    I heard a lot about the modular scams as well. Kerry Tarnow is probably the best TH-cam channel that introduces modular products from various builders in NA and Europe. His videos are very well researched.

    Hello Carlos and Laura from a fellow Oakvillian and Micalense. I am moving back to the island next year and will be building there. I have been framing new builds in wood or heavy guage metal for 30+ years. Pretty sure any wood or steel structure fastened down with hurricane roof clips and wall strapping directly to foundation would easily handle any wind loads. I also believe that by building from scratch instead of modular can be just as cheap and almost as fast as a modular build. Giving you the ability to build whatever style home you like. The exterior finishes could also be mix of stucco, wood or hardie board which is very durable. I usually build the shell of a 2500-3000 sq. ft build in 4 weeks. Interior finishing depending on your tastes would be a month or so. I remember watching you guys do your reno there and was pulling my hair out. Much easier way to do some jobs. Contact me if you would like a lakeshore lunch on me.

      Thank you so much for sharing this, Manny. We are trying to learn as much as we can about not only this type of build, but also about how things are done, materials etc. I also welcome any information that comes directly from someone that really knows about building this type of structures. I would love to have a conversation with you at some point. Here is my email, hopefully we can connect in Oakville. Take care!

    If you do use wood, it MUST be pressure treated with insect resistant chemicals. Soft woods and any plywood are absolute candy for termites. If you have the only house built of candy in the neighbourhood, the termites will be calling.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is correct! I mention on the video that all reputable companies use Industry accepted treated wood, they must have proper quality codes. This also means that they only use real wood, not ply wood or any other type of imitation wood. Then it's up to you to treated as recommended by the company. If you follow this road, this wood units will last a long time, and the termites will have to find somewhere else to live. Really appreciate you taking the time, take care!

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Yes, I noticed you did give that very good advice. I just wanted to confirm that it is absolutely necessary. I had to replace a wall (installed by the previous owner) that I found with a large colony of termites living inside. I replaced it with 2 drywall panels that they cannot eat and placed sound insulation inside. I hope that solved my problem, but only time will tell. Fortunately the wood used in the structural elements is teja, an extremely dense type of pine (It nearly sinks in water) that the termites hate. After more than 150yrs, this wood still has a very sticky sap that termites find difficult to live with. It's hell on my power tools too. Most walls are 50cm thick and made of stone, finished with a calcium based morter. Nice because it also acts as an insulation that can hold warmth in winter and stay cool in summer. In Canarias, I do not need either heating or air conditioning... so far, although temperature minimums and maximums have creeped up 4°C during the last 10 years. Temperature range used to be 11 to 27°C. Last year that was 15 to 31.

    Hi, Great idea. Are modular homes available on all islands?

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Ana! I want to thank you again for buying a couple of coffees, really appreciate it. The answer to your question is yes, they can be shipped to all islands. Just keep in mind that you will have to submit your project(what you want to build) to the local town, for approval(building permits). I will also add that building modular wood or lsf homes is pretty new, so you wont find loads of them. Take good care, thanks again.

    Love your channel. The content is great.
    Q: Why are there so many properties for sale on Terceira? Just causallly browsing for sale listing, there seems to be a disproportionate number of properties for sale on Terceira. Is there any reason?
    I'm leaning towards Sao Jorge(in spite of the "rumblings) because from what I've learned, so far, the pace of life there more resembles the "good ole days" on the Azores. 😅
    Planning an extended (3 months at least) visit sometimes (not set yet) in 2025, hopefully spring or early summer. I do plan on coming straight to Pico to see you guys!
    Charles
    Ps.. what is your tentative schedule for staying in the islands next year?

      We're glad you enjoy the channel, it means a lot. I did see quite a bit more inventory than usual on most islands. The island of Terceira is the 2nd most populated, they always have more to choose from than the other 7. At the moment, we are looking to go back at the end of November. We will most likely stay until May or June...not 100%. You can always email me when you are getting close to deciding to go. Cheers! thetravelguys@picoholidayexperts.com

    Building what we want to escape? No thanks. I am rebuilding/renovating a traditional house, with traditional materials, just as you are. I will not upset the traditional architecture with styles that change the character of the island. I couldn't ever do that. Fit it in, or don't build it. The last thing I wanted was to live in an American suburb! Wood south of Scandanavia is almost unknown in Europe. Many consider a wood house inferior and a fire hazard. Banks may not even loan money for a "temporary structure". Wood construction is not thought of as permant. Some town planners may not even know what category they fit into. It may take them an extra year just to decide that. If you like wood, Scandinavia is calling.

      Totally understand your point & position. This is why I mentioned on the video that this type of build is not for everyone. I believe in various types of builds, especially the ones with low footprint. It's also a good thing that wood & lsf builds are becoming more mainstream and authorized by local Governments. Take good care, and good luck with the rebuild. Cheers!
