As a regular gigger this has been in my rep for over 30 years. I had a beer or two with Eric in my music bar in Hong Kong when he came to several folk festivals. Like many do, I learned the words from the recording. For about 10 years I thought the reference to the 'gentle old black gin' was reference to an alcohoiic drink to ease pain, as with cowboys in flims when a bullet is dug out. Then DUH, I realised it was a reference to a female aborigine. As you will guess, I am not Australian.
I honestly keep coming back to this every day. My Mum and Dad always played Eric in the car when I was younger and he always brings up fond memories. I wish there was 10 more songs recorded like this, so relaxing! Thanks for uploading!
One of my favourite songs by Eric Bogle. 🙂
So glad I stumbled upon this piece of musical history.
