Never heard of Kate Wolf until about 2016, but about the same year she published this song was heading west from Prescott to LA and saw the small sign on the highway pointing up the hill. All it said was "Ghost Town" so out curiosity turned right and drove up to check it out. Was struck by the beauty of the location and the sadness of what the once-thriving town had become. Glad to know some still live there and can easily imagine, as Kate said, once you live there you'll never really go. Something about it stayed with me all these years and was floored when I first heard Kate sing this beautiful song about my favorite old 'ghost town', Old Jerome.

Kate Wolf passed away far too young in 1986, leaving us with many of her musical treasures, in no small part thanks to her family and former bandmates. I still remember announcing the sad news of her death on my radio program at WBAA.

She don't have to shout out loud to voice her message . That is beauty of art . Thanks Kate , may you rest in peace .

Another one by Kate I'd not yet heard. Jerome was a town worth seeing, btw. 2015, in my backyard and finally got there. We continue push on to see sights we've yet to see in my beautiful state. Retirement is grand. AZ Gold.
Voting for a new gov in 2026. 🇱🇷

Great Song. Great Pictures. Living just over the hill in Prescott, I have had the privilege of performing this song on the crooked stairs of rough cut stone underneath young Ailanthus Trees. It is in my set of songs I perform at folk festivals around Arizona. Such a Peaceful place. Thanks for preserving this great lady's work.

There are so many songs to discover and so much to like about Kate Wolf's music. Some recommendations are "Close to You", "Leggett Serenade", "Give Yourself To Love", "Cornflower Blue", "Amazed To Find", "All He Ever Saw Was You", "Harmony", "Streets of Calgary" and many more too numerous to list.

Wonderlijk dat ik deze fantastische artieste in de jaren zeventig volledig heb gemist. Dankzij veel op TH-cam in de afgelopen Corona periode heb ik haar gelukkig nu wel ontdekt. Blij mee!

Thanks for posting this, it's nice. I liked the pictures of Jerome, I live nearby. It is a pretty little old Western town and the people are nice too, many are artists and musicians. Kate's music is a gift to all of us. In ancient Greece, gods were immortal , men were not. A man could become immortal. If he performed great deeds, they could be told and retold in songs and stories. As long as the stories and the songs continued, they would live.

I love your comment. Thanks for posting it. I've uploaded many of Kate's songs. A relatively unknown one is titled "Although I've Gone Away," recorded in 1981. The lyrics however easily lead one to imagine it was her very last song.

I discovered Kate back when I only played harmonica then I listened to the metaphors amongst the melody and I was a Wolfie …it’s the Kate version of a Deadhead as I followed the ripples she fluttered into
my soul . Last year I took up the guitar and my fingers are calloused enough to glide through Old Jerome
I first got all her vinyl I could find then the interview A love story wallah Cleopatra stories .

Incredible. Kate Wolf is up there on the top with Eva Cassidy, Leonard Cohen, Emmylou Harris and Dylan.

That's for sure. When I heard, in 1987, that she was referred to as the "late Kate Wolf" I could not believe it.

Another great Kate Wolf song. I live on the other side of Mingus Mtn. from Jerome. It's now a little art community, tourist destination. It reminds me of Sausalito but instead of looking out over San Francisco Bay it looks out over the Verde Valley and Sedona in the distance.
Kudos on the nice photo montage.

One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Remember being in Jerome a few times and emailing with Katie Lee who lived there though never met her. Just received Kate Wolf's album The WInd Blows Wild yesterday, released after she had passed in 1986. That she wrote this after meeting Katie Lee is amazing. Kate Wolf is a treasure in music and the universe.

Had a friend whose grandfather had mined copper in Jerome. Used to drive up from Phoenix for a day of peace. If you find an old house key in the graveyard, it might be one I threw away there.

This is truly a wonderful song, but I am curious as to when it was written. Was Jerome, by that time, already rediscovered and "coming back" or was it still in serious decline?

According to www.katewolf.com/lyrics, the song was published in 1983. The town's low point was in the late fifties when its population dropped to about 100. It started to slowly come back in the 1960s by appealing to tourists. According to the demographics in Jerome's Wikipedia article, the town's population when this song was published was in the low 400s. Today it is about 540. Its economy is probably about 99% tourism: winery tasting rooms, gift shops, galleries, hotels and bed and breakfasts, and cafes and coffee shops.
We were there just last week. Had lots of fun. The museum at Jerome State Park is fantastic.
