Yes, I agree. I think they're used to graceful movement so they're not focusing on generating momentum via power and really forcing their hips to turn with the leg. If they just imagined something annoying to kick at I'm sure they'd all nail it. 😂
I love that the ballet teacher does this. All types of styles regardless of gender styles should be taught. Never know when there is a lack of dancers in performances and someone has to step in (happened to me for a dance show, someone didn’t show up, and I had to step in their place to learn their moves).
Also, I think it could be a cool performance if both man and woman did these kicks during an intense or "fight scene" where suddenly they come together.
Learning to dance ballet from your counterpart’s ‘perspective’ likely helps with partnering for pas de deux or any choreography involving multiple dancers!

I noticed that a lot of them were doing a ballet leg lift, more than a kick. As in, their upper half, was still vertical. They weren't leaning their body with the kick. That's why the dude's kick looks graceful like a swan, and theirs didn't.
I think I get it, I'm far from a pro dancer but I learned ballet for years and the vertical posture stayed with me, I had a skating lesson and fell many times because I forgot to lean forward x,D
That makes sense. There was something more dynamic and kapow about his kicks, and outside of the practice and experience, I couldn't pinpoint exactly why his looked more like a kick and more "masculine". Theirs looks feminine and like the kick part is fighting the rest of their body. (Except one of the girls in the beginning in the middle of the room, kinda rounder. She looked like she was letting the kick and her leg lead the rest of her body, but she had less control and center than they. But that almost seems like that's what you have to unlearn. Like they kept trying to keep to a spin that's centered on the point of a toe, when it's not). Ah it's like there's a weight shift on where the center of the spin is, and their bodies dont quite comprehend it.

Female ballet kind of selects against female jumpers as you need extra muscle for it, not the lean long legs you need to get into a pro ballet school as a female. Yes they still jump but not like the boys can.
His foot is facing the back wall before he even lands where as the girls were facing the front wall or side wall. It's really intriguing to see how differing dance styles influence leg work and feet work.

I had to quit ballet young because of an accident and my academy had like no male students (small town) I've always wondered when the differences in training start, age-wise. As someone who is a pro in MMA try any of those kicks in a real fight and you'd get laid out by an opponent so fricking fast, fanciful fucking kicks have no place in actual combat.

As someone who has done neither ballet or karate… it seems like they could go well together! Ballet is all about control and grace (from a noob perspective) and seems like it would be a great addition to any training you would do for Karate. Or a great addition to almost any other sport TBH.
In the first exercise, none of the girls kicked. They dragged their leg, without bending it for an effective kick. If you kick in the spin, you can get an even more effective spin, than when dragging a straight leg through the spin.

They are more impressive than many "traditional" athletes, because ballet dancers do extremely physically demanding things and have to look fluid and artful while doing it. I did ballet for 15 years and always wanted to have a guy in our classes, but alas

Most ppl look like crap the first time or 2 they try something. Every attempt gets better. The first leg is what you focus on. It stays bent. Then just follow with the second leg and just lift it up as it follows the first. Excellent ladies! Do it more! ❤❤❤
Martial artist here. When dancers do martial moves like kicks, it's always so beautiful and impressive. They have mad control, can do it slowly, and they look like they're floating, whereas martial artists prioritize speed. The slow control and lean-back the guys have in that jump is really impressive. As for why the girls are having trouble, I think their arms aren't in good positions leading into it, and they don't know where in the rotation to lift their leg. Once they get those two things down, it all flows together.
As a musical theatre graduate that girl in blue sweating, dying and panicking was me in every movement class. My 32 oz bottle of water and Inhaler was never enough

It really showcases the ways that these high end performances have been optimized for the different male and female body styles. The hip to shoulder ratios, and above/below waist body mass differences, really change how people move
I love how even when they are trying to do the "boy kick" you can see them instinctively moving their arms like a ballerina when doing the turns to then jump and kick

I can recall the only brown belt in our class who couldn't do a double jumping kick without lifting his knees because he always thought it was like this kick. Took him forever to unlearn.

As a former martial artist, this is exactly what I thought! The men’s jumps were very reminiscent of the jumping or “flying” kicks in Tae Kwon-Do.

Most ppl look like crap the first time or 2 they try something. Every attempt gets better. The first leg is what you focus on. It stays bent. Then just follow with the second leg and just lift it up as it follows the first. Excellent ladies! Do it more! ❤❤❤

Martial artist here. When dancers do martial moves like kicks, it's always so beautiful and impressive. They have mad control, can do it slowly, and they look like they're floating, whereas martial artists prioritize speed. The slow control and lean-back the guys have in that jump is really impressive. As for why the girls are having trouble, I think their arms aren't in good positions leading into it, and they don't know where in the rotation to lift their leg. Once they get those two things down, it all flows together.
As a musical theatre graduate that girl in blue sweating, dying and panicking was me in every movement class. My 32 oz bottle of water and Inhaler was never enough
I love the comparison to the "male gymnasts try women's gymnastics moves". It really showcases the ways that these high end performances have been optimized for the different male and female body styles. The hip to shoulder ratios, and above/below waist body mass differences, really change how people move

I love how even when they are trying to do the "boy kick" you can see them instinctively moving their arms like a ballerina when doing the turns to then jump and kick

I can recall the only brown belt in our class who couldn't do a double jumping kick without lifting his knees because he always thought it was like this kick. Took him forever to unlearn.
As a figure skater I’m please that Michael is breaking down the walls..it’s insane to me to think that girls don’t jump..
