This 23 year old Acura looks a million times better than ALL current Acuras do! I loved these cars as a kid in school, I still love them today! It's a "LEGEND" for a reason:) I miss the days Acura had real names for its cars.
+Acc0rd79 Same story with Lexus!!! The first gen SC looks better than pretty much anything in Lexus's current stable! Though, the 2017 Lexus SC looks like it might bring sexy back : )
lexus messed up with the pretentious design, a direct result of all the car "automotive journalists" whining on an on about how "boring" the older designs were. in fact their designs were some of the most sensible with a subdued elegance that age very well. I bet the current cars will age very badly just as most "loud" designs tend to do.
Acura dropped the ball when they changed to their alphabetical nomenclature for its cars. Legend had great name recognition and prestige. Who the heck knows what an RL is?! These cars were Legendary (pun intended).
If you want to sell outside the English market then no. Everyone knows the cars from the big German and Japanese brands that use numbers and letters so I don't get what you are all confused about. What would be confusing is naming them some English name and then use other names for other countries. Just think about it.
The Legend was an instant hit and classic in the early 90's. Rappers like Wu Tang used to drive and rap about them and even Ludacris still has his to this day. They were as popular as the LS 400 and helped put Acura on the map along side with the NSX and the Intergra type R. its a shame their downfall was when they changed it from Legend to RL smh. I had a 94 Legend then parted ways when the 04 TL came out and never looked back!!!!
+bee dig Your generation TL(04-08) and the TSX were the last great Acura sedans.. The current Acura lineup doesn't impress me much. Hopefully the new NSX will bring excitement back to Acura.
True. This 2nd generation Legend Coupe(and the sedan) had a badass, "gangsta" look to it. While it lacked RWD and a V8, it made up for it in STYLE. It was sexy. I grew up in North Philly and this Legend coupe(and sedan) and the Infiniti J30(the Infiniti with the round back) were what all the drug dealers in my neighborhood were driving. Today, Acura's styling is boring. If I were in charge of styling, I would give the RLX a round coupe-like roof similar to the Aston Martin Rapide, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7. Reliability isn't enough. They need to make Acura sexy again. Make it gangsta.
Marshall Street that's true bro. Have you seen Honda lately? They are stepping up their game with their new design and technology. Acura should be doing the same and stepping up their game like Honda is doing.
@hitek9wittafulclip Sales took a nosedive with the name change. Honda cannibalized itself with a name like 3.5RL and RL and RLX. They lost identity and direction to the point that the line was cancelled for the US market a week ago.
That year Acura had only 4 models. Integra for younger people, Vigor for someone who wanted a ca nicer than the best Accord, Legend Sedan/Coupe for the older buyer, and NSX for the enthusiast. The brand has completely lost direction and focuses on stupidity like bluetooth, social media apps, iPad/ipod integration, and cellular features to sell their cars when they once had 100% of the focus on the experience of driving the car. Platform sharing with the Honda division is also a part of the downfall. The early Acura cars shared only hardware with Honda branded models. Now they share major components. This coupe was really something special; they just do not make cars like it any longer. The coolest feature on the 2nd gen Legend coupes was the auto close on the doors. You barely just latched it shut and the door would pull itself closed the rest of the way. MW never mentioned it because perhaps they did not know about it at the time.
+texan176 I hear you man. I've owned few Legends back in 90's and can't even look without disappointment at current garbage Honda is making. I don't care how technologically up to date and consumer friendly these cars are . They are NOT in the same league older Acuras were. I drove pretty much every new one lately and they are just very modern but bland, boring, sterilized driving apliances devoid of soul. Every time Acura announces some new or updated model, I look for it in hope that Honda have come to its senses and finally redeems itself, but it never happens. It's sad.
They are actually doing quite well with SUVs. Just not with anything else. The NSX is nice but is just a figureout with tiny limited output that confuse the image of the brand - the lineup of the brand are not sporty and in fact the same shared platforms they have are no faster than the equivalent Honda.
Seeing this review just reminds me of how much Acura has fallen away from it's heritage of sporty luxury brand. Acura was on it's way of becoming a tier-1 luxury sports company and it's simple model of high output engines, high gearing engines, light body weights, and of course, reliability. This is all Acura had to do and it would been a powerhouse today. I will never forget walking on to the Acura dealership and seeing the Legend, Integra G-SR, and NSX. Acura was about performance but of equal importance you were buying reliable-performance (an oxymoron) that didn't need the insane maintenance. Instead, Acura became the American version of Buick. They never offered a V-8, like Lexus did, and there only now introducing transmissions that rival other luxury makers. There styling of being simple and elegant became obtuse and heavy with that beak design that the majority of reviewers didn't like. If they redesigned the RL, it should have the proportions of the Legend. Introduce a turbocharged V-6 and offer it with a 8-speed double clutch. Don't get fancy with it and just offer the basic luxury amenities. Make sure it's light and reliable. Hell call it the RL-Legend edition. The buyers will come.
