Shortcut to doing this: 1) Type the text you want 2) Click on the eye next to the text layer to make it invisible (Eye closed) 3) Select only the frames you want to have that text 4) Click on the eye next to the text layer again to make it visible (Eye open)
This just doesn't work. I've tried over and over, it ends up doing weird things like staying on the whole time, but only blinking out for one or two random frames. 5th time was not the charm. I'd rather have the patience to twiddle with the opacity. EDIT: As usual, it was my fault after misreading. In case there's anyone else out there confused, Jaime meant to select the frames in the Timeline window, and click on the invisible eye on the frame window. Problem solved.
@MeJoho Oh gotcha. I tried it out after watching this great video. It worked for me on my version of photoshop (I am not a pro, at all) so maybe we have diff. versions? Not sure, but maybe it will work for other people, too.
This is not the correct (or easy) way to have text on different frames of a gif file. Once you added the desired text on layer 1, select all of the frames you do not want the text to appear in, using shift, and head to the Layers and click the eye to the left, next to the name of the Layer. The text will not be visible in all of the selected frames. This, knowing that most gif files have many frames.
+Jennifer logan swanson If you have to guess how to normally add text in photoshop (i.e. the text tool...), perhaps you should be looking at beginner tutorials.
Holly Wendy Carlson If you invent something you can name it whatever the fuck you want and you can pronounce it however the fuck you want. The creator said its pronounced jif. Get over it.

This comment has saved my noob ass eight miserable weeks worth of pointing and clicking. You rock.

I have searching for a tutorial for this for ages! Thank you!
Its easier to highlight the frames you dont want the text on and then click the eye next to the text layer.
Oh my god you are an angel I LOOKED EVERYWHERE FOR THIS
Where have you been all my life?
I love your accent! Thanks for the tutorial.
You are soo awesome :DD thank you!!!!

Thank you! Great in CC15! Just had to uncheck Propagate Frame 1
Thanks!
perfect thanks.
thanks :) really helpful
you have to carryy it(The text layer i mean) to the top that way it would show it in every frame

OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS!
@MeJoho You can press 01 to get the opacity to zero!
ctrl - click all the layers you want to change, then just change the opacity and it should change all of them.
How do I change the opacity of multiple layers at once. This gets really tedious working with long gifs.
but how do you add a 2nd text without the text in layer 1 from reappearing?
what about the text effects? they stick to the first frame only
Wish you started how to get the timeline.
This method also works in CS6
doesnt work when you add effect to text in cs5
what program is this?
cs5 i think
my whole frame goes away when i do 0 opacity
By the way, it's pronounced "JIF"!
how we "normally do"? in a tutorial? really? I am here to learn not guess!

Bruh.. it's pronounced JIF, according to the guy who created them. Come on, man.
In fact, it is NOT pronounced jif, it really is pronounced as gif
Nicole Dubreuil
What a generous notion of you. Be gentle to him though its not like he committed genocide.
Nicole Dubreuil Well, the creator of the GIF said it's pronounced JIF
+Battle Mage Brugh, no it isn't. G stands for graphics, which is a hard G. He is wrong. Do u even english.
