    Experimeting with building a hollow chisel mortiser out of wood.
    In the end, I realized that building it right would cost about as much as buying a cheap one, so it doens't really make sense to build one.

      @@Snaffer01 Man, I wish I was Matthias' neighbour growing up as a kid. He'd be like that awesome friendly engineer/mad scientist trope in tv shows/movies. Could you imagine being a kid and just hanging out in his garage after school and helping out with his projects and experiments; he gets a pair of willing and eager hands to do things like hold things and bringing him wood and you get to be part of his inventive process. Nowadays, you can't really have that because any time a kid hangs out with an older adult, people will look at you funny like some sort of sexual indecency is going on.

    I ordered a drill press morticer from Northern Tool for $50 sent to my carport. After the purchase all I read was how crappy and what junk they are. So after setting 6 or more months in the box I put it on and tested. First thing i forgot to tighten the chisel holder to drill press spindle. After that I was amazed at how well it morticed 1\2" slots in well seasoned ash for table legs. The supplied fence and work hold down SUX rear tit on a sow hog. After looking at it in the box i knew the fence would need rebuild. But I'm really impressed with the moving parts of the kit and after every bashing forum about them. One thing is I run this drill press at its slowest speed from drilling thick metal before converting it into a mortiser. Personally I think running the drill slower is key. The other videos show them turning way too fast causing heat and friction issues.

    Nice job. Even though it appears to be not worthwhile to build a production-capable hollow-chisel mortiser, we appreciate you building a prototype for experimentation. It was very interesting.

    Considered the small amount of material left in the mortise, giving a quick touch up with a hand chisel does nt seems too much of a hassle, and if i need a through-hole mortise it would came up much better, even perfect

  • @matthiaswandel
    @matthiaswandel  12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I suppose. The problem is, a hand drill that has the chuck rigidly enough mounted to be suitable is quite expensive, and it's cheaper to buy a cheap drill press.

    • @markkoons7488
      @markkoons7488 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having tried hollow chisel mortising with a cheap drill, I have to say there's too much flex to them... probably to Matthias's rid, too.

  • @matthiaswandel
    @matthiaswandel  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A plug in dimmer would not provide regulated speed, just like the drill doesn't either. So the plug in dimmer wouldn't help at all.

  • @ThePaulCDickie
    @ThePaulCDickie 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Matthiaswandel I agree - it would not be regulated, nor would it have any sort of speed sensor; it would just slow down the motor in much the same way that a Variac auto-transformer would.
    At one time - probably some 40-50 years ago - one could buy an epicyclic gearbox for electric hand drills to slow down the speed for (rotary only) drilling into masonry. I have not seen such devices for years, though.

    Yes, it would NOT cut as deep as yours.

    They don't do a bad job at all . With a cast iron Chisel Mortiser Machine as you finish the plunge you turn the wheel and that shifts the work so the drill bit cleans the bottom . Before your finished you also re plunge the chisel and the left and right end and sweep inwards . The chisel breaks the left over bits off . It wont be as clean as a slot mortise bottom but its a lot cleaner than these shown where its just been plunged.

  • @Patriot1776
    @Patriot1776 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    About the only good thing Matt says on his website about inexpensive hollow chisel mortisers is that if you're a beginning woodworker and still learning the craft, hollow chisel mortising is the fast track to cutting mortises until you either have the skill to build a better mortising machine yourself, or have the money to buy one.

  • @whitacrebespoke
    @whitacrebespoke 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Slot morticer ok for furniture but hollow chisel and chain morticers come into there own on big deep mortices like for doors and gates. A lot of my mortices are through ones but it takes no time or effort to clean a stop mortice or a haunch with a sharp chisel. Slot morticers are good but can also limit what you can do as can't be haunched and will always need a round ended tenon or ends chopping out square with chisel by hand. Biggest fact of life is there's no 100% easy answer to mortice and tenon cutting but there's no stronger joint.

  • @Patriot1776
    @Patriot1776 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @earlye The main reason why he decided to experiment with hollow-chisel mortising was just to try it for himself and see if his own biases against it were well-founded or not, and also I'm guessing discover why his dad never used a hollow chisel mortising kit after first trying it when he bought it years ago. Matt says on his website the brackets and hollow chisels for this came from that kit, his dad letting him have it just to get rid of it I'm sure.

    Like the long handle for leverage. I am over 50 now and don't have the strength i had 20 years ago. i want to make one of these but didn't want to mess up a good drill press. would there be an advantage to using a cheaper hammer drill with a cut out that allows one to adjust the drill?

  • @eln74

    I wonder if this type of mortising could be OK to use with soft woods, and that extra debris at the bottom could be to a good use packing and tightening things up for a better grip, like tiny shims, but it's only me, I guess that wont do with harder materials. Can it work Mr. Wandel? I don't want to look that slopy either hehe!! Thanks for sharing.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's okay with any wood. Unless you're not gluing the joint, the majority of it's strength and holding power comes from the cross grain contact of the tenon in the mortise. Nor will it look sloppy because you won't see it once the joint is put together.
      Now is it optimal? No. I'm just saying that it will work, and likely won't be the biggest issue weakening what you build.

    Could you use this same concept with a rack and pinion set of gears to build a cheap drill press? This would be cost effective for me because i already own a good quality hand drill.

  • @earlye
    @earlye 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was quite confused as to why you would bother doing this, given the high-quality rounded mortises you've been making with the panto-router. It would be nice to see you cut open one of those for comparison.

    Although you already have a slot mortiser and a router table, have you ever considered making an overarm router? Seems like it may prove to be quicker in certain scenarios. I've never used one, so I don't know the pros and cons, but they sure seem convenient.

  • @wildwill1970
    @wildwill1970 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    The whole time I was watching this I was thinking, why? Why bother with this, your pantarouter and slot mortiser are a way better solution! Then right in the last ten seconds you said just that. It's nice to see what it does there at the bottom of the mortise, I hadn't thought of that before.

    For better (and inexpensive) speed control, just use a plug-in dimmer.
    You may have to limit its use, though, to short bursts of activity to prevent the motor getting too hot, as the cooling fan will also be slowed down and it might not push enough air past the motor armature.

    The router produces quality cuts but doesn't have the square edge. Why don't you ponder the idea of making a square edger tool for the routed slot. First, find a corner chisel or cut the mortise bit in half. Then attach that to that machine or a press you've just made.
    Or built a portable drop in version then hammer away... accurately. Accommodate it so it won't get stuck. (You seem to like to make new stuffs. If it's already been done, then ...you can cancel the project.)
