How to cut a regulation cup on a golf course green. (aka cutting cups or setup)

  • This is a demo of how to cut a straight, clean, and regulation shaped cup in a golf course green. I have 8 years of experience doing this, at Mill Creek Country Club in Mill Creek, WA. Tips: 1. Don't wiggle or rotate the cup cutter, it "volcanoes" the cup and no matter how hard you try, you will never get it back to spec. 2. Drop your cup cutter from high enough that it pierces the green at high speed. Don't throw, let gravity do the work. I have another video here that demonstrates it. 3. I cut the cup the day before, consistency means I did not have to "fluff" the soil when I placed the plug. I will post another video about this later. In this video, I eyeballed soil depth and determined it was correct for the plug without any adjustments. 4. Always clean the flag stick. It's professional. 5. I do round out the old hole. This gives me room to place the plug without leaving any soil on the turf and to adjust the plug height by 1/16 of an inch. Press in from around the cup if you are going to be too low, Press the plug itself so it spreads out if you are too high. 6. Get on and off in as little moves as possible. The more you "work" you cup or setter or cutter, the more you go out of spec on the cup diameter, green height, or you leave greens that are bumpy. 7. Don't EVER bend the flag to straighten it. You should be able to cut cups straight with one shot. If not, use the cup puller, then reset the cup with a little masse (use the cup to shave one side of the hole a little) to adjust the cups the flag is straight. Bending flags breaks them and bends them. Our greens are 10.5 in this video. Filmed with a canon power shot, June 12 2011, 18th Green. Private course, members only, memberships are available, contact www.millcreek.cc. Thanks to Mike Y who trained me my first day, and Rick Y who helped perfect my concept, and Paul H, for opportunities, the superintendant.

My first year as a greenskeeper here in Ontario Canada, and I love my job so much. Too bad it's only for a year or two though. I play golf non stop and that's the perk working at a golf course, free golf anytime. And the best thing is I treat the course when working there as I (A golfer) would expect it to be when I play. This being my first year and all, golfers are commenting directly to me how awesome the greens have been this year, best in a long time.

Did this job for many years and always carried a little water to clean the plug edges before knitting (knitting is important to blur the edges and make the plug disappear). Other than that, a great demo. Oh, and say hello to Paul for me.

What a lovely comment from danny mac. Sorry for that. But to help resolve that issue of old cups showing I suggest kneading the edges after you place the plug. Take a very small diameter screwdriver or ball mark repair tool and slightly raise the edges around the plug. Then knead the plug and edges together with your hands and/or feet. This will blur the line from the old cup much more effectively. I than suggest taking a 1-2" diameter pvc pipe and rolling over the plug.

I would always throw a little sand around the edges of the old hole location. Helped it grow back a little quicker and cleaner.

You can also use the PVC pipe to roll over and around the cup itself to ensure that you do not get that volcano effect that you described. Both the kneading and hand rolling are suggestions from the GCSAA (I believe, Ill try to dig up the link I have on proper cup cutting). A 10.5 in early spring is pretty good in the NW. I've been an Asst. Superintendent for the past 3 years and have worked on the golf course, that my family has owned, operated, and built in1965, for the past 15 years.

Is there a difference between punching the cup cutter into the green, or simply resting it on the green and then turning into the green? I punch, always have. Was taught that way 15 years ago but am now being told by my boss to turn it in. I find it gives a cleaner edge if it is punched in. Any suggestions? I have watched TH-cam vids and it seems to depend on place and preference.

Troy Center yea thats what i tried to tell him. Our cup cutter is rarely sharp unless you spend a lot of time getting it sharp. Sand based greens too. I wld think turning it in wld crush and tear roots, stems and stolons causing damage. But you cant tell some people n e thing. Thanks.

Hey troy, how do you get a job as a greenskeeper, do you need any degree or any education? or you get trained by the golf course?
Do you believe a 20 year old like me with no experience could be hired as a greenskeeper? or are there any other jobs available for non-experienced people like me? like is there a job to drive the golf carts or something? like to park them.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know what you know... where is your video? If you only do Ryder Cup, then that's a week every two years.... and yet you think you are more experienced than someone who does it daily? And why can't he touch the plug? Since when did touching grass become a horrible sin?

Sorry. This is not the right way. Wrong equipment! Ok for the average course only.
