Mods that I did or that were on the boat that I feel are mandatory are anchor windlass, wallace kerosene boat heater, my boat has an alcohol stove and I love it, bait table aft for fishing and using as a table for my small grill, second battery, wash down hose from the fresh water tank, second chartplotter/fish finder. Fusion sells a bluetooth adapter at West Marine for $45 that plugs directly into that existing radio. It's a five-minute upgrade that will sound great and save money for more adventures. The old twins vs single debate is a tough one. I would recommend if you go with a new single and kicker look at the weight of the kicker. Some 9.9s weigh the same as the 15 and some 15s weigh the same as the 20. I also boat camp in some remote areas and have learned to appreciate redundancy in everything out there. An added benefit of the single and kicker is using a separate fuel tank. I suspect you have learned most marine engine problems are fuel related and having a separate fuel system gives peace of mind as well. Hope this helps and looking forward to seeing your future adventures!
Your boat is wired for twins already I’d run those to the ground if good compression tests, also you can idle with one engine and alternate motors to save fuel. Once those engines die then look at the redo project. You could get another 1,000 hours or so out of those without spending $. You can still use your stove for storage when not using it, I’d keep it and I’m sure it’s efficient, can warm your cabin in the winter! Good luck with all of your projects!
You are probably right Steve..... They only have 537 hours on them... Still a lot of life in them. I'm not to worried about warming in the winter. I'd like to have the option to cook outside in the cockpit on a protable stove top. No need to carry two stoves.
Hey Trip I hope all is well. You may want to make some poles or use large inflatable balls to put under the cover so it stays tight when it rains. That will allow the water to run off and not pool up. Can’t wait for the adventures to begin 👍
The steering wheel being difficult to turn is air in the hydraulics, likely the seals on the rams at the back need rebuilding; I just rebuilt both of mine for the same reason

It would be so sick to take it out on a huge trip maybe doing some of the great loop, or exploring the keys... imagine going to the Dry Tortugas or the bahamas lol.. so much stuff to see and explore.. and we only live once.. atleast maybe we do lol
I would stick with 2 engines for docking and going through locks single-handed. I would also add an outdoor steering station for the same reasons. Those Wallace diesel heaters are really expensive, you should be able to sell it very easily.
I'm going to give the twins a test run for a while and see how they do. I'm used to manuevering with a single engine but I certainly understand how nice twins are. Yea, I need to see that heater. I wonder where I could do that easiest?
I know its a boat but watch for corrosion under a tarp. I put my bike under one for a month and down south with all this humidity, I had rust pop up all over it and even on some new stainless cables.
I think any route you go would be fine, personally I wouldn’t be in a hurry to repower if both motors check out fairly well in regards to compression etc. I’ve learned in my many projects that the perfect is the enemy of the good in some situations. Repowering would be in my future plans, but if they are mechanically sound I wouldn’t be in a rush. When I did repower I probably would go single as well like you plan to. Sick boat man!
RV cover is a great idea. Just plan to empty out the water that collects every time it rains no matter how light. Good job for a kid if there the right age. 😂. It was my job growing up. We tried for years to use pvc pipe to build a frame but we never could get it right.
Can’t wait for your adventures with the C-Dory, I’m excited to see what you have planned out. You’ve definitely got me wanting one for sure, what a very cool boat!
Look into a bracket for the back of your boat, it helps plane time and fuel efficiency. And if your taking trips to Bahamas your gonna need a bigger motor than a 115.
Second recommendation for a bracket I see here... I'm not sure I understand the reasoning... are you familiar with C-Dorys? They're already good with getting on plane and fuel efficiency. IDK. Until/unless I understand the reasoning, I have to disagree. It sounds like salting your food at a restaurant before tasting it.
a bracket? Like to extend the motor farther off the rear? I would have to hear the reasoning behind it as well. Gary's understanding of the boats performance seems more on par to what I've learned from other owners.
Run a compression test on each cylinder, that'll give you an idea of the condition of the motors. If they're good, I'd keep them. Tune them up. I'd rather have two motors than one if at all possible.
