    I put bamboo barrier in so they don't clump out the whole yard.

      Thanks. Unfortunately, the entire clump died about a year later. However, the next summer new culms started to come up. Now, after five years the clump has regained about 80% of it's height and girth.

      What is your usda hardy zone? It died from cold?

    Nice bamboo, I like to thin out the bamboo annually. Also, the fallen leaves contain silica, which aides in the strength of the culms, so it is recommended to not rake the leaves, but to spread mulch or compost. Could this be dug and replanted every spring? I live in a cold climate, and grow both running (for the thick stems) and clumping for screens, but it would be cool to grow a tropical bamboo along side my banana plants and other tropicals.

      FYI, this clump of oldhamii almost totally died months after I shot this video. I never observed any gregarious flowering. I'm still in the process of cutting the dead culms down. Some were almost 70 feet in length. However, late this past summer about 8-9 new culms came up, some not full size but others of normal size. Whether the clump reestablishes itself over the coming years, I will just have to wait and see. But, I was shocked when the clump mostly died as it was only about 12 years old, started from just one small culm about four feet tall.

      @Courtney Saunders Yes, my Bambusa oldhamii is coming back strong. The following summer (after the die back) maybe 10 smaller culms came up. But last summer many more culms, and bigger diameter and taller culms came up. I suspect this summer the recovery will continue. Also, I had a very nice clump of Bambusa chungi that was completely blown over (can be seen in my Hurricane Irma Aftermath TH-cam video) is also making a nice recovery. As far as a virus, I have no idea if my bamboo suffered any. virus.

      @Courtney Saunders It wasn't cold that killed my Bambusa oldhamii. I have a huge clump of Bambusa membranacea (which is more cold tender) and it's never been killed, but was leaf defoliated in December of 2010. It may vary well have been a disease that killed my bamboo, I have no idea. I'm just happy that the clump is reestablishing itself.

    I saw sprouts on the nodes of my bambusa (I only have 1 cane). I want to cut that parts and put them in soil. Hope it works

    Do any seeds form up top and fall to the ground to propagate? I'm afraid to grow, I dont want seeds growing in a protected creek near my home.

      Nope. No seeds. In fact, the entire clump died less than one year after I took this video. But the following year some new, but smaller culms came up, then the new seasonal culms got fatter and taller with each passing year. I'd say by the end of this year the clump will be almost back to normal height. But they are messy. I rake up fallen leaves often, especially during the spring months when they are pushing out new leaves and dropping old ones.

    can they grow on swamplands/ marshlands?

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That I can not answer. I don't have much knowledge about bamboo growing. My bamboo is growing in dry soil soil, mostly sandy soil. I'm growing eight species of bamboo, all in dry sandy soil. I have no swampy, marsh, boggy, etc., type of soil.

      Yes it does grow well in the swamps and marshlands I live right on the Sabine River it’s all swamp land and it loves the sandy muddy soil we have, just don’t grow it where it’s always wet put it on a little hill or something
