There was a guy who made it to the top on the 2nd or 3rd lap and spun his rear derailleur 180° so it was pointing straight up. Absolutely destroyed it and his chain.
Me too, Midwest classic, brings back memories. Wow you got jackpot weather! Great cinematography. This is a keeper! ((Once we got to race in pouring rain, ha, that was a day. ))
Another awesome video Drew. I'll probably watch it once or twice or another dozen times. Ive learned so much from last year's video, as well as this one. Y'all are animals. I barely made it up the 3 times I had to, let alone could ever do it 15.
I love your crit videos. I watch them when I’m on the trainer doing intervals. Definitely helps, though I find myself leaning sometimes into the turns! 😂
LOVED every minute of it, dude! Great effort in defending too! I thought Cade had a mechanical but it was a pregnant pause to go over the street crossing. But when he launched....GOOD LAWD O MIGHTY!!! Yeesh!!!
Pretty awesome your teammates were on it, covering all the moves! I'll bet it was relatively easy day for you since one of your teammates broke away. Great race and great job!
It's been over 30 years since I raced here- they changed the course a bit but the snake is still the same (the broken derailleur was awesome for nostalgia)
This is my hometown! I'm so glad to see they are still holding this incredible race. I did this race once and had to throw in the towel after 2 trips up Snake Alley. It is insanely difficult. The GoPro effect doesn't do the grade justice, it is so steep on the inside of those corners.
That looks like a wicked course, Gotz to get to IA and give that a whirl, I am a chunk though, so probably just get shelled by the second lap on the snake!
Snake alley was one of my favorite races. It's the only crit I raced where it made good strategic sense to attack full blast in the first minute (I raced back when the start was right before the hill). Snake Alley is special.
Cooler than my last time. In Oregon for 28 yrs now, last did Snake in ‘92. Start/F was a block down. 2 quick Rs from the start and we entered the Snake via L turn w a R exit at the top, immediately descending back to S/F road.
@@DrewDillmanChannel Oh, actually I’d prefer this one. I was one of 60 Cat 3s at the start n one of 50 who got bottlenecked first lap on the Snake, race over😂 Chris Daggs was my teammate, he’s the Director for Lux now. Great video, congrats on last yr n good luck…i miss the Midwest crit scene
Wow! Sick video dude, great riding! Hot DAM! Dude at the end that won it had a kick on him! Yeah, you right, once you opened your sprint you should have kept sprinting, if you had of followed in the guy who won, you would have got 2nd or third for sure. That's racing though.
It’s fun to watch guys in front of you mis-judge their line going into Snake Alley and swing way too wide after the first corner; you then immediately catch up by the next corner with no additional effort. That’s what high-level crit racing is all about..maximizing your efficiency over the race and delaying going into the red for as long as possible.
Memories from doing that race in late ‘80s: *100+ riders in Cat 4 and Cat 3 race *Putting on a new 13-21 freewheel to make sure I could get up hill, noticing at end 21 was never touched *Marking the guy who glued his tire on with fast-tack just before the race, and being in front of him when he inevitably rolled a tire and took out 25 riders *Rider from our club “fearlessly” bombing through the field on the downhills-he admitted after the race due to his new Shimano AX calipers he really had no brakes
Ripped his derailleur off on the first lap, damn that is brutal no matter the discipline. Hopefully that is an easy fix with just needing to replace the derailleur hanger and not damaging the frame in the process.
For this I did 5.3k, 30fps, 16:9 aspect, stabilization turned all the way up. This gets me about 85min of record time. I also use a 5min timer so I can press record and it’ll automatically turn off after 5min.
its funny how a hill with turns changes ppl's perspective so much. a flat course gets boring and yet thats the majority of crit racing. i would like to see more diversity in the courses, it will certainly draw more attention.
Looks like your leadout target killed your momentum right before he started sprinting. Interesting, I wonder if it was done on purpose or he was thinking more of the riders in front of him.
next time use voice over. I didn't make it 3 minutes before bailing. jumping out of the racing every 3 seconds is horribly disjointing. looked like it would have been a cool race to watch though.
Bruh people these days don’t know how to shift dude 😂go back and learn with mechanical groepset now they push a button and and expect it to go from smal to big ring doing 400 watts or more lmao
I watch bike races..live, old and recent on GCN and TH-cam, Facebook..I came across this video and watched it and really really enjoyed it..few flaws w race.. distance way way way too short.. promotion.. need to get prize money and start money for a full field...125-150 riders minimum.. great race.. great racing all around the itty bitty field needs to be fixed..