@@TripSmith I am in the same state of mind - two is better than one and in an emergency you can cannibalize parts from one motor to fix the other - I agree the weight savings would be some but probably would not make a major difference
On my boat trailer where the spare tire bolts up too there is also a spare hub but I have 3 axels and my boat has twin 300 Suzuki 4 stroke and it will plane off with 1
Your hydraulic steering is probably electric pump assisted. Turn on DC power and it should smooth out. Also get a USCGAUX vessel exam. The 2021 sticker will protect you from CG boarding. Plus u need new Florida registration numbers.
Hmmmm, I don't recall seeing a assist pump but I'll double check. Ah cool, that would be a handy exam huh? I've got it registered now in my home state of Alabama ;)
@@TripSmith I have to go with Slim in this case. You've mentioned taking the boat to the Bahamas. Crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas would not be somewhere I'd want to be stuck with a 5 or 9 horsepower outboard on a 22' boat with a squall coming in. Just my 2 cents.
@@TripSmith Are used a Bushnell $300 monocular for a few years on my overnight trips . One of those things that you don’t realize you need until after you have it
Maybe have the outboards rebuilt/ diy it if you can? That way you could be fairly certain about how much you can rely on them, as they would have near new components. Definitely would be cheaper than a new set + you might get a better price for a pair of rebuilt motors than in their current condition.
I second this! If you do decide to keep the motors then get in there and do the maintenance urself and learn them. Mechanic can’t help u while ur out on the water
you will be so much happier with a new motor . and unlike a bilge pump . one is better then two . just dont under power . do it right and you will not regret it
Hey trip, how did the RV cover hold up. Do you remember the model cover you bought. Looking to get one for my 22 cruiser and hoping you can make my search short. thanks for any help.
Please leave the fire extinguisher right where it is. In an emergency it’s easily accessible and apparent for people who may not be familiar with your boat. I also wouldn’t worry about the water system. Most people rarely use freshwater systems because they add a LOT of weight to the boat and you really won’t drink from it. Use portable five gallon water bladders and bottled water. I agree about the stove. You can easily replace it with an alcohol/electric stove. You’re absolutely right about the engine or engines. People get so hung up on having two engines - if you have a good single and maintain it, you should be fine. Just make sure you have proper safety equipment and don’t do stupid stuff like going out in sketchy conditions and get a good tow insurance plan.
JL Audio is the gold standard for marine stereos. They sound fantastic and last the longest of any of their competitors. Fusion's are ok but have a clunky user interface, based on a British style.
Most guys want the redundancy of twins when doing crossings of big water. I know some who insist on twins when crossing to the Bahamas. Probably not necessary with modern outboards, but I wonder how a 5 horse kicker would handle the Gulf Stream if something happened to the main?
I had twin 115hp's on my 23 foot hydrofield jaguar (Aussie made trihull) and I did love the twin engines, but as you said, when you lost one you had no hope of getting up on the plane. It did give me peace of mind though, knowing I had two strong motors. But as for docking, they were too close together to work any different to a single. If you want to use forward on one and reverse on the other to turn the boat they need to be on the edge of the hull, like on a cat - two in the center is not the same. The only downside I had to twins was the cost of maintenance. Fuel cost wasn't so much an issue. My 115's were rated at 50l per hour at 100% FOT, I used about 35l per hour each at FOT. They were not working as hard as a single would, therefore I would assume they might last longer. But then I never had a single 200hp on it to compare how hard I would have had to have pushed it. Hope that makes sense.
Yeah personal choice, but had to do a facepalm with that one. "When I'm doing bahama crossings or anything I want to have peace of mind" so you're getting rid of the redundancy 😂. I cant see a 5 or 9.9 doing nearly as well caught in the gulf stream with big wind and seas. But I'ma sailor so what do I know about motors haha!
Unless you're riding a cat or serious about maneuver/station keeping no need for more than one. Added space off the transom too which is very valuable space. I would always mount with a brand new motor never used as well. Trade it in for new once out of warranty. Not sure you can put a big tiller on this hull but always nice to have the option of not needing your steering inside to work to steer your craft even on something this big. Plus add a kicker motor which I think is what these boats are made for in the first place for your second.
Coverting to disc trailer brakes is not to hard of a project to handle and may work with the existing hydraulic cylinder and tubing. If not usually lines are included with the conversion kit.
