This was just the video I needed, coming into 10th edition and never having played a game. Been a fan of the Lore for years and now I'm ready to get some Dark angels painted and deployed :)

As someone who's played 40K for nearly 25 years I would definitely say pick a Chapter that you enjoy the lore and theme of, for me that's taken me from Black Templars (my own Crusade force), Ultramarines 4th Company (Ventris and Co) and after a significant gap (10+ years) started my own home made Chapter, an all Primaris Sons of Dorn force in late 8th Edition, making some background and designing my own Chapter symbol and colour scheme is another level where i get enjoyment from telling a story that is uniquely mine.
Rule of cool trumps everything!
Space Marines Guide:
1. Start collecting and painting your dream army
2. Play some friendly games in you local gaming store
3. Figure out almost everyone collects and plays space marines
5. Hope for someone to bring xenos or chaos to play against (nobody does)
5. Get tired of mirror matches
7. You start collecting Xenos/Chaos
Yo so yesterday I played my first match in 10th edition against my friend and this random guy comes up to us and goes “wow is that tau?!?!” And I go “yea, and my friend has tyranids” and the random guy says “yea I just got into warhammer and when I come I like to see people play because I don’t really know how to play and everyone either has space marines or some sort of demon army. I have seen tyranid a few times but your the first tau player I have seen.” And I was thinking about it and yea, it’s just me and another guy who plays tau but he recently switched over to votaan 😂
Valrak likes castles and therefore chose to play Imperial Fists.
i chose the Black Templars as my main army because i like to burn witches.

My biggest difficulty with space marines is that every chapter sounds super cool to some extent 😅. I’ve been staring at my leviathan marines for two weeks now…
black templars for the win
You might as well do a custom color scheme and then collect models you like after that you can always switch up which company you like to play even tho you don't have the matching colors. Don't think that anyone will judge you if your black Templars are more looking like silver templars or such :)

My advice is to make your own custom chapter. Part of the joy of the hobby is also to have a unique looking army while it tailors to your play style.

I brought a pack of assault intercessors and painted each one a different colour scheme, during that journey I found I like my green model the most so I linked it to the green factions which landed me choosing a dark angels army
I pick blood angel because of the lore, the heroes, and how they are vampires, and the one thing I like this the death company with the black armor with the red crosses on their shoulders or legs, running into battle just to die and how they are considered they are lost bother to the other blood angel. and also I like the colour red and primarch sanguinius is a badass
I love the Black Templars chapter because I'm a drooling fanatic.
I bought the Leviathan space marines, for pretty cheap. This is the first Imperial army/collection I have, I decided to paint them as Imperial Fists, partly because of you
Pallet cleanser are a great idea as well, in between painting my dark angels I’ll painting something completely different to mixed things up for me

Hey Valrak, I've been into 40k for about 3 years now, not much compared to many here but after exploring many chapters for a Space Marines army I've finally fully committed to an Imperial Fists army that I would have never have thought would bring me nearly as much joy to build and paint. They are so often overlooked by more out there chapters. Your enthusiasm and results with your models were probably influential in my decision. I am looking forward to finally play them in 10th edition!

I love Flesh Tearers lore and have a some vanguard models painted up. However, I painted up Helbrecht and and will probably do up my Leviathan marines as Black Templar...exceptions being the phobos lieutenant and Librarian
The librarian terminator is what convinced me to go from BT to my own custom chapter

Great advice for new players, thats exactly how I started an HQ (Chaplain on a bike) and Combat Patrol box (Blood Angels).
The Chaplain didn't really work well with anything in the CP but I quickly got units he did work with, and most importantly I thought he looked cool as hell
And +1 on choosing the chapter you love most, colour scheme, Primarch, lore, personality, preferred weapons and fighting style.

I started my Imperial Guard recently and the painting aspect is very interesting. There's a lot of little spaces with the new models and there's always something new to find that you may not have noticed at first.
Great video Valrak! For anyone who was like me and struggled to pick a Chapter give the Death Watch a go! You can customise your army with your favourite Chapters and it’s a kitbashers dream!

Your video is exactly what I would tell people, I am first and foremost a Son of Sanguinius, and no matter how many times the meta shift and it seems like my boys in red or turquoise (Atlantean Spears) or white (Blood Scythes) get beaten down again and again by factions like Tau. It doesn't matter to me, at the end of the day this is my chapter and I feel at home with the Angels. I feel like this is first and foremost an important point to bring to someone when they want to get into Space Marines.
TLDR; find where you fit in and stick with it because i guarantee that at the end of the day win or loose that love for the chapter and the hobby will still be with you
I think that Reading/Watching Lore Videos on chapters that interest you is the best advice in picking your faction.
I started out as Iron Hands because I liked their ascetic and the idea of kitbashing, but the lore didn't pull me in.. I started reading about the Horus Heresy and Read The First Heretic book thought the Word Bearers was for me but after painting a squad of troops I was not impressed with the red paint and almost considered dropping the hobby without ever playing a game.
I had alot of Primaris models when I bought into Iron Hands and I decided it could be a fun project to convert them into Emperor's Children/Soul Drinkers after painting one of the outrider bikes in Phoenician Purple and I haven't looked back since.
Thanks for the video, Valrak. I was going to go SoB (probably still will eventually) but I fell in love with Grey Knights because of their lore and I wanted to play an army of Psykers (my favourite thing in 40K) and finding out about Kaldor Draigo basically being Doom Guy was all I needed to hear to be sold. Though one day Deathwatch might be cool too because of Eisenhorn book 1 and the Corvus Blackstar being a fantastic model.
As an Iron Warriors man myself its strange that I like this channel so much!

