Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing. 🗡Join the Online Iaido Training with Seki Sensei🗡 Sign Up Here (One Lesson FREE): www.patreon.com/sekisenseiiaidotraining Interested in taking Iaido lessons directly from the 8th Dan Iaido Master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shinden Ryu, Seki sensei? I would like to thank you and Seki Sensei for covering the Tessen, war fans or iron fans have always been an interesting item to me, they could keep you cool as well as protect you.
I am very impressed. I had of course heard of the "war-fans" but I had dismissed them as an invention of story writers and manga artists. To learn what they actually look like and how they were used was very exciting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Spreading the word to everyone I know that is of sound mind and spirit you definitely deserve 1,000,000 + subscribers what you and Seki Sensei are doing is insurmountable the fact that he is allowing so many to be a part of Asayama ichden ryu..I can't even find the proper words in my language to express my gratitude
As an old saying goes: "Looks can be deceiving".....Fans doesn't look like a threat at all, but I can tell you this that it can be very useful, especially for atemi strike to the eye and so on and so forth. Excellent video series and hope to see Seki Sensei on-line course some day.
I’ve always loved the idea of fans used as weapons, ever since I played Kitana in Mortal Kombat. I never knew that they are also used in real life, and I’m happy that it’s possible! It look really great as self-defense and it’s nice to learn about the techniques used in there.
In the Sino fiction about Justice Bao, one of the 七俠五義 is known for his use of the iron fan. For his one, it's said the edge of the fan is capped with sharp pieces of metal, that can cut like a knife, when the fan is slashed at an opponent.
The distraction "atemi" with the tassel in Part 2 reminds me of the only "strike" my Aiki-Jitsu Sensei taught us. The only time he recommended hitting someone was as a distraction so that the greater technique would be more effective.
I was thinking a bit about that, the way samurai used to develop methods for turning every available resource as a weapon. In a way, such specialized thinking is akin to the Greek philosophers of old times, whose lives were also devoted only to taking an idea, concept or argument to its last consequences. My uttermost respect for those devoted to keep such traditions alive.
Can't wait for part 2! I found a metal fan I want to add to my weapons collection and these videos help me to understand how they were actually used. Thank you Seki Sensei and Shogo for sharing!
I studied Asayama Ichiden Ryu under a man who had studied under Kai Kuniyuki Sensei. It is an amazing style, but now in Toronto, Canada, I have no teacher anymore for Asayama.
Thank you for the video. I'm suprised that some Tessen don't open up. Kind of seemed counter-productive to me, but turns out, that had some use too. As for questions: Are there any actual techniques that makes it look to the enemy as if you were going to attack from one point, when you will actually go for another point? Or is it just an idea that came from Anime? (Like fighting scenes using "after-images" or something similar)
Wow, can you talk more about how the tassel would get the attention of the deity. Probably it would be an entire separate video but could sensei talk about which deity they were followed for which ryu / tradition !Scott
The Tessen are by far one of my favorite weapons. I see many katas preformed with different weapons. Are there any katas for the Tessen? I have only ever seen one hand fan performance at a tournament with metal fans with Chinese choligraphy. But I'm not sure what style they were from.
there is one iron fan in an anime titled Utawarerumono. this iron fan is completely made of steel and is also functions as a regular fan. does such iron fan exist and is it practical is combat?
In Avatar the last Airbender, Avatar Kyoshi used fans as weapons. Kyoshi island , the place she came from was the most influenced japanese place in this universe! I love that Tessenjutsu was represented in this animes!
Great video as always. I was wondering if small tedate shield will make an apparition on this channel. I have seen them still being practiced in some dojos but couldnt find more informations about them.
Dear Sensei, dear Shogo, thank you for this great video! I would definitely like to learn more about tessen. Were they also used by ladies? Tgank you again .
So this begs the question: would a samurai carry an additional bamboo/paper fan for cooling down in addition to the war fan? Because it seems the war fan would not be very good for cooling down, and I think that is still important. 😂
I'm sorry that my comment isn't relevant to this video, but can Sensei comment on how his swords are retained in his belt? In previous videos, it seems like he can very easily slide them in and out of his belt and I wonder if they could fall or lose their proper position easily if someone had to run, climb, tumble, etc. while wearing them in this way. Were there other ways of setting the swords in the belt for greater security? Thanks so much!
I always wondered whether the ones that opened were used in combat. Apparently yes but got replaced with the solid wood or steel ones after a while is what I'm getting from this.
Such iron fan are perfect to make as lethal weapon too. The steel piece could make it sharp, and conceal with high quality paper. When your life get threatened, use the steel stick to pierce your enemy. Just hold it like Wolverines Claw. Deadly yet artistic.

your videos with lots of historical details on lesser known weapons are great! i hope this channel continues to grow.

I have a wooden fan with a big tanto inside. The blade is from the 15 century and the wooden saya is later, probably 17 century
I love the educational format of part 1 and the example uses in part 2. Live this format
1:09 "As you can see from his collection, Seki Sensei is a big FAN of Tessen."
I see what you did there, Shogo-san.
This is great I have always been interested in Tessen design and use.
every tip you gave was right on point! thanks a million!
This is really one of those things that is so weird to think it actually existed rather than being a creation of fantasy.
I am learning some very interesting stuff through your channel including about the existence of these.
Can't wait for part 2! I found a metal fan I want to add to my weapons collection and these videos help me to understand how they were actually used. Thank you Seki Sensei and Shogo for sharing!
After learning Tessen at my dojo I applied those teaching in carrying a large comb.
I love these segments! Learning about ghe history and forgotten weaponry from the forgotten generations! So cool. Thank you sensei *low bows
Brilliant. Thank you. 👍🙏
Thank you to you too!!
Yay! I was hoping you would cover fans and how to use them for defense
this channel is a hidden gem
I went to a Metallica concert and there were a lot of metal fans in the audience

Wonderful videos. Love the history and viewing the different fans. Thank you!❤️
Thank you for this video!
Very interesting. 🙏
This is a fantastic channel. Please give my warmest regards to Sensei.
Great video ! Would love to see more techniques or Waza with the tesson. And maybe how it was used against other weapons. Scott

It should be mentioned that their man ussage was as a signaling device for generals, who would very rarely enage in combat (but famously did)

Dear Sensei, dear Shogo, thank you for this great video! I would definitely like to learn more about tessen. Were they also used by ladies? Tgank you again .
Were the solid metal tessen designed to have the look but just be a sturdy extra tool in the arsenal of the samurai?
I will visit Tokyo soon. Is there any shop there that sells folded fans made of metal or strong wood?
I love this channel. Always been interested in Japan and its history and art. Gentleman-warriors with style.
Thanks
Most interesting aspect of Japanese history, little known of here in England!
これだけ並んでいると壮観ですね。

Hi Shogo, can you talk about the traditional stove iori? They look fo comfy and convenient to use. . . If they don't smoke up the room.
Now if only I could find a place to buy a Tessen.
Always wondered about the fans... guess im one of your biggest "fans" now...
the "war fan" has always intrigued me...most of my martial training has been in Chinese martial arts (tai chi) and there are many fan forms out there.
👍

I adore iron fans! We have a set of two that are lovely, and (probably) lethal. I’ve only shown them to a few people - they’ve all cringed. 🫣😆
Thank you for the ❤️. I’ve subscribed to this new adventure of yours. I’m excited to see more! Best wishes!
