Filming and editing - 5 hours,
Creating an ember - 3 hours,
Preparation and Cooking - 2 hours,
    Simon eating - 10 minutes,
    Maggie eating - 5 seconds 😀
    Great video, thanks for sharing.

And time well spent .. we have all spent more time sitting in traffic! It is the quality of the time that is important. And what could be better for mental health than a nice afternoon with a dog. (my dogs wrote that part) ;}.

Another great video Simon - thanks for sharing the book and your many and persistent efforts - well done on getting there in the end! I'm not practiced, but have seen it done by a 'fire expert'. Top Tips - the Spindle end in contact with the Fire Board needs to be with freshly cut angled flat surfaces (think Tortoise Shell), the char comes from all those corners being knocked off under heat and pressure collecting in the 'V', the smoke tells you plenty of hot char being generated. The 'fire expert' then said start slow, build up a small pile of char without wanting or expecting to create an ember. Refresh the angled cut surfaces, this time go with speed and pressure - and any ember now falls into the pile of char and gives you a fighting chance to pick up and transfer the ember to the Birds Nest tinder bundle (he put a leaf under the 'V' so the char pile with ember could be transferred more easily). Good to know - the Spindle and Fire Board have to be really dry - expecting to forage and pick up really dry wood on the day is a bit of an ask - the 'fire expert' explained - 'the ancients carried their own fire kit - dry tinder bundle, dry spindle and dry fire board and lengths of ready-made cordage - only the bow needed to be harvested locally - that way you have a fighting chance to make an ember and get a birds nest tinder bundle alight in a wide range of conditions (cold, humid, wet etc). Note: persistence does not always pay - actually, it might be a sign that things are not quite right - sawing away endlessly just creates a smooth-ended spindle that might create a blackened friction burn divot, but not much in the way of char - if in sawing away there is no longer smoke arising - take a break - use a sharp knife to make fresh angled flat surfaces to the spindle end and when you restart you know you have the best chance. Lastly - in North America - 'Cotton Wood' is known as an easier material to use in friction fire making - here in the UK the direct equivalent is 'Poplar' - which happens to throw down dead branches - so searching out and harvesting this wood to dry out and make an 'ancient fire making kit' is likely very much what our ancestors did. All easy enough to say from the comfort of an armchair - but this is a practical sport - only practice will make perfect! Simon - it is fantastic you have shared your efforts! Thank you!

I was amused to see we came up with the same idea to use the de Buyer's pans instead of a cast iron skillet. They are actually used for crepes and I've heard them called blue steel. I'm car camping so weight is not such an issues . I'm interested to see how it pairs with my new Firebox stove that I'll be playing with on my upcoming camping trips.

I enjoyed that Simon, Maggy looked really at ease in the front of the canoe. And that is one hell of a bug out shelter you built with the Nettle, an impenetrable fortress of Urtica dioica. Food looked good, I had a play about with Nettle & Tater soup myself lately. I usually go for a longer spindle for bow drill, about 10-12inches, that way I don't need to lean over my knee as much and allows me to breath in more oxygen as i drill because I'm not crushed against my thigh trying to control a terribly short spindle. Thanks for sharing mate, take care.

Well done fella, you got there in the end, but in fairness, sourcing materials in the field you did alright. Many would struggle to achieve an ember from material dried on a radiator. Regular practice is key. Friction fire Tuesday seems to be a thing. Give it a go.

Yes dear Bloke in the Woods, that spindle is much too short. I don't know how many variations of the bow drill and spindle fire start I have looked at on TH-cam. I suppose I could search through and find what I thought was the best of the selection to hand on to you.. I grow nettles on my terrace and make a tea. Sometimes salad - I have a sort of nettles that doesn't sting! And a very vicious one that becomes the tea!

Bow drill, never done it before but watched Paul Kirtley's video on it, might be useful to watch that, cos as I was watching you I immediately thought spindle was too short, maybe even the second one. Great video, always good music too. Well done with that fire, I was thinking that about the length of the spindle before you said, enjoyed seeing you cooking the nettles I sort of feel lucky that I would have been happy eating them nettles just with the onions and meat but then I don’t eat fancy stuff indoors so maybe why. I have a very very old recipe book that has recipes for every freshwater fish, it’s a shame there are restrictions on what freshwater fish we can catch & eat in this country as I would love to catch my food and eat it like pretend I had to, no choice.
I guess it’s you who has to keep changing the camera positions & then carry on, I can’t imagine you have an assistant doing it so can appreciate the effort that goes into making your videos.
Very envious of your canoe it looks the dogs ....

Beautiful video as usual. You are unusual in that you show how difficult and how persistent you are. So far I’ve only seen a 'how too ... ‘ from an expert who makes it look as easy as using a lighter! I make creamed spinach a lot and although I din't use onions I add a touch of nutmeg, which is delicious, and also goes with the lamb. Try it sometime😊

    I enjoyed it all
I like the bit at the beginning I felt quite peaceful watching it as there was no talking then into the main part I really thought the content was just right ...It must have been a great feeling when you got fire 10/10 for your hard effort ... then the cooking I love nettle soup something we were fed as youngsters as it is full of iron and great vitimins ...when in flower I think you can pick them with no sting ...can't remember now ...either way great info .... I hope you will make a video on your survival week away!!!
