In Maldives there is a resort island called Giraavaru island. This island used to be populated by a group of people called Giraavaru people. Due to soil erosions and flooding these people were moved to capital city Male over a hundred years ago. What is interesting about this people? Giraavaru people speak DIVAHI mixed with Tamil words. Giravaarus claimed to be ancient Tamil migrants to Maldives. Today these people live in male city but mostly have intermarried and mingled with the other maldivians. They have lost their unique identity since the time they moved out of Giraavaru island.
Divahi is actually a sister language to Sinhala - not a direct derivative of Sanskrit - although it has a significant Sanskrit influence.
Divahi is also spoken in Indian lakshwadeep Mulakku island. It is called Mahl. In Malakku. Divahi has three dialects. One is Mahl, second is Addubas. Mainstream standard divahi is the other. And Tamil mixed Giravaarubas used to be a dialect, but it is now almost extinct.
