The gearbox you put into that car is a Getrag 250G from what I could tell. I had the same one in my Z3. That gearbox is known for having 2nd gear synchro issues, or if they are shifted too hard the entire 2nd gear mechanism can explode. Alternatively the 2nd gear shift fork can snap which will also cause you a bad time. If I were you i’d flush the fluid with pentosin or ATF depending on what your particular gearbox requests. If that doesn’t fix the 2nd gear grinds… well they aren’t that hard to pull. Good Luck and welcome to the club resistance is futile
Ding Ding! They can try a different fluid but sounds like no fluid is going to completely fix it at this point. fwiw am around 400K Getrag 250 behind an S52. Synchromesh Oil changes every other car motor oil change with some LM additive. Still silky smooth
Honestly she should put a ZF in there, the ZFs are much stronger and more reliable.
@@Rekt-M8-v4 the ZF S5-31 is a pretty good option they are just held at a premium for good reason.
@@RLTyou were very specific with the zf numbers. Are there different zf gear boxes used in the e36 like 328 or the m3?
@@dohc1974 the ZF S5-31 I referred to is the gearbox in the e36 and 46 for the larger displacement engines like the 2.8 and 3.0. The lower displacement cars got the Getrag 250g or I think a getrag 240g. The M3 had a 6 speed that I unfortunately do not recall the model number of but it was built by ZF. BMW seems to use ZF in their higher torque cars to prevent issues like what Colette was having.
15:28 put back original shifter ;) i have the identical problem. 3 geabrox , many rods ,different shifter positions finally put back OEM shifter and 2 year works perfect
This is because of the chassis mounted shifter and not having solid metal or delrin engine mounts, or at the minimum very hard poly. When the engine and trans moves and the shifter is body mounted(fixed) all that can move is the linkage. Pulls the trans out of gear.
Had a German transmission from Gtrag. Had to up the gear lube to GL-5 85W, to reduce 2-gear grind. If it is popping out of second gear, gear oil may not solve that trouble. Since you are in FL, could try the 140W, but that could prevent all shifts unless the trans is extra warm. Probably trans. synchro and gear replacement necessary.

If you find out your transmission is the cause of the problems, I would highly recommend getting a ZF as those getrags are kinda known to have problems. The ZFs are known to be much stronger. You will have to get a ZF driveshaft and shifter linkage to go along with the ZF transmission. The ZFs came on the e36 328i and M3

These cars usually never get hot...unless the cooling system explodes.
If you are gonna drift it, just pull out the abs completely. May help. All this is 100% normal for e36s. It’s like one thing after another lol - can’t help on the trans, may want to see if you could throw a zf in there but sounds like synchros are done. But seriously I’d still take that car over all the other guys’ cars. It’s in the best shape of any of them. I think if you had more time to sort it you’d love it. Hope it all works out! 😎
In one of Chelsea’s old videos, he said not to use poly bushings for RTABs and to use syncro design works monoball RTABs.

You had me howling- “this is shit” I think the only reason most people build them is they are (were?) dirt cheap to start with
Correct. They were a "compact executive car" that would clock up hundreds of thousands of miles and then be flogged off cheap. The only thing they had going for them was the rear drive and multilink suspension, so with minimal work they could be made to drift. That work usually involved stripping the weight out of them, welding braces in a couple choice places, and replacing bushings with solid mounts (the one at 9mins ish for example). It was one of the cheapest possible drift cars you could get at the time, in fact a mate of mine got FIVE of them for a thousand pounds along with some bits of a 6th one that was smashed beyond repair. He ended up making 3 good drift cars out of them that competed for a while before being sold for parts and scrap. The one good shell left over had a Volvo turbo 5cyl put into it along with all aftermarket running gear and is still competitive today almost 15 years later - mostly because there isn't any BMW left in it.

Adjust the linkage, also the gear crunching seems like a clutch bleeding issue. Take the slave cylinder out of the box and bleed it by hand first

With a chassis mounted shifter you should be using solid motor/trans mounts and a dssr

I think most people who are into cars have a ride that didn't want to cooperate at all with the build. And honestly as much as it is not fun on your side of the camera, it is kind of a nice reminder that builds do not always go as planned to people watching the videos. I'm sure you and the crew will get it sorted eventually.

Sucks she's having problems but it'll all be figured out soon enough and she'll be out there drifting properly. Hearing the bmw 6cyl makes me miss my e34 that i completely gutted and started to make it into a drift/hooning car. I beat the crap out of that car and it never gave me a problem it was so much fun.
You might be having bad luck with this car but it’s at least making entertaining content 😂 hopefully you can get it all sorted before all the real shenanigans kick off!

That stock linkage does have a lot of play and bend. Supposed to get the beefier two prong DSSR from garagistic. If that’s a Getrag boy are its days numbered 😂.
I forget where you the one who put the shifter on top of the hydro plate instead of the hydro plate over the shifter. That could be your problem if so

If you want to love your E36, strip everything out of it with a BMW badge on it. The only thing the E36 ever had going for it was the price, you could get a RWD multilink suspension base for a couple hundred from a scrap yard and be drifting it the same day with some angle iron and a stick welder. It was never good, it was just cheap and easily available.

I love the E36, and im so sad you got a bad one for 2k. I got an bad one for $800 15 years ago. So they did go up in value. I got an e36 (Z3) last year for $3300 last year. m52 5 speed manual. i got lucky, id trade you, but i'm 90% done with the turbo install.

All jokes aside BMW’s are actually great drift cars and daily’s. Unfortunately you seem to have found the holy grail of bad ones. Lol oil leaks? Definitely. Coolant leaks? possibly. But whoever had that previously to you just didn’t know anything about life at all. Don’t let it ruin it. Once all worked out, you’ll love it.

Lol being an e90 owner e36 problems don't sound like real problems.
I have an E36 aswell to daily and the thing has been super reliable...but it might be that whenever something goes wrong it's no big deal to just keep driving.
The struggle is real and real is what ya watch for.