I couldnt choose at first so i chose deathwatch so i could experiment with certain chapter models. When tenth came i am starting Dark angels with it because well I love cool swords and mideval knights
As a new purchaser of models, the most daunting task is the painting. So iv been searching for a chapter that I not only like the lore of, but are incredibly easy to paint 😂
as i write this im finishing work on my black templars combat patrol, only the crusader squad left to do, and, its been a ton of fun to paint all these guys, im gald i finaly got the time to propperly get in to the hobby side
I chose the Red Wolves as my unknown founding chapter as I wanted a lesser known chapter and an almost blank canvas in the lore, and it was great to see them mentioned in the new leviathan lore.
Iron Warriors are perfect for beginners very easy to paint! Black primer, dry brush whole model with leadbelcher wash with agrax earth shade and dry brush again with leadbelcher and your done! (Go for HH marines) don't even need to do the eyes just leave them black primed or just put nuln oil on them and hazard stripes aren't needed or if you really want hazard stripes then paint them on a small part
Time for the Blood Ravens to make a comeback. Been preparing an army for this occasion.
Exactly what I'm doing Valrak. I've been out of the game for a long time miniature wise, but I'm easing back into it. Looking to get a Salamanders army at some point, but first project is painting a mini for each of my friends.
Started with Blood Angels. Proceeded to get Black Legion, Sisters of Battle, Adeptus Mechanicus. Conquest magazine came out so did Ultramarines and Death Guard for my 2 boys. Got my Wife Aeldari and Druhkari. Then did Black Templars, Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights, Tau Empire, Thousand Sons, Leagues of Votaan, Tyranids and World Eaters. Just started a Imperial Fist army.Looking forward to Emperors Children coming out lol. My advice, pick what you think is cool and go nuts!!! Been down this rabbit hole for 25 years and i will keep on digging

I started collecting space marines a month ago. It's my third army, and the main thing about my space marines is conversions. I can't do much with my tau and necrons, but it's really fun to kitbash models with a 3D printed bits to create a primaris scale crusade style Dark Angels space marine and painting them in old pre-heresy colors

I have been on the hobby for over a decade and some of my advice is similar to Valrak:
- Try to enjoy the lore and dig in because you will surely find a Chapter, Legión o any faction that speaks to you. We Are spoiled for choice in 40k: battle nuns, super soldiers, evil super soldiers, cosmic horror bugs, ancient robots, elfs...
- Start small, you can alwais buy the next model next week.
- Paint only to your liking, you may enjoy putting a lot of efort in each model or you may prefer to have your army battle ready and play. Is your army, you decide when they are good enough
- Don't follow the meta. Try to play the army you play because you like the faction. If you really like your faction the meta won't matter, you will have soo much to enjoy. And it feels good when you win with an underdog army, belive me, I play DG.

I just created a new custom chapter. They are “The Wayward” colloquially but their name is “The Order of Dorn” so obviously IF successors.

I like playing ultramarines just because of how much it triggers people and they have great HH lore
I'm getting back into 40k after a 25yr hiatus. I've always poked my head in from time to time to see what was going on in the hobby. Then last year, I discovered primaris marines had come out, and I had to just paint one. Now, I'm fully committed to putting together an army and participating in this year's Armies on Parade, of which I've chosen Salamanders. To be honest, before I even looked into their lore, I was in love with the bright green color (huge Green Lantern comic fan) and dragon iconography. But their lore and personality just sells them as true heroes of the Imperium to me.
Amazing video, mad respect for how useful this is going to be for newer players. Unfortunately, for myself, I have a bunch of firstborn sets (I prefer them, shoot me), and seeing as GW is gearing towards Primaris, those sets are probably going to obsolete. Therefore, I'm not really looking to learn playing 40k anymore like I used to, maybe kill team though. At the moment, I'm more likely to learn 30k? Or even Old World or AoS (specifically Warcry) 🤔
I started collecting my marines a few months before 10th edition and I've painted a entire incursion size force as White Scars. Was unaware that they weren't in new addition as of yet. Hopefully that changes. Gladius Task Force is pretty nice though
I have a Dark Angels and a Space Wolves Combat Patrol both waiting to join the Blood Angels. :)

