Dude, I chased that storm too. I ended up catching the Barkhamsted Reservoir tornado. My video on twitter went viral. The NWS in albany used it to determine that the tornado that hit winsted came down again over the reservoir in my video. One of the best days of my life!.
Ethcon1 yup! I came from the south then blasted west towards winsted. Never got to winsted. Intercepted the storm over the barkhamsted reservoir. Missed the hail core thank god. Drove through the aftermath of the hail on my way back and there was literally inches of it. Golf balls and bigger.
IKR! I was at school after class for some reason and the tornado wasn't bad but it still was pretty effective. My school is in Simsbury. Thx to Mr. Dubois who had to stand outside in the middle of the tornado to help people get to their cars and make sure their safe.
It was such a nice day at school and oh no guess what my teachers and principal got a tornado warning....I had my parents call me and tell them I was in the school basement oh and honey that basement is huge
That's awesome! When I was young, I too was obsessed with tornadoes and wanted to storm chase. Here I am today as a college student majoring in Engineering, and on the side I follow my passion of weather by chasing storms! I'm hoping to combine the two one day. Follow your dreams!
Ethcon1 this storm is how I got back into tornadoes and natural disasters. (I was into weather when I was from a baby to about 6) Although I am a little paranoid about storms now
Used to live in CT, moved back after the storm. I don’t understand how a tornado happened in CT. And I never seen suck destruction I guess since Hurricane Sandy.
I was in North Granby when this storm happened. we got tennis ball hail in my neighborhood specifically which totaled my car, followed by the still rotating ground drafts from the barkhamsted tornado. fun times. my entire neighborhood had to get new roofs and new siding.
I am from western NY along the PA border. You don't really expect a lot of twisters in the northeast, especially in mountain terrain, but they happen! I found out recently that NY gets the second most tornadoes out of the northeast states, with PA getting near double the average. When I was a kid I saw a tornado tear down the center of Cayuga lake. Some have told me the proper title for that sort is "steam devil". My family living further north where the state flattens out had a barn roof torn off by an F1, and of course back in the 80's (I believe) the Hudson valley saw an F4! Extremely rare in Appalachian country.
I live in Hunterdon County New Jersey. I remember the storm. Disappointing for me, it just got very dark and it just poured. There was no strong winds or hail. Unfortunately I also could not chase the storm because I had a band concert at school and my grandmother was going to Germany. I cannot wait for the next severe storm to come to the Northeast. I have all summer to chase storms

Was under tornado warning during this time. Our condo doesn't have a basement that we can readily access (it was outside on the opposite end and we didn't want to risk it) so I was just a nervous wreck in the most cramped room in the house
I have video of of tennis ball and golf ball size hail as well as 2 tiny, weak satellite tornadoes literally in my front yard in granby. Still working on a video for it though

Yeah, we were looking to position in Winsted as well, but ended up in Hartland instead.

I remember the one in 1989- I was at work that afternoon.One went down the highway in back of the nursing home in Waterbury I worked at.

I was in Fairfield county CT when this came through. I will never forget the destruction it left after just minutes.
Those hills are reminiscent of Connecticut, the Boring green ones that are gradual

Interesting today is may 15th and we’re gonna have probably tornados today in central ma it will probably be like this
