@@mike2003ars no, it really isn't. It's a great song, but he seems to be "indifferent" although "appreciative" of the longer classical passages, and is outright turned off by the growls. So that would be the worst possible pick for him.
The tracks listed above are all great suggestions, especially Moon Above...
I think he would mostly enjoy songs from the last two albums, like All Things Will Pass, Universal Truth, Era, Chrysalis, Wilde Flowers.

Ichsannur Farizki just came to a realization though. When I started liking Opeth I was a death metal fan, for me it was the clean parts and the clean singing I had a hard time with, I was already used to growls and heavy playing. I personally don’t think he will ever get into Opeth really, it’s a band you have to try to like until you do it and I don’t think he knows how to interpret the growls really. Opeth just isn’t for everyone, as easy as that.

    Opeth - Continuum
    Opeth - Lovelorn Crime
    Opeth - The Wilde Flowers
    Opeth - Era
Opeth - Will O the Wisp

All Opeth songs with no growls from their later albums. I think these would vibe with you a lot more than their older material.

I highly recommend "Lovelorn Crime " from them. It's a very simnple Song for Opeth i think but that makes its so interesting to me, its nithing complicated yet absolutely beautfully written and it gives an amazing feel. And.. sorry for dropping it again. If you like Opeth i also ahve to drop the Name Katatonia ( Forsaker is a good Intro Song for them ) again ! but i also want to bring the name "Soen" into the game here. taking that song out of context is a crime. the whole album really needs to be taken as a whole to even come close to the potential it has. IMO their best album. It doesn't have the straight highlights that some others do, but as a whole it by far works the best. It as a whole is a highlight.

geez the first one I found on the net that also finds this album as their best one. I think that too. They simply didn't give a f*** about any demands of the fans and the label and together with Jens Bogren put all the experimentation on the composition, lyrics, production they could think that would fit, and the results are just amazing.

I think people recommended this since you wanted more dark stuff that soothes current times, but this song certainly require a certain mood. Try Hex Omega from the same record, there's no growling and has a nice progressive groove to it. Otherwise A Fair Judgement is probably more up your sleeve. More Steven Wilsonie, he even helped with the production for that record. Cheers!

My recommendation is to concentrate on the albums Damnation, Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum. These albums don't have any 'growling vocals' at all and with Heritage onwards are very much more progressive rock with classical, folk and jazz influences. Long time listener, first time commenter. I think you’ve made it so clear that rough vocals don’t really vibe with you. I am the same way and as far as I can tell, they don’t really vibe with the band itself anymore either! I’m not one for suggesting things just to get people into stuff I like, I just happen to see a lot of parallels in our taste at a similar age. I’m 36 now and discovered a lot of the same music you are now when I was your age and maybe a little younger, and so I am just hoping you don’t give up on these guys.
Opeth is one of my top five favorite bands of all time (Tool is my undisputed number one, Porcupine Tree is number two), but it took a while for me to get there (ten years ago Dream Theater was one of my absolute favorites and Opeth was just a great band I listened to sometimes and now they’ve sort of swapped places). While Opeth’s musical arrangement has always been amazing, their rise to my three spot has been a result of their prog turn (all clean vocals and prog/classical elements) which covers the albums Damnation (Steven Wilson produced), Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum. I think you’ll find more personally enjoyable individual cuts from those, though I must say as whole packages, the albums Blackwater Park and Watershed are absolutely incredible albums to my taste even with some rough vocals, but are better as a whole rather than cut up!
I’m not even suggesting pieces for reaction here. I just hope you’ll take some time to consume more of their stuff on your personal musical journey because I think you’ll get a lot out of it in the long term! Be well and thanks for sharing.

Completely agree man... Drew please don’t give up on listening to them even if you don’t react. Listen the entire albums instead of song. They are a band who have nuances rather than catchy hooks and riffs. Their riffs are full of tasty melodies and you will pick them up on whole album and repeat listens. Many prog rock/metal bands of today like Jinjer etc cite Opeth as big influence. Don’t react to them just give give them a spin when you are free

Everything you said about this track makes me think you need to listen to Emerson Lake & Palmer or King Crimson. My personal favorites would be Karn Evil 9 and 21st Century Schizoid Man, respectively. The first one is about 30 minutes long so that might be a bit much for a reaction, but it sounds like you would love the elements of both bands, very proggy and has that sort of feel you were talking about at the end of this song.
Edit: After reading the comments, I would like to also agree with anyone suggesting Burden. I'm not a massive fan of Opeth, and I am a massive fan of Steven Wilson, so I think Burden would be right up your alley. Everything you like about Opeth and nothing you don't.

  • @RohannvanRensburg

Something I've found with extreme consistency -- Opeth is slow burn. Listen to it a few times. Keep trying. It will start sinking in and you'll start "getting" it. It took me 5 years to get them. Everyone I know that loves them had to revisit them numerous times.
Man I love this song and what it does to people. Just as you're getting into the groove 10:53 happens. This whole song feels like a descent into madness.

Thanks for the honest reaction! I personally feel the same about Hessian Peel so I'm not surprised it wasn't too memorable for you. I'd say try The Moor, Bleak, or The Leper Affinity since these are much more delivering Opeth Songs (The last one is mostly growls, the other two are mixed). Hopefully you find some bangers amongst them!

Listen to me...you will like Burden and A Fair Judgement by Opeth. Trust me! For some reason everybody keeps recommending “the agressive ones” to you. Ahahah Btw new Opeth albuns have ZERO growls! :D
Oh! And check out Drag ropes by Storm Corrosion

I have posted this on his every video
A fair judgement and Burden will be so so much suitable ... He really need to consider these 2... He can even make a single video of both. That way he will be spared of doing more Opeth videos than what he actually likes

Like many other people are saying, try Burden by Opeth : )
btw almost half of their discog (Damnation, Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress, In Cauda Venenum) contain no growls, so plenty of songs to try out : )

If you like the mellow more acoustic classical stuff then check out Will O The Wisp. Hessian Peel is my personal favourite as I love how ballanced it is between heavy and mellow and I'm more of a mellow music kind of guy. Will O the wisp is beautiful though.

I think that if you really want to like Opeth you need to listen the song multiple times , so you can understand the message or the elements that the song contains. Please keep doing Opeth reactions!
My personal recommendation is Death Whispered a Lullaby, is a short song but with beautiful instrumentation.
