    I caught my first pike on a lure just like this (in the UK), I made it from a stainless steel teaspoon. I drew small blue dots on one side with a permanent marker pen and a bigger dot to look like an eye. It also caught a large perch. Good creative thing to do and satisfying to catch fish on a lure you've made yourself

    I've used nail polish to repaint plugs for years. (People always look at me strange when I buy it - I'm a 6'7", 225 pound guy.) From personal experience, nail polish with a coat or 2 of clear over the top is the best finish you can give a lure. One particular of these custom-painted hot & tots has been my best color on Saginaw Bay for the past 3-4 years, has caught probably a few hundred walleye, and it still looks brand new. Holds up much better than whatever paint they use at the factory.

    I've been using spoons to make lures for a while and they work great.
    Your advice on checking for movement before painting is right on.

    Great video! I found a few of our more beat up spoons and tried this. I discovered that with some spoons the handle can also be used to make a longer, narrower spoon, a jigging spoon, or even a small spinner blade, if the metal is thin enough. Some of the of the spoons I made from handles almost look like store bought spoons.

    Great idea! Im stoked about doing the same, only instead of painting dots, i thought of a thin coat of clear glue with a dusting of silver and blue metallic flake

    Great video! I would suggest a bigger hook for that big of a spoon because when the fish bite, the size of the spoon compared to the size of the hook will block the hook from digging into the fish. From my experience a layer of clear coat on a painted lure protects it from chipping so you dont have to repaint the lure

    • @GreatCoveAdventures
      @GreatCoveAdventures  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reid Wasankari Your suggestion is a good one. After a lost a couple of bass on it, I increased the hook size.

    Hammering them to give them more of an S shape should help the situation. It can take some experimenting to get it right. Even so, it will be heavier than ordinary spoon lures and create a little more drag, but you should be able to fix the spin.

  • @GreatCoveAdventures
    @GreatCoveAdventures  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you can get the spoon to flutter or wobble (as opposed to spinning), then you don't want or need a swivel. However, some of the spoons I've made are stubborn and want to spin. You can still catch fish with them, but they'll twist your line up quickly without a swivel. Even with a swivel they can twist it up some.

    I dont know if you know this, but the handle of the spoon also makes a perfectly good lure, that imitates a small fish

  • @stampy2k
    @stampy2k 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool video, although just a suggestion as far as bending the spoon curve:
    Get a piece of wood and pound on that to bend the spoon's shape rather than banging on the spoon itself. By using a piece of wood you should be able to make the curve more uniform.
    If you tried this already or someone else said it my bad, although it should make things more uniform.
    Thanks again for the post

  • @GreatCoveAdventures
    @GreatCoveAdventures  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't caught anything on this lure, but that's because I only had it in the water once in order to test the movement. My fishing last season was all for catfish and panfish, neither of which call for a lure of this type.

  • @antoncolbo
    @antoncolbo 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dress up my lures with nail polish, but I also sprinkle on a coating of "glitter" after I apply the nail polish. Easy to add some extra silver to just half for a realistic look.

    if you guys like jigging for large fish , try getting old scrap stainless steel chairs or furniture, cut the tube into say 4 or 5 inch or bigger pieces flat one end round of like a tyre lever, drill ends place on a wire ring for treble hook , top up inside the jig with moulten lead, leaving about inch from the top, once cooled flatten top round of like a tyre lever shape drill hole for swivel and ring , you can slighty bend into s shape or you can do this before pouring in the lead.. once holes both ends and rings on you can decorate with a swivel and hook ..saves paying hundreds dollers or pounds out for bass or shark or cod jigs,,,,ive also used old wind chimes for this purpose also ..good fishing and hunting guys.....

    Most people know that but it is easier just to buy one. But if you make your own it is great when you catch a fish on your home made lure! I make nearly all of my own ,. But I am still trying to to catch a dose of the crabs!! I have given up trying to catch fish. Tesco`s is the best place to get fish. ( Sorry I have just drunk a bottle of Whisky)

    i also go to , local shops find flat shell necklaces etc and make lures from those, also if you want to make good self cocking floats get the welders jig copper or brass ones make say , a round balsa wood dowel to shape of a float, say 3 inches in height once shaped, get a piece of the jig like a sparkler metal handle , and make about four or five inches push about inch in base of the balsa float, and superglue it in once hole is done, paint cover with yaght varnish and enjoy put a little rubber ring on the base part , but cut of a hook end and push that into top or side of float , superglue and thread line through that...happy hunting guys...test floats for self cocking before super glueing in , push up and down in base of float , to get just right ...

  • @61diemai
    @61diemai 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've made quite a few of such table spoon lures before , great that you're mentioning to decrease the spoon's cupping to enhance it's wobble .
    I even took it one step further and ground material off the sides of the spoon to achieve a so-called "shoehorn" and also an oblong shape , never cut off the handle at that stage to have a good grip on the workpiece , also using the handles for smaller trout spoons . If interested , check my channel , some vids about spoons there , greetz , 61diemai

    ive been making lures like this since i was about 8 yrs old im now in my late 50s, brillilaint idea also like mark s ..says i used the handles , once holes are drilled on the handles , bend into a slight s shape not to deep of an s bend ,,put one end in a vice grip , pull or bend slightly down and turn around do same with the other end but going different direction, so its a slight s shape put on rings hooks etc , this the water hits the sides making it wobble ..good hunting ..also check out bottle cap lures you will love em on you tube....

    • @GreatCoveAdventures
      @GreatCoveAdventures  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are exactly right. I could not find larger hooks locally, so I went with some I knew were a bit too small. I guess it was wishful thinking, because I missed the hook-set on several smallmouth bass last spring using this spoon. Moving to a larger hook corrected the problem - and then I snagged it on a rock and lost the lure. Thanks for the comment!

      I have made a couple more of them, but haven't got a chance to try them yet. I'm not a good person to ask about color - I've not fished for bass and pike enough to become knowledgeable on the details - I just toss something out there and hope a fish is hungry. :)