idk, the legend always seemed like a bloated accord to me. most of the cars they've sold scream 'overpriced rebadged honda' in my opinion. I had a 2003 TL, and it was a nightmare. 2 transmissions and an HVAC system integrated into the nav unit... idk, Acura has been a letdown since day one imo
even though Im younger (28 years old) I recall seeing the Legend as a kid and That was one of the cars that created my love for luxury cars!! I was a timeless design. Even in 2017, if you see a well kept Acura Legend or 1998-2001 Lexus ES300, you still have to stop and look at it!! Especially the Acura. But I will agree with 9890jsp, The 03' TL and the 03Accords were beautiful but trash to deal with! I went though 3 transmissions but I'll say the quality of my Interior on my Accord EX-L was far better quality than half of the new cars on the market!! Honda and Lexus can make a quality LONG LASTING interior!!
I regret selling my 1990 accord ex coupe gorgeous 5 speed Burgundy interior, the Non air bag steering wheel is much more appealing and the tail lights on the 1990 as well. There getting harder to find in good condition. I am also looking for same line up.
Nah I brought a used one for 400$ red 91 coupe with the black weatherbuarg trim \ L *shxt clean asL I get stoppped everyday ppl think it’s a vigor or race car or sumn 😂 they gud cars but I brought it at 200k mikes engine quiet asF my brother brought a 03 Acura Rl and his louder than mines !! 💯 at idle *
But they never were real gauges, even in pickup trucks they often had a gauge and the needle, but they never went off normal unless something was wrong, in other words they were just a complicated Idiot light, the only signaled when something went wrong and took up space on the dash, they hadn't been real gauges since the 60s or 70s. Just a needle that goes to red when something goes bad, why not just have a red light instead if you can't see the something's going wrong before it does. Idiot gauge.
u may b able 2 detect a problem a few seconds quicker with a gauge than a warning light which in the case of oil pressure could b the difference between a fried engine and a saved 1.(if ur paying attention).
Sochiro Honda would roll in his grave if he saw the current offerings from Honda/Acura. It's a big disappointment, Acura was on top in the 90's /early 2000's
My dad had a '93 Vigor LS...midnight grey I think was the colour. Super reliable, even after 540,000 kms on it. Only thing needing replacement was a rear passenger wheel bearing and ignition switch on the column. Even today, those '93 models still look sharp and hold up well. Their new designs...I don't think so, at least not for me. Their front grills look awful, and hard edge lines that to me, don't seem to flow well. Even the new NSX to me, just doesn't speak to me like the original one did in '91 when I was a kid. Maybe I was more impressionable then?
Nice to see my old car, I had a 6-Speed 94 LS which was fantastic. Beautiful styling, and one of the best designed interiors. Seats and Gauges were the best. I graduated to a 98 SC400, which is also great (in a different way). If could, I would have both.
I miss these cars. My brother had a red 4 door, manual. The smell of the leather was lovely and felt like I was riding on a cloud, so smooth and power always on tap. Surely one of my favorite cars growing up. I've been in the coupe and was a bit faster but either choice is great. Can't find an Acura Vigor yet though 5cyl!
+Joseph Rogers I bets are the American management of the North America division that caused this. They need the Japanese to manage the R & D and design again.
+MrMike25896 You can say that again. Everyone wanted one when it came out in 91. A family friend had one until it became a money pit (a 91 5 speed L coupe). I thought it was so awesome back in the day.
This car was definitely an aspirational car. I am and have been a long term, since 1992, Honda product owner. Both Acura and Honda seem to have lost their way since Mr. Honda passed in 1991. I have nearly no doubt that the bean counters and marketing specialists took over and do not allow for much innovation and that dried up the passion. Just look at their line up. A bunch of me-too products. My 2012 Accord Coupe V6 is a me-too car and probably my last Honda. Has it been reliable? Yes. But it has its share of minor problems and annoyances that my early 90s cars never had. Just looking back at this Legend coupe has me yearning for that time again, when Honda was a leader. What a beautiful car.
this 93 was my first car, in gray with the metallic flakes. started my passion for autos. I miss it so much but it definitely isn't a low maintenance vehicle. loved the smell it made burning premium gas too.
MotorWeek has always been one of the most straightforward car review shows, void of all the bullshit and favoritism. SO PLEASE STOP WITH THE FUCKING "CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE" BAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GODDAMN SCREEN Thanks.