Something I’m glad I did from the start, was not going with a dedicated “chapter” instead I had my own Battle grey battle brothers, who I could play as any faction, I’ve built them as blood angles,codex marines, templars, dark angles by just adding in some models to fit the need, while keeping the theme of my own guys.
It’s a fun way to play the field, while also saving some cash and having a good time with my factions lore.
Glad to be getting back into this with my kids, after a 15 year break
I've chosen a similar route, but I picked an established Chapter whose gene-seed lineage us unknown, allowing me to potentially play any Chapter rules but still having it rooted in already established lore.
I would recommend the Horus Heresy Age of Darkness boxset. Two Praetors which can be made Captains, 4x10 tactical squads, 1 Contempor Dreadnaught, 1 Spartan Assault Tank and 10 Catephatii Terminators
im new , for now i like necrons for there technologies and there ridiculous weapons and stubborn heads , i also love the ultra marines since efficiency and doing procedures right is something that i really like

I started reading lore about the other chapters, then I started looking up Abaddon lore... now I'm a chaos player through and through
I unfortunately threw myself way too fast and too deep and started with a faction that I didn’t like, so now I’m taking my time to relook at the chapters and the new models to see what I really like, not what I convinced myself to like.
My first chapter was the Black Templars because I a devout Catholic and Crusades Enjoyer, so Black Templars were a natural match. Since then I also created my own Chapter, The Gray Hussars, which are a BT successor, but are like German Aristocrats in Space
Big fan of lore before, wanted to go into tabletop with 10th edition. I love the Iron warriors (i know, maybe not the best place to say that x) ) but even more the Loyalists Iron Warriors like Dantioch. I want to do an officially Iron Hand chapter, because the rules matches better for all the dreadnought and tanks i want, but they really comes from the IW that came to Maccrage with Dantioch, the Iron Mask Chapter. Since i'm a big lore fan i already made a lot of stories and i want, down the line, to do a Chaos Space Marine army of IW that are traitors that left the Iron Mask after the truth of their Geneseed was revealed, creating a civil war in the chapter and causing the loyalist to engage in a Penance Crusade. Their geneseed is only known to the Chapter itself and the Officio Assassinorum and in exchange for their silence they sometime use the Iron Mask as diversions, strike team or to open up a fortified place for the assassins to enter.
Best way to choose a chapter is to find the ones you like the lore you like the most. Or just puck your favorite brand and use the same colors

I have thought about either a Night Lords or World Eater decendent Chapter. Yes I know its not canon true. But Imperial Fist could also be. But I really like the first two and they could surely reflect something I like. Scary guys But somewhat reflect get things done

Me, im a very well spoken individual with extreme levels of loyalty and integrity with a zeal for choosing the morally correct thing. Also i spin out and go ultra sick on people who have slighted me or disrespected me or my family and friends. I can get to the point where only death with pay for tue slight i have perceived against me or my family and friends/chapter.
Thus i collect blood angels.

Also cool that stacking two Marine Combat Patrols gets you to Incursion level for 40K.
If you like Roggal Dorn, start with Sons of the Pheonix. They are totally the purest gene lineage of Dorn.
Got a problem tbh. Iron hands check the boxes but without cool lore, is it worth it to ignore it or are the imperial fists for example or salamanders «cooler» to play as because of the ongoing lore? I want to play the wh40k universe and learn stuf about the lore and so on... any help maype?
Im intresting in painting blood ravens from dawn of war, I know recomendations are to play them as a subfaction to ultramarines, but can I instead play them as dark angels? or would people take offense from that?
What do I do when of all the chapters I love the Death Watch the most and that’s the one everyone says to not start as a newbie :( do I just buy/print some bits to make them my own?
I chose Dark Angels because they stubbornly refuse to admit defeat and "Loyalty is it's own reward", as well as their knightly aesthetics.
I then chose the Marines Errant as I love their colour scheme and how they crusade out into the darkness beyond the galaxy in the Emperor's name!

how does one gather "rules" for a homebrew chapter? I assume you'd just pick the rules from whichever available chapter that has rules and apply them to yours? Or is there like a "pick and choose" system, where you can select a number of rules for your own chapter, though I'd say that'd be a bit messy, balance-wise?
Paint how you want and play them as Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Dark Angels etc, mate.
I was collecting space marines before but I bought too much of them at once and burned myself out so I went to guard and Eldar and I love them but I always wanted to do a custom space marine chapter that works with my main armies both guard and Eldar and even tau. I was actually thinking about making them secretly iron warrior gene seed chapter with only my guard, Eldar, and Tau homebrew armies knowing it while also making a homebrew chaos space marine warband and a custom hive fleet for tyranids as the villains for fun. Any of that makes any sense lore wise or should I try a different approach. I want to respect the lore while having fun my armies. Also my space marines are mostly firstborn but with Gdubs having a hate boner for firstborn it kinda bugged me and I just shelved them for now. What should I do? IRON WITHIN WARSMITH VALRAK.
