Thanks for the video. I recently built a model building with a foam board core and I was not satisfied with result. Now I can see where I went wrong.

That said, what I'm most insecure of is the quality and accent of my voice and my brother has drilled me again and again about my enunciation; how I slur my words together when I talk which makes it hard to understand. Thanks for pointing out this feature, I think my goal for the future is to try to speak in such a way that the auto translate picks up every word maybe? =D
It's not necessarily your voice or annunciations that do it, as I've enjoyed reading many others where it happens the same way. Tell your brother I told him to stop teasing you - your voice is your voice and it's fine. My favourite translation mixup was in a documentary where occasionally the speach turned to a different language and the computer couldn't make heads or tails of it --- it took the sounds of this other language and used that to come up with English words. What a hoot it was reading along with it.

You have no idea how much this video has helped me!! I am a newbie to all things architecture, especially model making! I always found it near impossible to get a straight cut In my foam board, and result in making jagged cuts, or my knife slipping away from me :'(. ( I have battle scars and I'm proud!! >_

Thanks for the kind words =) If you're making windows, you can also offset the opening to the width of the foamboard, leaving only the external piece of paper cut to the correct size. Then, you can fold the edges back to so you don't see the middle bit of foam at all.

This was so helpful, thank you so much! Could you do more videos like this with different materials such as basswood perhaps? I'm having a hard time cutting straight and 45° joints. Also what tools are helpful or not.
Thank you Nely Sol! Unfortunately It's not easy for me to source basswood here which is a shame as It looks like a beautiful material to work with. From my research, apparently it's just a little harder to cut than balsa.
As I've stated in the video above, you just need to keep scoring the line you want to cut lightly bit by bit rather than trying to force your way through, and then sand the edges. Try using razor saws, mitre saws and coping saws as well depending on the material size. It's very time consuming I understand =(
If the wood is thicker then you probably need power tools like bandsaws or table saws. Don't be afraid of the machines, they are the big scary looking neighbour with a kind heart, they are your friend =)
The best power tool investment I reckon you can get is a disc sander or belt sander, maybe a combination machine. I use it ALL THE TIME, regardless if I made the cut by hand or by a power saw. Really that's the one trick to making your models look professional, it's sanding! You can make your 45 degree joints straight on the sander, they usually come with an angle or you can just get your own combination square to use with it.
I just want to state for the record that model makers do cut by hand, with the knife on a 45 degree tilt, but if you can do that perfectly with a clean join every time, please make videos helping me haha =D
My next two tutorials will cover how to cut acrylics and also just a run through of all the hand tools I use for model making =) But I will keep in mind to do a Timber one too in the future, thank you for your suggestion.

Thanks. You will use the same technique to cut anything that is able to be cut by a blade. Balsa Wood, Cardboard, Strawboard, etc =)

Any tips for making perfectly perpendicular cuts on foamcore？ Thanks.
No special tips apart from using a good square. You can mark out your line with your blade rather than a pencil too. If you watch my video about measuring and marking, I talk about making things look right rather than super accurate, so depending on your project, the problem might not be making sure every cut is perfectly perpendicular but that the pieces 'fit' to each other. Which means you have to cut them against each other rather than measuring each one out.
For example, if you were cutting a box, and you glue 5 sides together. For the last side, rather than depending on measurements, you can put it on a board and trace it out so that it matches perfectly. Alternatively, you can glue a extra big piece on your final side instead, and then trim the excess off.

Hey, that's just called a cutting mat, more specifically a "self-healing cutting mat". Which means any cutting marks will disappear by itself. It might come in different colours depending on your country.
is this sintra board? can i bend this using heat gun?
What material is it? Also, can can you suggest any more easy to cut plastic like sturdy materials for craft?
I'm mostly cutting foam core in this video, which is foam adhered between two thing sheets of paper. For a home crafter, this is the best material besides things like timber ice cream sticks or balsa wood. There is thin styrene sheet you can buy if you want plastic, but it might not be economical :(

Yes otherwise it would be very difficult to re position the ruler mid cut.
To draw that long line with a short ruler, I just measure the distance from the edge of the board to the cut line multiple times forming a series of points and then connect the points with my pencil =)

The cut never comes out straight when I'm using 50mm thick foam board :/
Hmm am I understanding you correctly in assuming you mean 50mm rigid expanded foam? I think you should use hot tools designed to cut insulation foam etc like hot knifes, or you can potentially a handheld hot wire cutter and a guide. Best option would be a Hot wire table though. Your local foam supplier might carry cheap ones that are chinese made in different sizes. Otherwise, Proxxon also makes one =)

Foam core. It's foam sandwiched by two pieces of paper.

Do you mean the name of the material I am cutting? It's foamcore. Which is basically a foam sheet with paper backing on both sides. There is no wood in this video.

Hi Ben, I'm not sure what you are referring to. You can cut anything with these techniques like timber based sheet material, paper based material, and the product I am cutting in the video, which is called foam core where I am based, a foam sheet sandwiched between paper.
The material I am cutting in the video is not EVA foam.
Too bad, I already cut the tip of my thumb when I saw this video.