This car was so sexy! I wish they would bring back the sporty coupe Legend with AWD and a hybrid/PHEV/EV powertrain. Now that would be a fun to drive commuter for a single guy like me.
what transmission did this thing have? I remember looking in a friend's Legend engine compartment and seeing the engine in a rear wheel drive configuration, but it was front wheel drive. weird, but still a nice looking car.
nicer and drives better and more reliable then any other acura or honda model since i still remember being impressed when i pushed the volume button on the steering wheel it also moved the physical knob on the radio face
I would totally drive one of these things today. Preferably stick shift as I'm sure it's a blast to drive too.. But an auto would probably be smooth as silk and run forever lol. Man, the 90s was a great time for cars.
The reason I'm still a JDM fanboy to this day starts with the early to mid 90s Accord/Legend Coupes. This was my dream car when I graduated in 93... still is when I graduate 😂 This was JDM muscle. They were ahead of their time.. If you look at the body lines & overall style of the car it looks like a 2007 Monte Carlo SS. Sorry Chevrolet you were 14 years late. I'm still driving a 2017 Accord V6 Coupe to this day. When they discontinued the V6 Coupe in 2018 it was the end of an era.. Who knows..maybe they'll re-introduce it finally here in the US properly badged as it was in Japan. Honda Legend
Growin up in Newy York in the 90s, this used to be the dope boy car. Uniform was baggy jeans, timberlands, tommy or carmouflag jacket. Acura legend or LS 400 for the money making ones. They used to down south to the carolina’s or Virginia to buy these cars. I wanted to be them so bad but my pops had a different idea. Forced me into the army and the rest is history. Still got a LS450 and loving it though.
I wish the companies would bring back some of the great names like the Legend. Forget the numbers and simple letter names. Imagine calling your kid S4? S4 is a great car I've had 2 of them. Anyway........
Man for 30 yrs old that car was ahead of it's time & still looks like a sexy modern-esk car as any today. Beautiful car that hardly aged. I'd drive 1 even now if they still were brand new as that 1 presented & as plentiful to find as in '93..maybe not for 35 grand tho.😏
What made this car special is that it had all the advantages of a front wheel drive car, but because the engine was mounted north/south, it didn’t feel like it was front drive most of the time
You guys and me too; one company has success in design and then everyone copies it. I miss the days when cars embraced design and performance instead of being a toaster computer on wheels
I drove a 92 Legend coupe for awhile in the early 2000s. Loved the styling, Unfortunately it was an auto. Power and handling were good but not great. Felt pretty similar to the 1990 Accord I had(as expected). Just looked more stylish.
Back when styling was clean and subdued. I own an 05 TL 6 speed and my best friend has a '10 TL with the SH package and 6 speed. Both of us agree that the nose, or beak, is terrible to look at. The '18 is supposed to be better, but from the photos I've seen, it just looks like everyone else's with no distinction. Take it down a notch car designers and look to your past to see what people really want to buy! Also, a bit of retro badge engineering wouldn't hurt!
Back when Acura and Lexus easily built a fan base off of strong reliable and affordable cars that can the down audi and benz. Then they started comparing to Infiniti and Cadillac and it all went down hill
Old Acuras are better than the newer ones. Today's Hondas and Acuras look almost identical with styling. Until the NSX comes out, Acura is a brand that will suffer in sedan sales, but succeed in Crossover sales.
well the new NSX changed nothing. Who cares about a limited production car that runs in the hundreds per year that costs over 150k. The whole idea of having a flagship is to trickle down that tech to the regular cars that people can afford to buy. In this case, acura has nothing like that.
I tell ppl all the time the 90's were the Japanese golden years. What great cars, it seems the Koreans are riding that golden wave of great products now. Japanese cars are no better or worse than everyone else now. Just proves you have to keep clawing your way if you want to stay number 1. Complacency gets you second place at best.
Korean products are always “cool and trendy,” and very competitive in terms of pricing. Not a bad thing though, but never up to the standards of Japanese products in terms of quality and attention to detail. German on the other hand, well, German cars are actually much better in reliability than before, thanks to the Luxury Japanese brands like Lexus and Acura. However, German somehow put too many complicated and over-engineering parts in their cars, which lead to problems after a few years.
I've always liked the way a Honda drove, on Korean cars I had a 2018 Hyundai Elantra as a rental car for a week, nice car for the trip dont know if I would buy one maybe with a manual transmission

Both Acura and Infiniti have been completely adrift for over 10 years now. A messy lineup of undesirable, indistinguishable vehicles.

Rumor has it that motorweek is still waiting for a volt and oil pressure meter for this car

this 93 was my first car, in gray with the metallic flakes. started my passion for autos. I miss it so much but it definitely isn't a low maintenance vehicle. loved the smell it made burning premium gas too.
MotorWeek has always been one of the most straightforward car review shows, void of all the bullshit and favoritism.
