Fabulous chat - thanks Georgie and Mel for taking the time to film this. Inspirational listening to someone who is living the dream 📚 Good to hear the reality of the work involved and the mindset needed.
Thankyou so much Abigail xxx
Thank you both. Such a generous helpful inspirational chat. 😊 I’ve written a novel. It took me seven years. I wrote the whole thing on an iPad 😂Train stations, coffee shops and waiting in cars for school pick ups were my offices. You’ve inspired me to finish my trilogy. Lovely stuff.
wonderful - good luck! x
I hope that you can go ahead and have it published, after all the work it takes to write? xxx
@@jillychandler thank you. Hopefully one day! I generally struggle with the “getting it out there phase”
What a lovely conversation..thank you
You’re so welcome x
This was wonderful. Thank you. I do a lot of my “writing” while swimming laps. Some I can remember; some not so much. Other times, ideas come just as I’m falling asleep. I do keep a pen and pad on the nightstand. 😊
sounds great x
Thanks Georgie - sending this link to a friend who’s written a book and is in the aaargh stage trying to learn about how to get published. Lovely chat❤
Please do! and good luck to them xxx
You have to start with an absolute love of books, before you can ever write one, because it takes that love and respect of them to propel you forward. Remember though with everything in life, you can give it 99% and not be successful, it is that 1% of just plain luck that makes all the difference. Right book at the right time sort of thing. Georgie as long as you put yourself into whatever book you write, you will have success. I for one will be one of the first in line to purchase it:).
True - books have to be the thing first - and then it’s just giving it your best shot - in a strategic focused way xxx
Lovely chat - inspiring for not just writing - need to think how to get some of both of your confidence and daring!
thank you and good luck! x
Thank you - just ordered Mel’s Cornish mysteries for my Kindle.
Thank you!
Just bought Melanie’s Cornish mystery on kindle looking forward to reading it..such an interesting chat thanks for introducing us to your friend. Very inspiring. Please write your book Georgie I want to read it 📖Interesting to hear about imposter syndrome still featuring in Melanie’s mind. As an artist it’s the inner critic that shouts. 💐
brilliant! enjoy xxx
Thanks to this video, and my love of books, I am reading The Wedding Tree at the moment. What a lovely lady the author is, and you too of course, as that goes without saying. I have always loved writing stories, and keep a journal every night. I would love to have a book published, but it is such hard work to do so, I wonder if I ever will? I also write poetry, as my Mother did before me. Blessings and love from a sunny West Devon, and Jilly & Madge the rescue greyhound. xxx
So pleased you enjoyed this x
You are a true Renaissance woman...kudos for following your passion. But please don't give up your flowers because I so enjoy your flower farm videos ; )
promise the flowers are here for good - they are my bread and butter x
Oh, and Georgie and others, there is a book called "Hancox A house & family", about a Tudor hall house deep in the Sussex countryside (non fiction by the way). It is a really good read. written by Charlotte Moore.
Ooh will look it up Thankyou x
Lovely. Thank you both. Love Elizabeth Von Armin. Have you read Willa Cather? American novelist with a style that is simple but rich. Try Shadows on the Rock, The Professor’s House and Death Comes for the Archbishop. ❤️
I haven’t. Thank you for the recommendation and I’ll have a look
it's years since I read Willa Cather - I should look them out again - yes beautiful writing x
you'll love them @melaniehudson5190 x
It's a funny old business, the book trade. Writers of literary fiction get respect from critics, but not much dosh. Writers of commercial fiction often get a lot more dosh, but no respect from those same critics, who sneeringly regard them as lowbrow. It's rather like being a chef. Would you be happy flipping burgers at McDonalds, or would you prefer to keep your self- respect, and whip up masterpieces at Maxim's? I read an interview with Jilly Cooper - a very wealthy woman now, from years of selling her frivolous, horsey books - and she said she absolutely yearned for a glowing review from The Guardian, but had to face the painful truth, that she would never get one. So, no one has it all! It seems to me, that the best way to coin it in as a writer, is to find a pushy agent who will sell the film rights of your book. Authors can then sit back and watch their book sales soar, once the film is made. And as we all know, the film is never as good as the book! John Le Carre lamented, that 'seeing your novel turned into a film, is rather like watching your favourite cow turned into a bouillon cube.' Torture!
As I scribble away, I have a few inspiring quotes on my wall to spur me on.
