    I trained under Sensei Fred Serricchio in Darien, CT in the mid 80's. Sensei Fred Serricchio trained under Sensei Mori! Sensei Fred Serricchio would take us a few times a year to Sensei Mori on Saturday and we would watch our black belts and other black belts take class! Watching this video of Sensei Mori was exactly how we learned! Shotokan Japanese Karate Association! Thank you, Sensei Mori! Prayers💕

    I trained with him as a teenager at Stonybrook University in the early 90s. My sensei was Chuck Muller. Senei Mori was and is a master of the craft. I feel so honoured to have spent time with him. I remember we went to a tournament and he was out back walking around, it was just me and him and we talked for a while. ill never forget it. Made a huge impact on my life. oooosss!

    Fantastic attention to detail. The explanation of bowing and projection of the voice during three step sparring is the stuff that is often forgotten. The mortar between the bricks, so to speak. I did not train with Masataka Sensei but under Hidetaka Nishiyama also of the JKA. The old time original students of Funakoshi Sensei could really demystify the magic yet to watch them was still magical.

    Many fond memories at the dojo at 73rd and B'way, every class began with cleaning the floor and clearing your mind to learn technique. Loved and hated when he made us hold positions/stances while he got his Japanese/American Dictionary out to look up a word to emphasize what he wanted to tell us about the technique he was teaching us that day. He was an amazing Sensei, we have lost a true treasure. Thank you for the video.

    Mori Sensei and Enoeda Sensei came through the ranks together when they originally trained at the JKA in Japan.
    Mori was always the senior with Enoeda regarding him as a bigger brother figure.
    There were story's of them when they were young going down to the local dockyard together to pick fights with the sailors to developed their fighting skills. (How true that is do not know but it was a commonly held belief).
    When Enoeda invited Mori to England to teach at his Summer camp trading course at Crystal Palace in London Enoeda came to my club to personally ask that I attend his course. He was asking as many people in England as possible to attend because he wanted to put on a good show of support as a mark of respect to Mori.
    Enoeda joking said to me "I want some really good Karateka to attend this year so if you come to my course I will give you 3rd Dan" I replied. "Thank you Sensei but you have already given me 3rd Dan at last year's course"
    Enoeda then laughed like a drain for ten minutes. LOL.

    It's really amazing to see sensei kept his passion for 65 years, what makes me really sad is, it seems no matter who you are and how much you've practiced, you won't be able to keep it up and get better as you get older !!
    When i was a kid, watched a lot of chines martial art movie, and i believed as i get older i get stronger and stronger, if i practice, which is not necessary true in real world ! that made me really discouraged, to a point i didn't want to practice martial art anymore...

    The Taekwon Do (Jidokwon style no longer practiced in S. Korea, I suspect) that I took in South Korea so long ago (1969) is not today's Taekwon Do. It was like Japanese Shotokan Karate. And it was certainly not S. Korean Hapkido that uses lots of joint-locks often with associated throws as well as their own types of kicks, punches, and strikes. I have largely modified my martial art into something else discontinuing Kata (stylized or choreographed fight "dancing") and added some Hapkido joint-locks & throws, modified my fighting style a lot (vertical-fist punching instead or horizontal-fist for a long-distance punch to keep my elbow close to my body for more power ... no knife-hand finger jabs that can injure my fingers ... using ducking & dodging a lot instead of standing straight up to punch and block but mostly hard-blocking as a type of attack to opponents arm to cause him pain and momentary disorientation or sweeping-block to measure my distance for a counter-attack ... raising my knee very high to do a forward or side kick making my foot sort of come downward in a stomping even sideways or upwards as in high or medium kicks ... and ferocious sudden attacks or counter attacks and etc etc etc. And I often don't even use a fighting stance but just to stand relaxed before defending or attacking with ferocity. That's me doing the flying kick.

    Much respect for those who dedicate their lives to self-improvement, and the elevation of society as a whole l- and muchbrespectnto the philosophy and culture of Shotokan. As an outsider, it seems to be a very rigid style, and not necessarily in a good way. Bricks and boards don't fight back, and opponents don't conveniently stand still so you can execute a rigid karate dance with them. I suggest bouncing a bit on the balls of the feet, and being more fluid. However, the kicks and punches are crisp and snappy!

    In my karate class a couple of students and I go to bars to pick fights with people there. It's great because we know karate and they don't so it is relatively easy for us to win. The problem is that sometimes some of us get injured. We figured that if we had our master come with us that we could at least diminish this risk. How do people here think we should propose this to him?

    • @chamboyette853
      @chamboyette853 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oliver Hoppner - The problem I have with your logic, is that if we study karate it's easier to beat people up even if they are bigger than you are. And that makes us be proud of ourselves. Why are you saying it's stupid?

    • @chamboyette853
      @chamboyette853 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oliver Hoppner - Well somehow the sensei found out and he was really pissed, especially since we were picking fights with people bigger than us. In order to stay in the school, each one of us had to do a fight against 14 to 15 year old girls, but we were on our knees and the girls were allowed to wear boots and spurs and use a riding crop. Two of us got beat pretty badly because we couldn't move much on our knees (even though the rest won). We are all adults but it was embarrassing to be beaten by girls that young, especially since they had weapons.
      Do you think he handled it the right way?

    Hi; I am not from USA but I am a JKA student too; however, I see the main problem that we have now; even more now after all the older Sensei are passing: anemic students...no kime; no spirit; not so good technique; no understanding of what is going on with the techniques; basic techniques...; no Makiwara training; no maai; no good use of the hips; no coordination between dachi, hips, relaxation, breath to obtain a good kime and to have better technique. No understanding of the explosive force.
    Well; ALL that mentioned directly and between lines by Sensei...what the video showed about the students is LACK of ALL that.
    Is not good, I know, to mention that by me, other fellow student but is something that I have been seeing in these past decades. What happens with those older guys there? supposed to be at least Sandan with a couple may be nana dan? but what is the example that they are leaving for the kohai? May be the video editing only showed the not so good students...
    Please, open your senses; you guys had the opportunity to learn from a good instructor. One from other era; one of the last ones.
    ALSO: the translation of Dojo kun in English is totally diluted! losing the meaning in great percentage. Think about that point.