SO PLEASE STOP WITH THE FUCKING "CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE" BAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GODDAMN SCREEN
Thanks.
Unusually nice interior in this car, especially for the time.
Had this exact car when I was a kid!! Very reliable, everything worked until it needed a new top end at 140k. Loved the automatic soft close doors!!!
Owned 3 in the 90's and they were awesome!!!
my good friend still have his 91 or 92 black 4dr legend. Enjoy looking at it (legend) every time I see him
This car was so sexy!
The Legend was a Legend!
Acura legend 6spd, soft close doors, type ll engine. Rare car to find now
2:46 so nobody’s gonna talk about how clean that slalom was
A longitudinally mounted 5cyl fwd car. Honda's engineering was incredible in the 90s.
Did you even watch it?
+Jonathan Altieri Oops! My mistake on the cylinder count.
nicer and drives better and more reliable then any other acura or honda model since i still remember being impressed when i pushed the volume button on the steering wheel it also moved the physical knob on the radio face
Honda was stupid to retire the Legend name!
...93 coup was the best looking car of the 90's!
Car and Driver's verdict on this car was; "A decaf, but a very good decaf"
The best vehicle Acura has made, excluding the NSX. Driving that year's Legend was a dream.
I just hope there are plenty of these retro reviews for years to come.
My father-N-Law had the 1991 version and he had almost 300,000 trouble free miles when he sold it to someone else, very well made cars.
When Acura was at the top of their game!
...........22 years later & it looks better then lots new cars on the road. This design Aged so well omg.
This was my favorite car in the 90s and it's still looks good after 25 something years
SWAGG baby, SWAGG
I wish the companies would bring back some of the great names like the Legend. Forget the numbers and simple letter names. Imagine calling your kid S4? S4 is a great car I've had 2 of them. Anyway........
Man for 30 yrs old that car was ahead of it's time & still looks like a sexy modern-esk car as any today. Beautiful car that hardly aged. I'd drive 1 even now if they still were brand new as that 1 presented & as plentiful to find as in '93..maybe not for 35 grand tho.😏
What made this car special is that it had all the advantages of a front wheel drive car, but because the engine was mounted north/south, it didn’t feel like it was front drive most of the time
Love Hondas, but I'll take the Lexus SC.
+Patrick Simmons haha you probably are one you fucking creep
Just take both
@@patricksimmons395 watch your language.
Those seats look so comfortable
These were underrated cars, back then. Saw a few as a kid in the late 90s.
They must have the same guy designing all the new cars nowadays because they all look the same. I miss the individuality of these cars.
+HeavilyArmedGoy It is nice to know someone agrees.
You're not the only one that thinks that.
You're not the only one that thinks that.
You guys and me too; one company has success in design and then everyone copies it. I miss the days when cars embraced design and performance instead of being a toaster computer on wheels
Other than maybe the nSx, this was the best looking Acura of all time.
Had one of these at the garage super rare 6 spd as well what a car
I encourage all Acura fans to check out Tyson Hugie's TH-cam channel.
I'm always surprised how good these cars look in reality. They do look much better up close than in videos.
The legend is beautiful! If it was rwd it would've slayed the competition
Do you guys have the '88-'92 Toyota Corolla sedan? or even the sr5 or gts? (ae92) That would be awesome! Thanks!
Picking a manual transmission was a very wise decision those years.
These rare sexy cars. Even rarer 6spd config. Goodness. Even the SC300 in manual form is just as rare. I want one of them. Doesn't even matter.
I saw this car as a teenager wishing one day i can buy..never did bought one but bought a Lexus LC 500 Atomic Silver instead.
I always loved the alloys on the Legend coupe....
One of my dream cars
Did you ever get to the W220 you told me you put on the "list" in September of last year? Just reminding you, haha.
Back when Acura and Lexus easily built a fan base off of strong reliable and affordable cars that can the down audi and benz. Then they started comparing to Infiniti and Cadillac and it all went down hill
Thats a beautiful car. Easily more attractive than todays pickings.
That interior is beautiful
I just purchased a 93 Legend sedan for cheap with 131k on it. That and my 98 GS300 are now my everything. lol
One of my favorite car when I was a teenager
Why does the rear end look like its going to jump out of the car when accelerating?
I would love to see the Vigor review!
Had this car in a 95 LSS type 2 .,,,loved it ...needed more room and went to TL for the back seat, was never a legend.
2:10 -- MotorWeek had their very own Stig!
What do you need a volt meter and oil pressure gauge for???
That back is beautiful
When is there going to be retro review for the SC300 and/or SC400?
Would love to see one in its prime!
Even today I still love that car still fast low 15s on the quarter mile
this was cool. sweet car. they don't have any nice models like this now.