Renaming boat, sailors are a superstitious lot, be sure you follow the deenaming an renaming procedures. I didn’t and my daughter stepped off and broke her leg. She reminded me of that when I changed the name of the new to me C-Dory. She hasn’t been aboard yet, will do so in Oct. keeping my fingers crossed nothing will happen. However my wife cut her finger badly on her first trip out, there may be good reasons to be superstitious . Sorry you missed the cover I just gave away, see c-brats forum. I have 75hp Honda with 9.9 Honda kicker works good for me. Just returned from FL big bend, exploring rivers, used 9.9 a lot. The 75 was good for longer crossing. I really used the Wallas diesel stove last winter in LA and FL. It warms up the cabin and removes condensation on rainy days. On the big bend trip I used a Coleman butane stove in the cockpit. Liked your previous videos and am lookin forward to C-Dory adventures.
Well, if I'm not superstitious then it shouldn't matter to much lol That's crazy about everyone's mishaps.... I saw that thread! To cool. I plan on a single burner butane as my stove. Hey thanks Dennis! I'm looking forward to them as well!
@@TripSmith there is a lot of moisture in butane and propane when it burns. I had a small propane catalytic heater and I used to camp in the winter and I would wake up with frost all over the cabin on my Catalina 22
Your second bilge should be portable and stowed. 12' of wire with alligator clips on the ends, 500 gph pump, 8' flex tubing and all in a large zip lock. It's only for emergencies. If you have a fuse panel problem this bypasses it. It can be shared quickly with any other boat in distress of sinking.... even if they have no power. 12' should reach.
I would put a 140 on that thing especially if your talking about crossing to the Bahamas if you hit a head sea you don’t want to be maxing out that 90 and burnin a lot of fuel.
Twin 50s are pretty funny. The Yamaha 50 weighs 247lbs and the 115 weighs 377lbs. I bet when you include rigging the differences is almost 150 lbs. I bet the single engine uses fuel at a lower rate than the twins.
Sorry was Building a Fishing for my Neighbor hope to catch your next live . Put the things you don`t want to keep and sell them one line or to your viewers with THEM paying freight . THANKS MOM .
I think you did the right thing with the stove. Just go buy a portable 2 burner at wal mart for $30 bucks. It runs off of small propane tanks and when your not using it it packs small and its ez to store in your cabinet. I would definitely take a trip with the engine set up you have to see how you like it and what fuel consumption is on a long trip. I like the hell out of your boat. Its a nice set up for a adventure boat. Good luck my brother.
Excalty wild, but I'll probably go wtih a single burner. I'll never need two pots at once. I'll be running the twins for a bit at least. We will see how she fairs. THanks!!!
None that I've found or noticed as of yet. I actually cut a hole through some core a few days ago and no rot was present. They are no more susceptible to rot than any other boat with a balsa core (which is a lot of boats). There is a guy here on TH-cam who found a lot of core rot in his, but I think that is a rare instance and there is a reason it did that. Over at the C-Brat's forum (C-Dory owners forum) there are lots of people who have owned multiple CDorys who will continue to buy them due to their quality construction.

I'm going to give the twins a test run for a while and see how they do. I'm used to manuevering with a single engine but I certainly understand how nice twins are. Yea, I need to see that heater. I wonder where I could do that easiest?
Hey I just want to say thanks for the SUP review a while back. I just got a red paddle 12'6" SUP to go camping with.
You're welcome! NICE!!!! ENjoy her!
I know its a boat but watch for corrosion under a tarp. I put my bike under one for a month and down south with all this humidity, I had rust pop up all over it and even on some new stainless cables.
Oh wow, I'll keep my eye on it. I'm getting in and out of the boat regularly so I'll be checking.
Yea, my father-in-law is an outboard mechanic and will be going over them soon. I'll probably run them for a little while at least. Thanks DNF!!!!
Congratulations on the new to you boat.
Thank you!
your in for a wake up call about those motors ..repower is crazy exspensive.wish you luck in the search.
Lol I've been pricing motors for a few weeks now ;)
Very cool man, love the new context with the boat/ restoration and future Adventurers!
