James May crossing his meccano bridge in Liverpool across the Mersey (actually a canal). He's nuts! lol...what a star! He then crosses his bridge, but cheats with a harness.
If you are american, you might know them as Erector, they were popular in the 70s and 80s. If that still doesn't ring a bell, then it is like crossing a bridge made of Legos... that's the demography that these toys are originally targeted for.
It was still Meccano, but most that would recall that are are in their seventies to eighties; Meccano was the Lego of the day back in 1935-55. Erector was the American knock off.
@TheG645 I'm not sure if you ever used Meccano, but it is normally used for making bridges that are no more than 20-30cm. What James May did was usthe very same meccano, but lots of it, to make a massive bridge. Pity he had the safety harness, I'd have loved to see him tumble into the canal if the test had failed.
This thing was way overbuilt, could have used half as much material and still worked. For a carpenter who walks across 2x4s all day this would be a walk in the park.
20 feet high? As James said in the book, the bridge was 20 feet above the water level of the canal, and the water level of the canal is low enough that falling in would be like falling onto concrete. From 20 feet high. If you can't imagine it, I would suggest going there for oneself, then you can appreciate the scale. For the record, I have done so.
What am I looking at? Some old man uses a very strange and wonky bridge to cross a very narrow canal with relatively clean water on a pretty low height though still uses a harness... Did I miss something? Oh yeah, he's famous, it changes everything.
Come off it, I mean, I'm a bit drunk, but that wasn't very impressive. I mean I could do that. Just the other day I was walking down Cobbler Creek, and there was a torrent about 7 ft across that stopped me in my tracks. So I got a big stick from the path, heaved it across the stream, and crossed that rickety branch like a champion. And who was there to film me? Certainly not BBC. And I bed I had a lot more fun that James. Ah well, I can't say I wasn't entertained enough to watch the whole video. Pretty impressive I guess, but then, it is only mechano.
@@jpptubie It certainly is, I'm not unimpressed. I just thunk that it was a bit funny how serious they all were about it. But at the same time, I had no back story for this video. For all I know it could have been a school competition to construct a Mechano bridge capable of carrying a human being.. If that's the case, this is impressive. If adult human beings were responsible, it leaves something to be desired, I think.
I am Ausie to m8 - Meccano is wha t I played with in my childhood 1960's - I am now an Engineer , building bridges in China now - because of Meccanno _ :) well worth giving to your children as a xmas present - imho
What is the point of this? The wandells went across 3 of the 7 wonders of the world without a safety line. Must be a UK thing. LOOK I walked over a puddlelmao
Who tf is this guy? And why is it so special to cross a bridge? Why is there such a crowd for some old man crossing a bridge? edit: WHY IS SOMEONE CRYING???
-Be proud!
-Bugger off.
Love James May!
" It's not about me, it's about Mec-AH-no. "
Can they stop switching camera every half second. I'm getting sea sick.
if only Richard and Jeremy were there they'd be fucking with him so much lol
yeah, it's like there's something missing to perfect this video, the two bullying him hahaha
Matt Allen Agreed
"Head up, shoulders back, be proooud!"
"Bugger off." xD

Both names are stupid as hell tbh. Should be Mechano. Instead it reads like Mecca No. Thank no on remembers them anymore.
@@KandiKlover Meccano was French iirc.
@@mileskosik472 Hardly. It was made in Binns Road, Liverpool, by Frank Hornby. And No, I didn't need wiki for that...
Currently made in France. Not originally French.
The James May series is very good. They made a full size Airfix spitfire last time - can't wait for next weeks!
I've changed my mind, i don't wanna to go to Liverpool.
I always liked Manchester!!
Liverpool is way better than Manchester
They're both shitholes
mrmoo exactly
Fred Schriks Yeah we heard him
Fred Schriks who can blame him, Manchester is the greatest city on earth
Isn't it ironic that there was a Dacia ad before the video?
Josh Milligan Great news!
Nope not for me
You don’t seem to know what irony is.
That's marketing done right😂 it's a dacia!!
James May is the most interesting person... pause... in the world!
The most interesting boring person in the world.
I would not worry at all.
The water below seemed quite clean.
The Adventures of James May
Isn't this the guy that had a Lego house
+Easton Hammond Yes he is
I was pretty sure
“The guy” 😂😂
It's a ''The chick''. XD XD
How the bloody hell you don't know?

Gotta love James May!
Well, he is Captain Slow
I love his little "eeehhnn" sound
There's a slope at that side of the bridge.....
It's definitely higher on that side
Im extremely happy I understand this reference
@@mrridley8967 I understood that reference
We've only just started to play with meccano :)
Real men don't use harnesses. Apart from when they do.
He is cool , but fear is not there with a harness on
Captain slow crosses the slowest bridge man has ever made.
JonatasAdoM ......... in the World
Basically a toy bridge I assume?
That's Edwina Currie, for some reason.
That's one small step for HU-MUNs, One giant leep, naw it's been done! hehe!!!

Y U NO FALL?
no really the lads who made this are very good and have an amazing future ahead of them.
Pfff! That’s nothing.... make an IKEA bridge and walk across it, now that’d be impressive
I absolutely love the fact that the bridge forms a J (Or more of an L?)
Y is this 9years old and they just r releasing it on spark rn
Atkins was involved! Very impressive.

Brits: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
It's entertainment - allegedly.

He was in a harness what the hell was he scared of? Also why was Edwina Curry there ?
Hugh Smith
She’s not waiting on you.
Is that your source of angst.
I was thinking of knex and got very confused for a second
If u hate James may, ur not human!
I am surpised they dint have to time lapse so the could record mr slowys movement
Meccano is f###ing expensive....how much would that have cost?
is that mother may?
Good job everyone. 👍☺👍
I wish they built a proper bridge
i mean , love james may , but the whole thing was made as if he was walking between 2 skyscrappers , ive seen kids walk along walls higher than that.

Wow, such useless negativity.
Eric Tselovanskyi
If it’s any comfort, you could have done the same thing without a harness and no one would have cared.
@@daviddalton9214 that's exactly my point
Wash your mouth out you nonce, that is our English King James May
So many people showed up to watch a guy cross a bridge...
iirc they helped build it.
Ive been there
She looks like his wife!
Why always james may use that blue t-shirt
Would've been much quicker to use the other bridge right next to it.
that womans got a sexy accent (Edwina currie?) i thinks her name

It'm made of 100,000s of pieces of meccano that's normally used to make bridges maybe 20cm, not 29m; Its quite a feat.