3:52 Rider takes a decent entry but misses the apex and runs out wide on the right hander, then same mistake on the following left hander. POOR handling skills.
Such an iconic race. Enhanced by brilliant insight and commentary. Thanks!
Thanks! I love it!
Yet another perfect mix of video, music, and analysis. Can't seem to get enough of your videos here the past 3, or 4, days. Thanks for sharing Drew.
Awesome! Glad you’re liking them.
One of the best yet! Loved the variety of tracks and they were timed great with the "plot". Good stuff.
Imagine driving all that way paying your fee to race and obliterating your derailleur on the first climb up the 🐍!
Yea. I bet it was devastating for sure.
Stuff happens.
There was a guy who made it to the top on the 2nd or 3rd lap and spun his rear derailleur 180° so it was pointing straight up. Absolutely destroyed it and his chain.
At least he didn’t travel too far. Brody is an Iowa native.
But then…can get revenge in the Cage!
I don’t race anymore (recently stopped after 30+ years) but videos like this bring me right back to the effort and excitement!
Awesome. Glad you like them.
Me too, Midwest classic, brings back memories. Wow you got jackpot weather! Great cinematography. This is a keeper! ((Once we got to race in pouring rain, ha, that was a day. ))
Same!
Watching the attacks on the final lap was intense. Some great bike handling skills and speed through the turns was insane.
Another awesome video Drew. I'll probably watch it once or twice or another dozen times. Ive learned so much from last year's video, as well as this one.
Y'all are animals. I barely made it up the 3 times I had to, let alone could ever do it 15.
I wish it was 30! Haha. Thanks for watching!
@Drew Dillman you come back sometime to ride up it 30 times in a row in a non-race setting and I'll do my best to keep up with you! Haha!
I love your crit videos. I watch them when I’m on the trainer doing intervals. Definitely helps, though I find myself leaning sometimes into the turns! 😂
I do the same exact thing. Almost fell over a few times. Ha.
LOVED every minute of it, dude! Great effort in defending too! I thought Cade had a mechanical but it was a pregnant pause to go over the street crossing. But when he launched....GOOD LAWD O MIGHTY!!! Yeesh!!!
Yea. He’s got a good sprint for sure.
Probably the most interesting crit I've watched in a while. Thanks for sharing.
What about the coolest? Haha.
Raced here in the 90s. This brought me back a long way. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome to hear that!
Pretty awesome your teammates were on it, covering all the moves! I'll bet it was relatively easy day for you since one of your teammates broke away. Great race and great job!
Yea. Pretty easy for most the day. But the race itself is pretty hard.
It's been over 30 years since I raced here- they changed the course a bit but the snake is still the same (the broken derailleur was awesome for nostalgia)
Outstanding video!
Bitmoji Drew is as much an icon as Backwards Hat Dylan 😆
Yes! I’ll keep him in the videos. Haha.
It’s awesome watching these videos after meeting you and Kyle in Townsend!
Yes! And Savanna was at the race as well. Told her how awesome you are and she seemed excited to be working with you.
I'd love for you to have Jeff from NorCal Cycling on to review a race together. Hearing you two discuss strategy would be so insightful
Appreciate the work editing this for a through recap. Stellar work all around! That course does indeed look awesomely dynamic.
Thanks!
15 times up that "snake" is incredible. Nice racing by you and your team. That kick from Cade at the end 😯!
Yep. He can move. Ha
Great video and great race out there. Keep at it!
This was awesome! Thanks for sharing and putting it together.
Thanks for watching!
Great race, that was 🔥
It was indeed!
This is my hometown! I'm so glad to see they are still holding this incredible race. I did this race once and had to throw in the towel after 2 trips up Snake Alley. It is insanely difficult. The GoPro effect doesn't do the grade justice, it is so steep on the inside of those corners.
That’s awesome. And yes, GoPro didn’t do it justice.
I raced that 4 times in the mid to late 80's as a junior. Good times.
Helmet cam was great perspective at the perfect moments, great edit!
Yea. Conor White had the helmet cam. That’s too much for me. Haha. He was cool enough to let me use some footage.
@@DrewDillmanChannel I love the edits with different perspectives. I know it's a ton of work so thanks for doing that!
Great job Drew !
That looks like a wicked course, Gotz to get to IA and give that a whirl, I am a chunk though, so probably just get shelled by the second lap on the snake!
Worth it!
Do it! It's an amazing ride. Rippin' through the corners to the Snake was wild, and that climb... really tests you.
Great video. Very helpful and a lot to learn from.
Awesome. Glad you liked it!