John Mortimer, the Rumpole of the Bailey author, wrote - 'The only rule I have found to have any validity in writing, is not to bore yourself.' And Barry Humphries said it so well - 'I've always thought, if it will amuse me, it will amuse others - that's my golden rule.'
love those quotes - and yes - the challenge of finding a middle way to make a living from the pen is one that will keep many of us puzzling possibly all our lives x
Wonderful chat. Georgie, could you please listen to the video and see if it meets your audio standards. Is the sound a bit "blurrier" than in your old studio. Love your channel and don't like to miss a word! Thank you.
yes this clip was made before we really started moving in and I think as the luggage starts arriving the sound will improve - someone had the brilliant idea of lining the underneath of tables with egg boxes which I plan to do x
Melanie, fate was on your side that evening. Your talent was spotted in that first book then chatting to the lady from HP , was all the reward you needed
Thanks ❤
The challenge is to spot the opportunities and make the most xxx
You are very focused Mel and courageous x
sod fate. Work hard, step up, turn up and keep going.
What do you think about the current dialogue around the decline of traditional writing and publishing and the rise of online writing on various platforms like Medium or Substack?
I don’t know what Georgie thinks but perhaps any regulated (i.e. vetted for hate speech) platform that gives a voice to those that wouldn’t necessarily be heard traditionally might be a good thing?
I have a novelist freind. AI took over her online writing job=gone. The other, wellA I was stealing from her articles so she quit that one. I am sure AI is entering the field of ficiton novels, but like art..the truly in tune can figure it out. The real readers think.
@@joannbaumann4028 it is a serious concern for all of us for sure.
Such a good question - the challenge is to publish well edited… however one chooses to do it the choice must be backed with the most good information to support the writer £££ xxx
Dementia comment...oh dear😢
It is what it is x
Dear Georgie, please, please sort your micing out. Just get outdoors/outdoors collar mics. It will make *such* a difference for listeners, esp for those of us with hearing impairment. Please do us a favour. I know you don't like spending money - but sound quality really does matter. Your new studio is even more echoing than the last. --- Not 'everyone' in the world can "run their own businesses" writing their own successful books. If you are living in a violent slum in Rio? If you have eight kids and huge debt? If you have assorted disabilities; are homeless; can't read? I agree that many of your own listeners will benefit from encouragement to build their confidence, but please don't generalise to the world population who are facing huge personal battles and uphill struggles just to get through their day. Your video work will get better and better the more specific and careful you are in what you say.
Yes I know I need to pad the new studio a bit - v good advice from one person was egg cartons stuck under the table - it is very echoing at the moment - I need to unpack and hang some stuff - one follower suggested one of my Mums quits which I think a brilliant idea x
Oh dear Lord Firefly...she cannot cater to, nor address all the "ills" of the entire planet. She is a flower farmer in Somerset, not part of NATO. Most likely those living in a violent slum in Rio are not looking for flower farming or book writing content. I have no problem with sound quality either, why? because I expect wind outside, and I expect an empty building to have an echo.
@@user-os7om7ef9k and soon it will be all arranged and teacake’s basket will absorb some hollowness in sound and we’ll all be happier - especially teacake xxx
@@user-os7om7ef9k I don't agree. Georgie said: "everybody could run their own business if they wanted to. Everybody could be self-employed. We can all do all
of these things. All we have to do is dare. We have to DARE it you have to want
it and take it seriously". Georgie has over 33000 subscribers. Not all of those will be planning their own flower farm. I live in one of the most deprived area of the UK. Lots of people would here love to learn how to grow. And for very many of those it's not a matter of "just daring". Julia Cameron takes this line in the Artist's Way - it's just a matter of god and courage. My point is nothing to do with solving the world's problems or to do with Nato. It's about considering carefully before making statements that don't hold. The whole point of the internet, and TH-cam, is that you have a huge reach across the globe. I would hope that Georgie isn't aiming the channel at "people like me".
I forward Georgie's videos to local people interested in growing. And to people in horticulture groups and to newbies. I think she gives valuable content and good insight and I hope this is open and aimed at everyone, not just a Country Life set. I do think that TH-cam creators more used to traditional media can forget that people in Africa and Bangladesh and Perus are watching too. Encouragement and enthusiasm is great, but consider your watchers. All over the world.
@@FireflyOnTheMoon Dear Lord Firefly, I stand firmly by my original answer to you. Obviously you have much time on your hands, to take it upon yourself to write such long replies. She is just ONE WOMAN, doing her best at what she does best. She makes so many happy=but she will NEVER make everyone happy. It's not her fault whatever is happening in England or around the world. Chill out Firefly, just enjoy the videos:).
