Jack Bruce, the bassist and lead singer, wrote this as a tribute in part to Jimi Hendrix. This was when Jimi first hit the UK like a hurricane. Every rock musician in England came to see his shows. Clapton's use of the wah wah pedal is directly influenced by Hendrix.

And Hendrix loved Cream, too - he famously "broke the rules" on a TV programme where he was playing live by stopping the song he was meant to be playing to break into a cover of "Sunshine of Your Love".

I believe you have it reversed. Hendrix was influenced by Cream and Clapton.
Cream was before Hendrix and he put together a power trio like Cream.

When Cream first started working on this song, despite him being a phenomenal drummer, Ginger Baker apparently had a difficult time getting into the proper beat. It was the recording engineer, Tom Dowd, who suggested he think of the rhythm of a Indian war drum that's typically heard in an old western movie. Once he locked in on that beat, all the pieces fell in place.

Clapton begins the solo with a melodic quote from the opening of'Blue Moon'. It definitely made my ears perk up in '67, iirc, when I first heard it.
Always thought the line was, "I'll stay with you 'til my seeds are dried up."
    I'm not convinced otherwise, tbh.
As to the repetitive nature of it, it IS in fact a modified blues and follows that structure with a chorus that does something completely other than blues.
    Sonically alone, this was groundbreaking.
The virtuosity of the trio also cemented and assured their primacy in the rock pantheon at least until Jimi Hendrix gained widespread recognition for his (r)evolutionary mastery of the guitar, and still their legacy endures.

I think that hazy impression in the song propels the psychedelic sound. Immediately recognizable as 'counter-culture' to the delight of the hip and vexation of the the squares.

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Cream, especially with Jack Bruce and Pete Brown writing the songs, along with a number of groups from mid 1960s through to mid 1970s, were mostly art and music college students who knew their British and Irish poets of 19th century and children's literature to 20th century like Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, Wind in the Willows, Ring of Bright Water, and, a bit later and from a less likely source, Watership Down. Nothing necessarily psychedelic about it except that reading such poetry and prose while pleasantly smoking would have fitted the mood. Mixing heavy blues with such literature proved very popular with many of my classmates though not quite so much to my taste as someone who was not into such EngLit material

They couldn't get this song to sound right in the studio. Then, the legend, Tom Dowd(look him up), said, "Have you ever seen an old western movie where the Indians are playing their tom tom drums? In the movies it's always the same beat, Tom... tomtomtom....".

It doesn't really end like that - the ending had been cut off. Great band. They didn't stay together long, mainly because Ginger Baker (the drummer) kept getting into fights, particularly with Jack Bruce (the bassist). The documentary "Beware of Mr Baker" is an eye-opener and well worth watching. You might want to hit Cream's songs "White Room" and "Tales of Brave Ulysses" next.

In '67 I was 13-years old and learning how to play drums. This song obviously caught my ear because it is a very rare 4/4 song that accents the 1st and 3rd beat. Go Ginger!!

Apart from Jack Bruce killer bass (in part thanks to classical training), I'm glad you noticed his superb voice. Both Jack and Eric sing alternating the double lines, and harmonising elsewhere. Clapton has a slightly more gritty tone. Jack sounds more "pure". He is singing on the "my seas are dried up" line that you liked so much. Really nails that belting line!

  • @w.geoffreyspaulding6588

Cream produced some of the “heaviest” music around in 66 into early ‘68. This period also saw Jimi Hendrix releasing his debut album in ‘67, which set the bar even higher 😅for heavy, psychedelic blues/rock. Clapton left Cream in ‘69 because he wished to pursue a more purely blues-based sound (same reason he left The Yardbirds, as I recall) and Cream disbanded. Had they stayed together, it’s my own opinion that they would not have been able to compete with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and other heavier bands that captured the imagination of the young rock lovers of that time. I’m sure others will disagree.

Try listening to this song again and focus on Ginger's drumming. I never did until I saw a Live YT video of this song. Ginger was a great drummer and seeing him playing Live (on YT- this song), it changed my perception of his contribution(s). After that epiphany I looked at more and more of his work, and have come to respect his talent. Of course the band was called Cream (as in cream of the crop) for a reason, and not taking anything away from Clapton and Bruce, but in a lot of these early 60's and 70's songs the drums didn't get recorded at the dynamic levels as they do nowadays, and drummers can go unnoticed, just like your reaction has shown. No comment on the drums, but I totally understand why. See if have the time to check some of his work, it's pretty mind blowing at times.

Clapton and Bruce are actually trading vocals here. So many great Cream songs to pick from, but you definitely need to listen to the whole Reunion concert in 2005 from The Royal Albert Hall. Especially "Sunshine of your love" where the trade offs at the end are amazing. Cream was basically 2 Jazz musicians (Bruce, Baker) and a premier "Bluesman" (Clapton) created some of the most timeless tracks ever. Here's "Sunshine of your love" from that concert. th-cam.com/video/vyftaay-pFA/w-d-xo.html

btw, I'm a singer in a band, and never trust other people's lyrics either. When I'm going to cover a song I always type in the "song title (and) lyrics" into Bing (I've gotten the best results right on the result page up top. I copy and paste them into a new text document, then copy the official band studio version of the music to my HDD, then play it in vlc media player while reading them. When anything is incorrect I pause and correct, and I always reformat the way these morons write them out - for singing including marks for accentuation, Chorus, turnaround, pause, bridge, etc.. Then print 5 copies for the whole band. My band goes nutso over the fantabulous way that I do it. lol

I have no idea why Jack and Eric take turns singing lines during the verses? The effect it has is that they're singing TO EACH OTHER, which is not just a little gay.
Nothing wrong with that, of course, but this was recorded in the late 60s when being gay was frowned upon, so I don't know if Cream wanted to provoke audiences
with a gay song or if it never entered their minds how this song could be interpreted?
