Darcelle had a wonderful kind heart. When I was a penniless gutter punk she bought me a coffee at the Roxy so many years ago. I saw her preform many times over the years. The last time I saw her was this past January. I took my offspring to celebrate their 21st birthday at Darcelles. Darcelle preformed and I was able to thank her for showing me kindness all those years ago.. rest in power.

I remember my 1st time at Darcelle's, It was a Friend's Bridal Shower and.... OH DID I HAVE FUN!!
The experience COMPLETELY CHANGED what little and VERY few reservations I had about the LGBTQ SOCIETY. I then went to work the following night, as a COCKTAIL WAITRESS & a KARAOKE HOSTESS in DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER. (where I just happened to meet my 2nd husband as well). Forever CHANGED my life, Thank you!!!!
    S.S. 😃

I worked as a cocktail waitress at the same Karaoke bar in downtown Vancouver. Darcelle came in all the time. I had some great conversations with her and her friends. I also made jewelry for those who asked. Very fond memories of that job.

Remember that face at 25:15. That's Scott Lively, then head of the OCA and the man responsible for current criminalization of LGBTQ people in Uganda. He's responsible for Uganda's initial 'Kill The Gays' bill after traveling there in 2009.

Just showed up in my feed and I Yassed in my mind all the way through it, thinking that I'd just found a new drag queen I can form the comfort of my bed and on TH-cam... Then I read the comments.
May hate character Darcelle, and the person who portrayed her rest in peace.
    Much love.

And tragically you helped raise the cost of living in doing so. Another generation later, we have homeless people dying out in front of the establishment that Darcelle was known for….. really all just because of how expensive your hedonistic lifestyles are

Great documentary. RIP to a drag icon, and legend, who remained above all, a kind person, and a unique and original entertainer, who broke ground in difficult times.
Now, as a straight woman, I have to say this, it's my opinion, but I think it ties into this documentary, and needs to be addressed.
I hope people watch this and see the difference between real drag, which is a form of art, and the fake drag that predators are often trying to pass off (under the push of "it's inclusionary training", or what, I'm not sure) at middle schools.
And that people can then make more informed decisions on that topic, seeing where and how drag as entertainment evolved.
And seeing that a man in bright green ripped fishnet leggings, pink heels, a paisley leotard, a thrown together makeup and outfit, and a rainbow clown wig, prancing his beard stubbled face (and other) around in front of 5th graders, and denigrating them if they don't put money in his garter, or whatever the hell nonsense they are bringing, is not drag. It is predation.
Love drag. Love true drag queens. Abhor drag imposters. I wish the legendary drag queens would speak out on this. I know they don't want association with it. It is dragging down drag, no pun intended.

"Larger than life is just the right size". I moved to Portland in 1983 and one of my co-workers (lesbian) at my first job took me to the show. It is where I first was exposed to the gay community. Yes, you can't call yourself a Portlander until you have experienced Darcelle. She was such a force for the gay community and for our Portland community in general. Such a big heart. RIP Walter and Darcelle.