Yep. Definitely a special race.
Super exciting, nice work.

Awesome footage, mate! Better luck next time! Cheers! 😀
Thanks!
Drew - great race commentary. We'd love to see speed/power data overlay too if you can! Keep up the good work.
Yea. Had quite a few people ask about that. Haven’t really tried it yet. Not sure if it’s my thing.
Great music, too! I love this crit.
Well, just sitting in my office watching this and wondering if I even need to ride today, pushing HR zone 3 just sitting here. Great race and tactics.
Happens to me too. Awesome race.
YES
Yes!

Yea. The old course is way better than current course. There is construction down on the old start finish straight.
@@DrewDillmanChannel Oh, actually I’d prefer this one. I was one of 60 Cat 3s at the start n one of 50 who got bottlenecked first lap on the Snake, race over😂 Chris Daggs was my teammate, he’s the Director for Lux now. Great video, congrats on last yr n good luck…i miss the Midwest crit scene
love listening to the podcast! you should do a voice over for your next race.
Which podcast? I’ve thoughts about a voice over. Not sure if it’s my thing. Kinda like the ease and originality of the slides.
Good race.
Thanks!
Needs more overlays, esp data & HR :D Well done, keep 'em coming!
Wow! Sick video dude, great riding! Hot DAM! Dude at the end that won it had a kick on him! Yeah, you right, once you opened your sprint you should have kept sprinting, if you had of followed in the guy who won, you would have got 2nd or third for sure. That's racing though.
Yep. I’ve watched that clip 100 times. Haha. I know.
My legs hurt just watching u guys climb the snake over and over again.
That’s right. Haha.
What a great climb even with the sketchy surface.
nice criterium, looks like fun
now that was some insane snap.
For sure.
nice footage Drew , hello from N.L.
Thanks!
That was so entertaining
Awesome. Glad you liked it.

Yep. Totally agree. But totally love it. Haha.
"Laatste ronde" ! yeah you got me. Belgian here
Yes! Love it.
Good race, great positioning. Seems like your teammate may have gotten distracted by your inside pass, and not downshifted pre-Snake.
Another banger!
Thanks!
The derailleur just said "Nope, not today Satan I have had enough of your 800 watts!"
I miss the guy who used to play the devil on the Snake Alley.
I did that race about 35 years ago officials couldn’t keep track of everyone lapped riders think I went w toe straps 6 speed only used 3

this edit is sweeeet!
Glad you like it!
Hey Bro Fellow Christ follower and cyclist from the Caribbean here great stuff
Awesome. Thanks for the comment!
I haven’t raced this in probably 6 years. Course has changed
Yea. There’s construction on the Main Street so they’ve had to change the course.
@@DrewDillmanChannel was the course harder or just different?
Probably easier since we didn’t go up the snake as much and it cuts out the hill before the snake as well.
fun racin w you bro
Absolutely! Thanks!
Good Stuff DD
Thanks!
HI BRO! DO YOU USE WIDE ANGLE OR SUPERVIEW ,
My quads hurt just watching this
Mine still hurt. Haha.
Great Crit breakdown!
If only we could have power/speed data on screen 🙏
I’m working on it for future videos.
ok that was pretty dope
That’s right! Thanks!

Weird start, for sure. I don't recall any crit I've done which didn't involve sitting on the start line for at least 5 minutes before the whistle.
Agreed
its funny how a hill with turns changes ppl's perspective so much. a flat course gets boring and yet thats the majority of crit racing. i would like to see more diversity in the courses, it will certainly draw more attention.
It’s not just a hill with turns! It’s the snake!
What music used?
That guy who won lmao mid sprint his turbo kicked in he disappears and 2 sec later he zooms by
damn dude, i am zone 3 just watching this .
Happens to me when I watch it too. Ahah
@@DrewDillmanChannel FYI, that @pedalwithus comment was also from me, but realized i was logged in the wrong account to properly post.
I thought the US constitution forbayes "Cruel & Unusual Punishment"
Funny.
Where you get this beat from?
Artlist. Had enough people complain about the old music. Had to upgrade. Haha.
Incredible how these bicycles got some more expensive but fragile. I know weight is a factor but these things cost the same than a motorbike.
This oddly looks similar to the Richmond course on Zwift 🤔
Hmmm. I could see that.
I wish we had GoPros when I was racing.
We don't have anything like that
Im still not used to the new kit
downhill sprint that is tricky .
Looks like your leadout target killed your momentum right before he started sprinting. Interesting, I wonder if it was done on purpose or he was thinking more of the riders in front of him.
If I had to guess I’d say riders in front him. He knew he could win that sprint.
Cat 5?
Pro Men
Belle course bravo je comprends rien au commentaires mais je suis quand même 😅😅
I hated doing this race, but probably because I wasn’t very good!
Porto pottty on the course? No worries, theres money on the line.
Dizzle Dad watts goes hunting snakes💪💯❣️
That’s right!
Man, that downhill is chunky
It was fast.
Recalling the late great Steve Tilford...
With power data and heart rate data it would be greater to the viwers. but keep up
I’ll look into it.
If you want people to watch this you might want to consider not punishing them with that music. Thankfully mute was an option.
Wow uncalled for. the music was dope.
Thankfully there is a mute button. Glad you found it.
Don't do cuts every 5 secs to blackscreen! Put subs on the footage
Hard to watch and read at the same time.
Constant interruptions with stopping the race vid and inserting the text screens and is no bueno. Loved the snake portion of the route.
next time use voice over. I didn't make it 3 minutes before bailing. jumping out of the racing every 3 seconds is horribly disjointing. looked like it would have been a cool race to watch though.

First two into the snake are poor bike handlers...🤢
I would subscribe if you add ,speed, heart rate, power and course map. Ill check back later 👍
Bummer.
