  • Words and music by Kate Wolf. A 'lost' song of Kate's that is only found in the two CD anthology titled "Weaver of Visions." According to biographical information in the accompanying booklet, she wrote it in memory of a minstrel who recorded his original songs on a tape recorder when he visited her home and would then disappear for long periods of time.
The minstrel to my side has come and stirs old memories
Like the winds of time I remember well his haunting melodies
It seems like I've been thinking too much of myself
For a country lady's heart grows tired and calls it something else
Won't you play that tune that held me in those days
When I was singing to myself and you had gone away
You were younger then with the morning in your eyes
And a little bit of madness which I too recognized
How you would knock upon my door and I would let you in
We had foggy San Francisco nights
There was a warm Sonoma wind
Won't you play that tune that held me in those days
When I was singing to myself and you had gone away
They ask me if I know you now
I don't know what to say
It's been so many years though it seems like yesterday
But I remember clearly the magic in your songs
Which held me till I could not speak
    Those hours before the dawn
So here we sit together now like strangers and like friends
And maybe what seems new tonight is how the story ends
You can't cry the rain away, you don't have to try
I heard you say that long ago, and never asked you why
Won't you play that tune that held me in those days
When I was singing to myself and you had gone away
Won't you play that tune that held me in those days
When I was singing to myself and you had gone away
