This film is unrelated to the Monsterverse, it is a remake of the original 1933 film "King Kong" which follows the same plot and conclusion. The original would go on to serve as an inspiration for Godzilla and later awaken Peter Jackson's interest in special effects and the film industry. In fact, this was his favorite film growing up and he originally tried to produce a remake of the original film in 1996. However, six months into production the film was scrapped due to competition from other monster movies released at the time. This in turn opened the way for Peter Jackson to direct "Lord of the Rings". And the rest is film history.
To the question, "is this cannon": this was a very close adaptation of the original 1933 version. The original King Kong story was always this, the Skull Island movie was a complet rewriting, just so they can fit Kong into the Godzilla cinemaverse better.

What makes the movie all the more tragic is that it’s implied that Kong is the last of his kind. In his cave, there are several skeletons of Kongs species. With apes being social creatures, you can only imagine how alone he felt before he found Ann.
Ad sad as Kong's death is, it is a merciful death. Animals did not do well in captivity at this time and Skull Island was sinking and sank beneath the ocean 15 years or so after Kong was taken.

I grew up on the original 1933 Kong. I saw the 1976 version in the theater cause, giant creature of course, but I enjoyed that movie as well. The DNA of the storyline of this version is a combination of the original and the '76 version. There wasn't much of a sympathetic view of Kong in the original, pretty much just the attitude of the time.
I prefer that 1976 remake as well - Jessica Lange's film debut in a larger-than-life Dino De Laurentiis production, no CGI, real Research Vessel, beautiful island, etc. (they say Dino was on set nearly every day).
Fay Ray was a screaming fool in the original. It was a male oriented “the man will save the day” approach. I’m glad Jackson made the female lead have substance.
@DanSolo871 But don't forget that was way back in the 30s, almost a hundred years ago. That and many more movies released years, decades after, would have the same approach. Especially, around that time.

In a few years, the original 1933 "King Kong" will fall into public domain. I am actually terrified at what is going to happen. Undoubtedly, some will make a cheap & grotesque horror movie out of it.
This is all Cannon and done with a true love for this classic story. It is a very Powerful story and the deaths would have felt less if they didn’t have screen time. Also, this was Andy’s first Ape Mocap and just after Gollum. This is why they cast him to be Cesar. Loved your reactions Mary.
Oh Man i loved King Kong. The ending destroyed me my first time too. 😢 Oh and in 30:37 why Kong was mad at Ann after he fought 3 V-Rexes is because she hits him and yells at him after she entertained him.
A book called "The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island" was made that depicts the events after the film, in which several expeditions onto the island were made to document its geography, culture, as well as the amazing flora and fauna that once lived on it before it was tragically destroyed 15 years after its discovery by a catastrophic earthquake which sank the island and wiped out everything living in it.
I remember watching both the original and then watched this masterpiece as a kid, it forever remains one of my favorite films and one of the best films ever.
Now this is the best remake ever! I saw this when I was eight and loved it. Peter Jackson did it again! The insect pit terrifies me to this day. Also, this movie takes place during the Depression, around the time when the original King Kong was released. Also also, yeah I’ve done the mirror thing. It actually helps because you can see how you come off to people as the words leave your mouth, and so you can make adjustments.
my dad took me to see this in theaters because he loved the OG King Kong and this changed my life. Like i truly feel bad for anyone who didn’t watch this in theaters
Adrien Brody is a terrific actor. He remains the youngest ever person to win the Best Actor Oscar (he won just a couple of weeks shy of 30), winning for THE PIANIST (2002). I heard he is great in the upcoming movie THE BRUTALIST as well.
I remember this film came out when I was in elementary school and it was that film that everyone else in my class got to watch, but my folks told me I was too young for at the time. Apparently in a tie-in art book "The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island," Denham escapes any lawsuits by putting the blame on the company that made the chrome steel chains. He then leads seven zoological expeditions to Skull Island between 1935 and 1948, when the island sinks into the sea due to volcanic and geological activity.
Really love your reactions! I’m glad you were able to enjoy it even though it broke your heat. Yes, as a lot of other people have said, this is a modern retelling of the original 1930’s movie with Fay Dunaway. Kong on the top of the Empire State Building is one of the most iconic moments in cinema history. If you ever go to Universal Studios in Hollywood, they have that a huge “life size” painting of that scene at Universal Citywalk.
Talking about the film being 3hrs 20 mins, reminded me way back in the early '90s, when just ahead of the release of Alien 3, my local cinema did a double feature of Alien and Aliens, back to back. We were in the cinema for about 4.5 hrs. A week or so later, they then did a triple feature, of all 3 films back to back!
'This' is the story of King Kong. He dies at the end. Not a happy story, not supposed to be. The King Kong in later versions (though 'some' very good) are merely attempts to capitalize on the name and character. He has been remade as a type of action figure.
Fun Fact: Peter Jackson almost made King Kong in 1996, and it was gonna be more of an action adventure movie in the vein of the 1999 Mummy movie, with Kate Winslet as Ann Darrow, George Clooney as Jack Driscoll, and Robert De Niro as Carl Denham. While I’m happy with the movie we got and think it’s probably better, it would be cool to look into another dimension and see what could’ve been
Ironically "that scene with all the creepy crawlies" was cut out of the 1933 version (well more from the shoot - they never finished the effects for it), but Jackson wanted to recreate it from the few little bits of still images and such they had from the stop motion for the parts that were originally done.
No this follows the script of the original 1933 King Kong movie very closely. It's a really good modern remake. It has nothing to do with the other movies you've seen: if anything they're an attempt to shoehorn Kong into the Godzilla timeline. The valley of the bugs is probably the thing that freaked me out most in a movie since I was a kid, and I'm 56.
Another King Kong remake to watch is the 1976 version that stars Jeff "The Dude" Bridges. Notable performances in this include Adrian Brody, Naomi Watts, Colin Hanks, Jamie Bell, Thomas Kretchman and Kyle Chandler. Kong is portrayed by Andy Serkis via motion capture. This released the same year as Batman Begins, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and War of the Worlds. Just like with Batman and Star Wars, this has a videogame adaptation
The guy who played the chef is Andy Serkis - he played Alfred in "The Batman", Jenna's boss in "13 Going on 30", and most famously Smeagol/Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings".