Thanks Ryan! Same here!!!
cant wait till you start using it.
Same here Dave!
@@TripSmith IM IN THE PROCESS OF REBUILDING A SMALL JOHNSEN SKIFF....Inspired by your vids...lol
RV cover is a great idea. Just plan to empty out the water that collects every time it rains no matter how light. Good job for a kid if there the right age. 😂. It was my job growing up. We tried for years to use pvc pipe to build a frame but we never could get it right.
I thought so too Shane! It's not holding any water and has been on there a couple of weeks through some big rains.
Buddy you got a game plan.😁
Looking for to your new adventures.👍
Gods love brother .
We will see how it goes ;)
Can’t wait for your adventures with the C-Dory, I’m excited to see what you have planned out. You’ve definitely got me wanting one for sure, what a very cool boat!
Same here Ryan! I've got some good stuff planned ;)
Go for it.
Aye aye Cap'n!
Gotcha. Thanks Andrew!
@@TripSmith I am in the same state of mind - two is better than one and in an emergency you can cannibalize parts from one motor to fix the other - I agree the weight savings would be some but probably would not make a major difference
I'm with you, Trip. Keep it simple w a reliable, well-maintained single engine. Less weight, fewer things to go wrong, less fuel burn.
On my boat trailer where the spare tire bolts up too there is also a spare hub but I have 3 axels and my boat has twin 300 Suzuki 4 stroke and it will plane off with 1
Oh nice spot for a spare hub!!!!
Yes
For steering stiffness, I would make sure to especially grease the zirks on tilt tube of the motor, lots of grease!
Baystar is a manual hydraulic system, without pump assist.
Another great video. You have a good plan to making it ready for it’s first adventure. Looking forward to watching things develop.
Glad you enjoyed it Ronin! You and me both!
C ya at the bank. New boat name. 😂. Great video. Would be a fun boat to be on. Stay safe
There we go! THanks!
I would never go from dual outboards to a single if you already have them. Especially if you ever plan on going into big water or long trips.
Well, if I did really big trips I'd have a kicker more than likely. BUt I've weighed the pro's and con's and feel like a single is better for my use.
Honestly I’d add a transom bracket to push the motor a little farther back and a 115 and you’ll be set!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great adventure spirit! Looking forward to future videos.
Me and you both Todd!
good luck im sure you will geter done
Thanks TP!
A must have is some type of night vision
Who gonna pay for that? lol I have seen that on boat and it seem really cool!
I like his take and just sell the two and buy a single larger engine.
Thanks for the suggestion Teddy!
I second this! If you do decide to keep the motors then get in there and do the maintenance urself and learn them. Mechanic can’t help u while ur out on the water
Sell those old motors and get a single reliable new/newer Yamaha!
you will be so much happier with a new motor . and unlike a bilge pump . one is better then two . just dont under power . do it right and you will not regret it
Thanks Sofa! Sounds good.
Hey trip, how did the RV cover hold up. Do you remember the model cover you bought. Looking to get one for my 22 cruiser and hoping you can make my search short. thanks for any help.
Welcome to the world of stink boats (power boats) !!!!! West Marine WILL be your new friend :) :) :)
Ha! THanks Chris!
If you plan to get rid of that stove. Are you throwing it away or selling it? I am doing a off grid van build. Just asking, thanks!! Sweet boat too!
Selling it, it works perfectly as far as I can tell. Hit me up at tripsmith.live/contact
@@TripSmith thank you!
All great points. Thanks for the input Cheap!!!!!
Fusion is a great speaker depending on age, it is owned by Garmin electronics and can work with newer Garmin panels!
I may run those two speakers inside for a while but probably will put some new ones outside. Leaning toward SKAR Audio
JL Audio is the gold standard for marine stereos. They sound fantastic and last the longest of any of their competitors. Fusion's are ok but have a clunky user interface, based on a British style.
I always preferred twin engines for reliability just like 2 bilge pumps
Yea.... I feel ya
Most guys want the redundancy of twins when doing crossings of big water. I know some who insist on twins when crossing to the Bahamas. Probably not necessary with modern outboards, but I wonder how a 5 horse kicker would handle the Gulf Stream if something happened to the main?
