Hi Anthony, Good to see you back and welcome to the Big Apple! I've been playing for years but I'm largely self taught. A couple of years ago I finally discovered the wonders of using ghost notes in my playing and it's done wonders for my time keeping. But I've found that this also helps you add lots of intresting things with fills and you can fool around a little with note displacement and sound really funky. If you want to play less but still keep precise time you can play the ghost notes very silently. This has opened up a shitload of ideas for me personally. Please keep posting with great bass content!
Thanks for this. I think about this topic a lot during the improvisation section of my practice. Typically what i think is a cool riff is often too busy, so i usually spend time stripping it down to the "essential" groove elements if i can find them.
It's a constant balance of negotiating and executing in my opinion. That is why I stress practice and exhaustion. That will give you leverage with how you choose to perform according to the musical situation.
Have been watching you for a minute and I enjoy what you post. I found it interesting how you said you were playing something wrong by Jaco.. I do that myself, and turn the wrongness of something particular into something new, and try to develop more. Peace!
Now this was easily digestible for the layman in me . Stay with this formula is what I;d say . Keep you narrative accessible to the average Joe although you have tons of knowledge on Bass and music in general .
It’s definitely something I want to do more! I must admit, it’s not easy to discuss simple principles. So, I definitely look forward to growing more myself!
