erasing everything our nation did. After that sent troops to fight with the Ottomans against the Russian Empire to prevent Bulgaria from ever getting freed at all. The pathetic thing is that most of our idiotic nation actually keeps going towards the people who literally not only didn't give a single f*ck about them, but tried in some degree to help in the destruction of our nationality. Not only that, we give them 96%-97% of our gold now. For this level of pettiness and stupidity we are paying now, and a greater cost will be paid later, when we loose half, if not all of our territory again. If shit hits the fan they will throw us to the wolves without batting an eyelash, 7 centuries of slavery were not enough, hold on to your seat, brother, more is coming. Виж накрая на видеото, че картата даже не показва България. Пише "Авари". За какво говорим. Жив и здрав!

Until 1204 Constantinople was the bastion of Christendom - 4th Crusade is a shame in European civilization.
Leo III was a formidable general and greatly underrated.
They prefer to talk of Charles Martel a small king who won one battle that "saved Europe" - Byzantines fought a hundred battles and by early 10th century they humiliated the invincible caliphate.

Thank you, for this. It was a fight for Europe. For centuries Romanland (Byzantium) was the bulwark that kept Asia from invading Europe. When Romanity fell, Islam reached the center of Europe. After 1453 scholars from Constantinople New Rome fled to Italy, mainly Venice. Thus the Renaissance started.
