  • In this chapter I am determined to let the apostle speak for
himself. And in his second letter to the Corinthians, how he did
speak! Words simply poured out of him, hot words, hot as
molten lava. Try as he might, he could not shake off his anxiety
over the believers at Corinth; though he might try to broach
other topics, again and again he was drawn back to the superapostles
and their teaching. He simply could not rid his mind of
the damage they were inflicting on the ekklēsia at Corinth.
Consequently, to get the full force of his argument - and what
an argument it is, what momentum, what passion! - I make no
apology for reproducing extensive extracts from his long letter,
and gathering them to read as an entire argument. Some
repetition there may be, but if you object to that you must take
it up with Paul, not me: he was simply consumed with his
material; the rules of 21st-century publishing-houses didn‟t cut
any ice with the apostle. Please do not skip the extracts; allow
their full weight, which Paul so clearly felt pressing on him, to
work the apostle‟s desired effect on your mind and heart. He
was not writing an academic treatise in a disinterested way,
meticulously even-handed, non-polemical. He was bursting to
boiling point. And he made no bones about letting it show. May
I suggest you actually read his words aloud? Try to stand in the
apostle‟s sandals as you read on.
