I have pics of an E30 with an RB25DET conversion . He didn't even have to change the engine mounts...unbelievable . By the way a GTIR is AWD not 4WD , there is a difference .

It's a shame they never sold a 2 door version of the 1600/510 in Australia.

I'm a datsun fan but I'm unimpressed with these 1/4 mile times for the SR20 and FJ20. In the 90's I had a 1600 with a L18 that run 14.4 with DCOE45 webers, no turbo. A mate had a stripped down 1600 with a L20, DCOE45's, and run 13.8, again no turbo. Later I fitted a L18 with a TO4 blowing into twin SU's, 13.5 quarter. A lot to be said for the old L series engines.

sounds great, but blow-thru setups won't work with variable-venturi carbs like hitachi SU-type carbs . they need engine-side vacuum to operate the one moving part that modulates their fuel-metering system. if you just have to blow a T04B or the like into an L-series motor, you would want to use a box blowing one or more twin-choke carburetors. these carbs use air flow and throttle position to meter fuel. either setup you mentioned would be smoked by a stroked L21/22B, everything else being the same. you just can't beat the torque and compression boost you get from stroking, and when it becomes a game of turbos and torque, who needs a full-house crank, anyway?

Incorrect. SU's use the pressure difference between the inlet and butterfly sides of the piston to govern piston height. Its a closed system, above the piston is ducted to the downward side, and below the piston is ducted to the air cleaner side. The air cleaner side sees boost pressure. So we still see a pressure difference and the piston works as normal. The oil damper must be in place or its all goes weird. also need to boost modulate the fuel supply and feed boost pressure to the float bowl. All carbies are the same, they only need to see a pressure difference between the in and out to work. You can have 10 pounds boost going into the carb, and 9 pounds in the inlet manifold, that one pound difference will be all the carb needs to work correctly. SU's work well in a blow through system, I drove it like that as a street car for 2 years. Throttle response was great, I was getting 18 pounds boost and back then the car was untouchable on the street. Another variable venturi carb I later used was a varijet, a few holes to seal, but once sorted was a very smooth carbi.

you can't blow into SU-type carbs- they have to be naturally aspirated. nice try...

weakest link in the e30 is the cv in the axles but i think it a good thing. easy to replace and cheaper then a diff or box.

You would think the weakest link was the commo clutch but that didnt fail. Amazing!