Yea, I'm wondering how it would handle it as well. To many variables lol
I also know that plenty of people have crossed to the Bahamas on jet skis and skiffs. So there's that.
you are going to need a bigger pad of paper cuz that list will never end.
Very true!
best of luck with her !
Thanks Tony!
Good info! THanks for sharing, it made perfect sense!
Trip may be the first person to ever buy a boat with dual outboards and replace them with one.
We shall see where we end up.
Gotcha. I need to look into that.
Name her sea-Trip! Go with 115 especially if going to Bahamas 🙂
Thanks Mark! No going lower than 115 ;)
If I was making the crossing to the Bahamas I would like twin outboards. Not just a kicker motor in the Gulf Stream.
Yea.... well the thing is a single 50hp is about equal to a kicker. It can't get the boat on plane... But that's a good thought.
C Boat!!! Bust out another thousand!!!!
Yep!!!!
Wow that's great.... I'll.have to do that! Thanks for sharing!
What year and size are the motors?
Watch the video,he tells you 🤷🏻♀️
2003 Mercury 50hp 4-strokes.
C Trip maybe could be a new name for Your Boat.
Maybe!
I would put a 140 on that thing especially if your talking about crossing to the Bahamas if you hit a head sea you don’t want to be maxing out that 90 and burnin a lot of fuel.
Copy that. I will go with at least a 115 if I go to a single ;)
Twin 50s are pretty funny. The Yamaha 50 weighs 247lbs and the 115 weighs 377lbs. I bet when you include rigging the differences is almost 150 lbs. I bet the single engine uses fuel at a lower rate than the twins.
Agreed on the weight Tucker! The fuel difference probably wouldn't be huge but would be a difference none the less....
I’ll buy the stove from you - been looking for one of those for my boat.
No kidding? Hit me up Mark - tripsmith.live/contact
two of everything on a boat is good thing. service what you have before you make a decision. how many hours on the motors????
Watch the video ,he tells you 🤷🏻♀️
I'll run them for a while and see how they do. 537 ;)
looking graet dude
Thankya much!
You should watch out for bees and other critters trying to make nests inside the boat and the cover
Yea, I will be on the lookout. Fortunately I go in and out of the boat often and the cover moves a decent amount.
Sorry was Building a Fishing for my Neighbor hope to catch your next live . Put the things you don`t want to keep and sell them one line or to your viewers with THEM paying freight . THANKS MOM .
No worries Chuck! Yea, thanks Mom!
THanks!!!
Is there any rot water damage with the c-dory boat ?
None that I've found or noticed as of yet. I actually cut a hole through some core a few days ago and no rot was present. They are no more susceptible to rot than any other boat with a balsa core (which is a lot of boats). There is a guy here on TH-cam who found a lot of core rot in his, but I think that is a rare instance and there is a reason it did that. Over at the C-Brat's forum (C-Dory owners forum) there are lots of people who have owned multiple CDorys who will continue to buy them due to their quality construction.
Safety. Battery, bilge pump, connections, hoses, pump. Life vests
Good list!
Can you tell me what light you use to film at. I guy? It’s like a little light bar.
Not sure what you're asking. My camera is set to auto?
@@TripSmith sorry. That wasn’t clear. I was looking for a light that I could shine to film at night. I found it on your website. The Litra cube light thingy.take care.
I would get 2 90 Suzuki!
That would be a bit heavy. Most people with these boats run a single 90hp and are happy with them.
Hey Trip, what size shaft is your motor ?
20". They are sold....
Hey Trip, could you theoretically travel to Cuba in this boat? I mean, would it be safe for sea travel like that?
Yes, absolutely 👍🏼
@@TripSmith Oh dude, tell me when your first adventure is going to be? Are you done prepping the boat??? This is going to be awesome!!!!
Git-R-Done 😎👍🏻
LOL I hear ya!
I’d recommend a 4 stroke 115hp. Better to have more power especially on long trips
I agree Shawn!
Man where did you get that strap for your sunglasses? and what style glasses are they? Thanks !!!
That strap is from CHUMS. I have three of those same straps on different glasses - amzn.to/3eBCrKj Those glasses are these Costas - amzn.to/3aYuON9