C´mon, the bug pit scene can´t be that much different to New Zealand 😜
This version is actually one of my favorite monster universe movies. Honestly, Kong is such a sweet guy. He doesn’t deserve what happens to him
I remember watching both the original and then watched this masterpiece as a kid, it forever remains one of my favorite films and one of the best films ever.
This is the updated remake of the original 1930s version of King Kong with Fay Wray as the Beauty
19:22 "Why do they have to do that?!" 😂
I gotta say tho, these Skull Island Natives are much more scarier than the ones in Kong: Skull Island
I used to find the scene where they find the natives on Skull Island terrifying when I was younger.
IMHO this is the best retelling of the original movie.
my dad took me to see this in theaters because he loved the OG King Kong and this changed my life. Like i truly feel bad for anyone who didn’t watch this in theaters
The video game for this movie was peak tbh
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that cried watching this, I love this movie
Adrien Brody is a terrific actor. He remains the youngest ever person to win the Best Actor Oscar (he won just a couple of weeks shy of 30), winning for THE PIANIST (2002). I heard he is great in the upcoming movie THE BRUTALIST as well.
Talented, but with a well-earned reputation for being weird, temperamental, and very hard to work with.
"The Pianist" was such a good movie. It's disappointing that nobody reacts to it.
19:10 because when she screamed kong responded to her
*I saw the movie twice in theaters when it came out 😂😂 I was 11. ill be 30 in December😭*
I remember seeing this in theaters when it was released. Peter Jackson did a phenomenal job remaking this classic
Love this movie far more than the Monsterverse one.
As one should!
Yes Mary, this is (unfortunately ) the original story for King Kong. Even tho it’s the second retelling of the story.
Third actually
@@GeorgeKittiras the original in 33(?) - 1976 - When else? (Genuinely curious)
@@bouhhgz1969 sorry, I got confused with Disney’s mighty Joe 😅
For me, this is the best version of King Kong! Always glad to see someone else appreciate it as well!
I went and saw this with my friends, back in 2005. Then I brought my family. It was truly a cinematic event!
Carl Denham epitomises single-minded determination and that is simultaneously his greatest strength and weakness
I still have a soft spot for Kong ‘76, which I saw when I was a little kid when it first came out
"Why is this the cutest movie ever?" because it truly is a love story
Wildly underrated movie. Jack Black is terrific in this. Subtlety is a tool weak actors use to undermine strong ones
8:19 he stars in the film The Pianist, and plays a supporting role in The Village.
When I saw him in Summer of Sam I knew he’d be a major actor
I remember seeing King Kong (1976) in a theater. I was 7 years old. It traumatized me forever 😞 I cried for days 😭
At the end of the movie: “It wasn't the airplanes. It was Beauty killed the Beast.”
Meaning: Kong truly did love Ann and he tried to protect her
No this follows the script of the original 1933 King Kong movie very closely. It's a really good modern remake. It has nothing to do with the other movies you've seen: if anything they're an attempt to shoehorn Kong into the Godzilla timeline. The valley of the bugs is probably the thing that freaked me out most in a movie since I was a kid, and I'm 56.
"It was beauty that killed the beast." The last line in the original 1933 movie too.
I always thought Kong would have been so much better off if he never met humans.
There is 3 versions of King Kong
