    A Spear and shield is also really good. You can throw your bonded spear and call it back after you throw it. Instead of using shillelagh, you use true strike. You keep a short sword and a dagger as secondary weapons. You take the piercer feat as it works with all three weapons as well as 95% of ranged weapons.

      @J.sh_CDN As a DM, I would that shield business is say that's a bad faith interpretation of the rule. A shield is armor and has no damage type RAW. Even the Shield Master feat makes no mention of bludgeoning damage.
      You proposed Crusher Polearm on spear could work but some DMs might not allow it.

    • @J.sh_CDN

      @dragoninthewest1 I meant using the Shieldmaster Bonus action push ability, not using your shield as an improvised weapon... which perhaps could still work with the Duel Wielder Feat.... but still seems bad faith.

  • @DnDDeepDive
    @DnDDeepDive  หลายเดือนก่อน +179

    Let's do an Errata! There is an issue with Shillelagh and a shield: Shillelagh requires you to be holding the staff, and also has both somatic AND material components. This means that, RAW, if you're also holding a shield, you probably can't cast the spell on your stick, EVEN with War Caster. And unfortunately, it takes an action to don a shield, so if you cast the spell first, then get your shield out, that's your whole first round. I think that's the best thing we can do if our DM is super strict. That said, I have to believe that most would allow you to, say, cast the spell then draw your staff, even if you're not *holding* the weapon when you cast it, or, if you've got War Caster, let you cast it with hands full, even though there's a material component, or that, since you've War Bonded your staff, that's good enough, or, heck, put the staff in the hand that's got the shield strapped to it - maybe you've got a couple fingers free. And of course, there's always the "I'm just always walking around casting Shillelagh and then donning my shield" crowd. Anyways, just make sure you talk this one over with your DM before you play, otherwise you might lose your first round of combat in setup. ALSO! I say there's no size restriction to the Hill Giant's tumble, but there is: large or smaller. Fortunately, the topple weapon mastery *doesn't* have a size restriction, though it does allow for a save.

    • @yurirobin
      @yurirobin หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      Well, if your DM is strict about the rules, you could cast shillelagh, don the shield, wait 5 rounds, doff the shield, and repeat while walking. That way you probably will have your shield and shillelagh going when the battle starts.
      Or pick a druid level and your stick is your druidic focus.

    One underrated 2024 Cantrip is Blade Ward. -1d4 to any attack rolls made against you. It’s basically Bane that requires no save. Yeah it’s concentration but it’s a cantrip. And it’s better than shield of faith because on average is a +2.5 AC instead of 2.

      @tawektawek3838 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Shield of Faith lasts 10 minutes instead of 1 and can be cast on an ally up to 60ft away instead of just on Self. Its versatility makes up for the .5 lower AC buff.

    Another thought: Tactical Shift has a really nice synergy with Booming Blade. Hit a target with BB, then use Tactical Shift to move away without taking an opportunity attack, provoking the target to chase. It’s a nice replacement for the old Mobile feat.

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Fair but not as reliable since it's locked behind Second Wind and bonus action which will be (usually) eaten by Polearm Master. Plus redundant once you hit 9th level and gain Tactical Master, meaning you can Push instead of Topple with your staff, better if you manage to light them up and apply Slow, Topple, and Push on a single target + Booming Blade - something you can do every turn.

    • @DukeTrout
      @DukeTrout 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Excellent point. Especially with Topple, since it means the opponent has to choose between taking disadvantage on attacks/advantage against while prone or to get up from prone and take the BB extra damage. I’m not sure I’d Push them even. Having a toppled enemy within melee is better than having one 10’ away, especially with Sentinel.

    I gotta say, an examination of how to take a single class to 20 is infinitely more interesting to me than a multi-class optimised fest. My games lean more into the roleplay side of things over crunchy numbers so the class identity is more important to me than 'does good numbers'.
    As much as I love this channel, and I know 'optimised numbers' is kind of your thing, as soon as you say 'then we take a dip into X' is the point when I switch the video off as the guide is no longer relevant to me.
    I would love to see a guide to optimise each of the core 2024 classes all the way to 20 with no multiclassing !!! That would be very interesting to me.

