    its a testament to you guys and to the shipwrights who built these boats in the ol days. Small boat shops in the days of old are all-the-more impressive when you watch this progression and realize how hard it is. Dont burn out!

    I've been watching since that first tree. It's been a bleak four years in many ways and your project has given me something positive to look forward to every week. I like to think of you guys as real Americans and that your country will eventually reflect the virtues that I see in you. Thanks for sharing a truly epic project with us. Best to you in 2020.

    a family up our way used to rough out soft wood bracket stock, they went into the swampy estuary and worked on the enormous yellow cedar stumps left by the springboard loggers, they where heavily buttressed 8 foot thick at cut line and 16- 20 foot at base, about 16 feet high. they used stumping powder to blow the muck away then hand saw/axe to cut all buttress roots, then they split out the buttresses and adzed them clean to about 10 inches
    then they hand packed the balks out to the train line up to 5 miles away. they stacked them for pick up and were paid a dollar a buttress. (1931) they did two or three stumps per week cut and stacked. the brackets were used for fish boat construction in Vancouver's coal harbor. There were 5 sons involved and they all lived well into their 90s

    PRO TIP .... Dig out around the root ball first. Then, use the hoe to push over the tree, using the weight of the tree when pushing to unearth the roots. Best method when dealing with large tap roots that are under the middle of the tree.

      Pro tip, learn what kind of tree has what kind of root system. Deciduous trees DON'T have tap roots. They have broad, horizontal root systems. Coniferous trees have tap roots, not deciduous. Knocking a tree down with the root attached is fine unless the roots are woven around in the roots of close trees so trying to play root ball games with those takes massively more time than just cutting the tree down in the first place and then worrying about the stump.
      So, obviously there are a lot of levels of "pros" when their supposed "tips" are completely useless, right? Apparently, in some places, "pro" is a pretty low bar.

    • @T5RABBIT
      @T5RABBIT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      georgianbents I use a method that works. Low bar is you and your bad comments. If you are a pro, then you have just brought the bar down to lower than a tap root.

    Heavily forked open grown oak is best for your knees. Stumps are not so good as they tend to have stones and other crud included into the timber. Carefully fell your forked oak onto a pile of brash so you don't split the fork when you're felling. Good luck!

      Sean have you seen the restoration of Western flyer ? Steinbeck's old boat is being re done in Washington by a school up there, much larger, and different construction, but the team is moving along a lot faster as well.. though they did source white oak from kentucky via horse gang , purple heart was purchased for her keel.. guess west coast builds are different.. either way have a look.. might be a good filler between episodes ..

    Such a beautiful farm ! The lamas remind me or the Springfield (VT) ag fair, when an old retired dairy farmer (who claims he joined the Army in 1942 so "he could have a vacation") was asked what he thought about these lamas? He just kind of winced, looked pained ----- still a dry humored comedian - which good Vermont farmers need to be.

    All the best wishes to everyone! It's funny to see so much snow over there, here in the Netherlands we have one of the warmest winters ever. Even some of the trees are out of sync, because some of them are already growing new buds while that shouldn't be happening in the middle of the winter. Love the channel and the project, folks. Both for the boatbuilding and the woodworking. What I DON’T come to your channel for is hunting. How about you focus on the project and leave out the killing you do in your spare time? There are about a billion You Tube channels people can go to if they want to watch (or hear people talk about) humans killing animals. Listen, I get that you want to add depth and value to Steve & Alix’s “story” by sharing more of their lives beyond boatbuilding. If that involves baseball cards or needlepoint or bonsai trees or ANYTHING that doesn’t involve killing animals, I’m all for it.

    • @idontthinkso666
      @idontthinkso666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmmartti Is there anything wrong with killing animals? I’m glad you ask the question and don’t jump in with justifications. I would say this in response-why don’t you put yourself in the place of the animal(s) to answer that question? That is, who has a right to kill you?

    • @idontthinkso666
      @idontthinkso666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmmartti I think we can all agree that death, whether under the wheels of a car or by a hunter’s bullet, is a pretty awful thing. There’s really no debate about that. I would like people to reconsider recreational killing. I mean, just think about that for a moment-killing for fun. Killing for pleasure. There is nothing nuanced about that.
      We are not talking about self-defense or survival. We are talking about killing defenseless animals in one's spare time for fun. I came to Acorn to Arabella because I enjoyed the boatbuilding and the woodworking, not because I wanted to watch people hunt & kill animals.

    Hanging planks is going to be tricky four or five courses from now, as they reach the limits of your reach and the curve of the hull provides little support from the plank below. Maybe you’ll be into lighter cedar planks by then?

    • @davidc6510
      @davidc6510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The guys would much rather have been using cedar for the planking by now but when they did an inventory of their cedar plank stock they did not think there was enough board feet to plank the entire hull. So they they decided to use oak for a few more planks - harder to plank but stronger and a little heavier down below the water line.

    I live in Alaska and we haven’t had a snow like that yet this winter! Oh, and it’s -10f right now.

    You didn't see any wooden boats at the boat show because it is an obsolete material for yachts. It may be "romantic" but it is not practical, because of the constant maintenance required and the fact that a boat builder could not build a wooden boat and offer it at a price that competes with his fiberglass competitors.

    Just a fun fact: The Eiffel tower lights at night are copyrighted under french law, and in theory might cause a takedown or demonetization or other such actions. Unlit eiffeltower at day is OK, the copyright on Eiffel tower itself has expired, but the light "art" installation on it is still current copyright. the glass pyramid at Louvre is copyrighted too and filming/photographing it is illegal, especially for commercial purposes.
    I know, It's weird, but then again, the french are weird.
