Tokyo Groove Jyoshi is a band formed by three session musicians. Shinobu Kawashima is a award winning (in Japan) master player of the shamisen featured in this video. She can put that three stringed banjo looking instrument into any genre of music tastefully and with ease. TH-cam offered me a version of them doing What is Hip, last year, while checking out some Tower of Power videos. They are really something else.
Nice you popped up on my feed, like Juna Serita did a month or 2 ago. Beyond the novelty of an all girl Japanese band, I just thought they sounded as good as they look.
That is a shamisen, very few artists about on TH-cam let alone in this type of music, very distinctive sound and great to see it being used.
this isn't in my wheelhouse generally, but Juna and her friend's keep me coming back for more...

Great version of the old Tower of Power hit!
Yeah! This is the version of What is Hip with Kawashima on shamisen. A fresh take on this number.

The samisen is a kind of banjo with three nylon (or silk) strings. Its played with a huge plectrum. It is has no frets and has a kind ow twangy sound.