    Whenever I get the chance to make a new character, this is what I'm doing, only much more polished! I'm going to flavor my Shillelagh to make a weapon head appear on the end of the quarterstaff during combat. For example, if I knock them down, the head appears as a flanged mace when I sweep the leg, and the follow up attack when they're prone can turn into a spear strike straight down, or something along those lines. I think it really captures the idea of a Fighter who uses magic, and I'm SO very glad the original Spellsword class can finally feel good to play. Cheers, Colby

    I got a Beastmaster goliath running at the moment, using shillelagh on a club and a nick offhand weapon. Since it is a magic item-heavy setting, we finally got gauntlets of ogre power and the +1 moon sickle (we retroactivelly applied nick there). it's not at all optimal but great fun. But now I'm thinking of a shield approach. :D
    Also, for the constant use of cantrips, at our table we do the d10 roll, but only for exploration scenes, not dialogues and we skew the results to be always in our favor (roll a 1 and it means it has been one round, roll a 9 and it means you have 9 rounds left; of course it means we always end up rolling fives).

    I'm pretty sure because of the wording, if you multiclassed into Bladesinger, you'd not be able to use Fighter extra attack, but you could still use Bladesinger extra attack. As War Magic is not connected to extra attack and just says "when you take the attack action" whereas Bladesinger's "replace an attack with a Cantrip" is directly attached to their extra attack feature. If a DM allows it, awesome, but I think RAW it would be a mainly Wizard build because of that

You'll be a bit less durable earlier on, sure, but your damage would be the same and your spells would be more effective overall.

    You can do almost the same build with a valor bard dipped with fighter. It's probably better to be strenght based to get almost unlimited access to toppling and pushing weapon but later you could use true strike to wield a strenght weapon using you spellcasting ability. You can start playing baseball with ememies from the 4th level (1 fighter/3 valor bard) using a warhammer to push enemies in the CoD damage. You lose action surge until you get more levels (probably around the 13/14th level) but you can start playing around cloud of daggers much earlier and get access to better spells much earlier. Both have pros and cons but you can basically play them the same

      I 100% agree! I wish there was a little more of that modularity in modern DnD. Not everything has to be modular, but when a subclass is saying "you're a fighter/rogue/monk who uses spells", it should have a feature that allows you to choose between Int/Wis/Cha paired with their spell lists of the Wizard/Druid/Bard (or sorcerer). And they did add some in 2024, like the cleric where you can either choose armor or improve damage of cantrips or something like that.

    Excellent video as always. For the Eldritch Knight i think a strength based two weapon fighter using shillelagh and a scimitar taking advantage of the grab a weapon stow a weapon during an attack is how i would go take dragonborn as for the breathweapon that can be swapped for an attack so at lvl 5 you have a spell like effect keeping in line with the gish feel if needed and then at level 7 use shadow blade instead of shillelagh when you have the spell slots . This allows you to throw the blade during your last attack on a turn which will free up a hand to keep sheild as an option probably won't do the same damage but i think it'd be worth it

    Some higher level shenanigans with an INT build and Booming Blade, War Caster, Wrathful Smite from Shadow Touched, or Dissonant Whispers from Fey Touched.
    Level 7 - 17: Attack with Booming Blade, bonus action Wrathful Smite, opportunity attack with Booming Blade if you landed the Freightened status.
    Level 18+, which I realize is beyond where you go with your videos: Booming Blade into Dissonant Whispers into an opportunity attack during your turn.

    I'm using a Trident with my EK and focusing more on the defensive/party protect and support aspect, and it lets me have a nice in-combat use for War Bond. I can YEET the Trident while running into melee to get a ranged Topple check, and then just bamf it back to my hand as I get there, which would allow the Charger feat attack to enjoy the advantage on the bigger hit. It's also very nice for flying enemies to shoot them down and then get on top of them.

    I know the world tree Barbarian doesn't get any direct damage boosts, so idk if its worthy of a whole build video, but i am really liking the idea of getting Shillelagh on a WT Barb. Themes are great, and because WT Barbs don't get a natural damage boost, throwing this in on to a sword and board Barbarian that is already manipulating the battlefield in unique ways seems like a lot of fun and thematic. I imagine him as a Goliath almost Jaguar Warrior looking Barbarian. Shield and Macuahuitl as the weapon (probably just a reflavored longsword or something).

Went changling rogue to level 3, charlatan background for forgery kit proficiency for deeper impersonation when you don't get the downtime for using the assassin fake identity thing. Rest of the way go whispers bard, grab disguise self for longer fake identities than the hour ability you get with the bard subclass, make sure to grab proficiency in stealth and deception. Whenever a baddie goes down and they are concealed from their allies hide, take their form. Rejoin the battle as their ally and stab them for that sweet assassin surprise damage. Please steal this and make improvements or to inspire your own combinations.

I went human so I could get both wizard and Druid initiate feats for Shillelagh, blade ward and true strike. The dm lets me cast shillelagh and blade ward outside of combat, so first two rounds are magic weapon then spirit shroud for big fights. At my table the dm nerfed topple to only work once per round so might have to pick up shield master at 12 to be annoying.
